2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Review and Snow Test

To some off-roaders Toyotas Land Cruiser ranks right up there with Jeeps Wrangler as an icon, the ultimate all-star of mucking around in mud and slop.

Certainly, it will do all that with ease, yet like many Land Rovers before it, the Land Cruiser is an expensive luxury beast that only upscale off-roaders can approach. Case in point, the 2021 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition in Midnight Black.

READ:

This weeks test truck, and yes, its body-on-frame, not unibody like a crossover or car, was pricey.

It lists at $89,210 including delivery, and thankfully thats all-inclusive. The Heritage Edition is indeed the top of the line, but theres only one other model, the base if you will. It lists at $86,780 with just one option package that puts it at, well, basically the Heritage Edition price.

For the record, the Heritage version, which was also offered in 2020, boasts fancy bronze BBS wheels, a black grille and retro vintage badging, which I liked. Also, the stitching on the plush leather seats is a bronze shade. Cool!

Cool too because when car makers start calling models Heritage editions and such, it usually means their production days are drawing to a close. Certainly, Toyota already has a more modern Sequoia SUV that is actually longer and roomier, so the need for the Land Cruiser truck is waning.

If you plan to tow with your 4-wheeler, itll tug along 8,100 lbs. without complaint.

What Engine Does The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Has

The powertrain of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition is an old-reliable, healthy and powerful, 381-horsepower 5.7-liter DOHC V8 engine, producing 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Mated to this is an 8-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with a versatile full-time four-wheel-drive system. It also uses a TORSEN limited-slip locking center differential. Combined with this is a 2-speed transfer case with selectable low-range. Which humbly makes the Land Cruiser a great and a really capable off-roader.

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition gets a high-strength body-on-frame chassis sprung on a double-wishbone front and four-link coil-spring rear suspension which works effortlessly on rough surfaces. The suspension is helped with Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System which hydraulically adjusts the stabilizer bars to enhance on-road smoothness and off-road wheel articulation and movement.

As compared to the rivals, the new 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition lags behind the Americans in terms of power output. However, the Land Cruiser still gets some of the best performance features like Downhill Assist Control, Hill Start Assist, CRAWL Control, Off-Road Turn Assist, Multi-Terrain Select system, Wheel slip control, Skid plates , Multi-Terrain Monitor , and Standard Trailer Towing Package, which makes it a much more focussed performer off the road.

Review Update: 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Marks The End Of An Era

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most capable, and arguably one of the best traditional SUVs money can buy. But its flaws are glaring, and consumers’ tastes about what an SUV is and can do have changed.

For most, the Land Cruiser falls outside of that definition. For a few, it embodies that definition.

I spent a week with the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition and it only strengthened my feeling that the U.S. is losing one of the best vehicles on the market, though only for those who need it.

Miss: Not made for hauling kids to soccer practice

While the neighbors might think you just bought a $40,000 Toyota Highlander, you most certainly did not. Most Land Cruisers have three rows of seats , but the best seats in the house are the two heated and cooled thrones up front. Everyone else is going to pay a price for the vehicles off-road capability. The third row splits in half and each half folds up to the side, which eats into the cargo room. Adults wont be happy in the third row, and frankly neither will kids. The second row can seat three, but two will be far more comfortable on the heated seats. This is a massive three-row SUV with seating for up to eight people, but only four fit comfortably. The two-row version is much more useful for hauling cargo.

How Quick Is The New 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition In A 0

The heavyweight construction of the Land Cruiser does take its toll on the straight-line acceleration. The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition can sprint from a standstill to 60 MPH in 6.8 seconds. The Land Cruiser is more focused on the utility than its athletic abilities. The naturally aspirated V8 engine provides a large amount of low-end torque, which comes in handy when treading off the road.

As compared to the rivals, the Escalade & the Navigator lead the pack with a 0-60 MPH timing of 5.9 seconds. The Lexus LX570, although shares the same underpinnings with the Land Cruiser, Heritage Edition still leaves it behind in the dust in terms of straight-line speed.

The Land Cruiser Is Bulletproof Through And Through

Toyota Land Cruiser US

But all that size and strength are what make the Land Cruiser so bulletproof. According to Doug Demuro, Everything is overbuilt and designed to last at least 25 years, and I couldnt agree with him more. Theres a reason that Toyota can charge so much for these things for decades and get away with it. All the attention to detail and development that goes into making every Land Cruiser makes complete sense when you slip behind the wheel of one and let the miles pass by.

No, its not the most sensible daily driver, but the Land Cruiser will definitely get you to anywhere you want to go in the ultimate comfort and style, provided that you dont mind getting terrible gas mileage. After a week of driving, I averaged 14.7 mpg, which is on par with the EPA estimation. But I guess if gas mileage was high on my list of priorities, then I would buy a Toyota Highlander Hybrid instead, possibly even two, considering the cost for both would be the same price as one Land Cruiser.

Interior Comfort And Cargo

As far as the Land Cruiser’s cabin is concerned, it’s all about the execution, and there’s an impressive attention to detail at play. While the cabin isn’t as visually opulent as that of rivals such as the Mercedes GLS-class, it’s home to top-rate materials. Build quality is excellent, and knobs and switches move with a weightiness that conveys quality. The front row provides comfortable accommodations and commanding sightlines. There’s lots of room in the second row, but the third row is best suited for kids. With the standard eight-person seating setup, the Land Cruiser provides 16 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 41 cubic feet behind the second. There’s more cargo space in competing models like the Lincoln Navigator, which provides about 20 cubic feet of room for your belongings behind its third row.

Fuel Economy And Real

This Toyota’s mammoth dimensions take a toll on its fuel economy. According to the EPA, the Land Cruiser achieves gas mileage of just 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. You’ll do better with rivals such as the Lincoln Navigator and Mercedes-Benz GLS-class . The Land Cruiser we tested earned 17 mpg on our real-world 200-mile highway route.

Warranty And Maintenance Coverage

While Toyota’s warranty coverage is competitive among mainstream models, it’s underwhelming when compared with the warranties offered by many of the luxury SUVs against which the Land Cruiser is typically cross-shopped. Models such as the Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80 provide longer warranty coverage.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles

The extra $2,330 might not be worth it for everyone. Considering both trims for the Land Cruiser are so close in specs, even comparing these trims side by side on the official Toyota website, its not likely.

Really, since the Heritage Edition brings more appearance and aesthetics to the Land Cruiser, it may just boil down to your personal style preferences. If you love the way the unique grille and dark chrome exterior look on the Heritage Edition, youll have no trouble spending the extra two grand.

If youre spending the $85,665 for the base model Land Cruiser, you might as well go ahead and get the few extras that come with the Heritage Edition. It really wont be adding much to your already impressive SUV. Again, your personal preferences will determine if its ultimately worth the investment.

Engine Transmission And Performance

The Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7-liter V-8 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup generates 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Full-time four-wheel drive is standard. With a ride quality that’s smooth and well-planted, the Land Cruiser delivers comfortable driving dynamics. Its steering feel is light, however, and there’s a fair amount of body roll. Rival SUVs in this price range offer handling that’s more rewarding. In spite of its beefy exterior, the Land Cruiser is relatively quick off the line. It’s also capable of towing up to 8100 pounds, which is substantial but still slightly lower than some rivals, such as the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition.

What Is The Price For The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition
