“WOAH!” : Super Cruise Test Drive with 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate

Inside, the Sierra is designed with the driver in mind. The controls are all easy to reach and the quality of the materials generally increases with the trim levels. Starting on the SLE, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel becomes standard. Spending big on the upper trims unlocks even more desirable features, including a heads-up display and a power-adjustable steering column. The Denali Ultimate is where things get seriously upscale thanks to open-pore wood trim and a surplus of leather-covered surfaces. The front seats also feature 16-way power adjustments as well as massage functions. Interior cubby storage is more than adequate for storing all manner of small items and stuff. While GMC doesn’t offer any particularly innovative storage features, the Sierra 1500 can be had with a trick tailgate that has multiple configurations. There’s also a class-exclusive carbon-fiber-reinforced cargo bed that is lighter and supposedly stronger than steel.

Towing With Super Cruise

Another new feature for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate and its new version of Super Cruise is the ability to tow while driving hands-free. This one is going to take us a bit more time to adapt to. We tow thousands of miles each year and can completely see the benefit of Super Cruise while on straight, empty roads in the middle of nowhere. However, towing in heavy traffic is an entirely different beast. GMC provided us with a new Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate hitched to a large box trailer, and said to have fun on the same crowded I-5 freeway we had just driven unladen. Once on the freeway and settled into traffic, we activated Super Cruise. In its defense, the system worked as advertised. However, what the system doesn’t account for is semi-trucks and trailers that like to hug the line or even creep over. We found that Super Cruise did an OK job of staying centered in a lane . It doesn’t adjust for vehicles that creep a bit too close for comfort, though. While we were never in any particular danger, the distance between trailers often made for a more nerve-racking experience than if we had been in control of the steering.

Fuel Economy And Real

The 2022 Sierra 1500 has several different powertrain combinations, which means its fuel-economy ratings vary. Those most concerned with fuel efficiency should entertain the optional diesel engine, which is rated up to 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. However, most Sierras will be packing the 6.2-liter V-8 that comes standard with every Denali model. It’s estimated to earn 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway when paired with all-wheel drive. KBBs Andy Bornhop recently drove a new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate and a Sierra AT4X in the San Diego area. Andy reports:

In short, Im impressed. The new GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate is a big and heavy truck, but the refined 6.2-liter V8 boasts plenty of power, which reaches the wheels via a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps more significant: The new Denali Ultimate, with standard adaptive ride control and power side steps, positively drips with luxury in everything from the 16-way massaging front seats and 15-inch head-up display to the beautifully grained interior leather with open-pore wood trim thats laser-etched with a topographical map of Alaskas Mt. Denali, the tallest mountain in the U.S.

The symbolism isnt lost on us the Ultimate indeed is the peak Denali, and it shows in this pickups refined nature. In city streets or on the highway, road noise is basically nonexistent. And even though this pickup has an upright and massive nose, you dont hear any wind noise. As a result, the Denali Ultimate is a supremely comfortable long-distance hauler, aided by a great-sounding 12-speaker Bose audio system.

While we see Super Cruise as a handy driving aid on long interstate trips, were not totally comfortable with its use on crowded freeways in cities. On a positive note, you can use it if you want to, or forget that its there. Your choice.

What Is The 2022 Gmc Sierras Max Towing And Payload

Max towing numbers vary significantly depending on the exact configuration of a truck, with cab, bed size, engine, and more affecting the numbers.

With the appropriate setup the GMC Sierra can tow an impressive 13,100 pounds. The lowest max towing configuration is 8,500 pounds. Check with GMC for maximum towing on your preferred configuration.

Like with towing, maximum payload varies significantly. The lowest payload is 1,390 pounds on the AT4 standard box crew cab, while the regular cab 2WD standard box can handle 2,240 pounds.

A new GCW Alert feature uses engine torque to determine when the Sierra might be overloaded and can alert the driver to this potentially dangerous situation.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you went through and just checked all the boxes? Well, when it comes to GMC’s 2022 Sierra 1500 pickup, this is it. The new Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate is the best of the best. With a starting price of $82,795, this truck only has two important factory options to choose from: engineeither the 6.2-liter V-8 or 3.0-liter Duramax I-6 dieseland color. That’s it. Everything else comes standard.

How’s The Sierra 1500’s Interior

2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate 420-HP, Optional Super Cruise

One of the reasons this Sierra generation felt so old upon release was the underwhelming interior design. The dashboard’s focal point was a relatively small touchscreen surrounded by a sea of buttons on the center console. That changes for 2022 with a new 13.4-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen that comes standard on all but the base Pro model. The center stack then cascades, with the panel underneath the air-conditioning controls and off-road toggle switches angled slightly upward. Between the stack and center console is a new car-like shift lever that replaces a traditional column-mounted stalk.

This interior is a massive upgrade over the previous Sierra’s. The laser-etched topographical accents in the Denali Ultimate are especially a classy touch, while the improved controls and screens should elevate all Sierra trim levels regardless of price. The overall result is a cabin that seems more impressive than its predecessor.

But it’s not without stumbles. Next to the impressive touchscreen is a single volume knob that accentuates the large amount of surrounding piano black plastic along the screen apparatus and throughout the flimsy button layout below. Piano black looks nice when new, but it quickly becomes greasy and scratched after continued use, and the glossy shine can’t hide the fact that it’s just plastic on a truck that in the Denali Ultimate’s case costs $80,000. This is a minor issue, though, in what is otherwise a stately interior design for the Sierra.

How Comfortable Is The Sierra 1500

In its Denali Ultimate trim, as to be expected, the Sierra 1500 is a very comfortable truck. There is impressive sound deadening inside the cabin that prevents noise from the road, wind and engine from interrupting your cruise. The adaptive suspension also works well, helping the heavy pickup rebound from bumps and cracks in the road. Unlike some other adaptive systems, though, this one only reacts to the road it encounters it cannot scan ahead and prepare for imperfections in advance. So you do feel the road through your seat, more than in some versions of the Ram 1500, for example. Still, the Denali Ultimate and its more plush aspects stand out in the class.

As for the AT4X, it feels immediately more comfortable than its Silverado ZR2 cousin. This is largely due to the smaller, less aggressive all-terrain tires that emit less noise and muffle some bumps in the road. But the luxury trimmings in this off-road truck can’t be denied. Soft materials abound, and both heated and ventilated front seats are always welcome off the beaten path.

According to GMC, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 starts at $37,195. Thats for the regular cab, standard box, base Pro model with two-wheel drive, before destination fees. Car and Driver list the starting price as $35,645, which more than doubles in the trucks most expensive form. Furthermore, C/D recommends buying one of the mid-tier trims, Elevation, which starts at $50,045.

However, GMCs lineup of full-size trucks now features highly luxurious models like the AT4 and Denali. The AT4X and Denali Ultimate are even better, which are the pinnacle of an upscale vehicle. Unfortunately, with that type of quality comes a high price. The most expensive version of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, the Denali Ultimate, starts at $82,695.

Auto Lane Changing! 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Super Cruise review

The most significant addition to the 2022 Sierra 1500 is the adoption of GM’s Super Cruise a seriously impressive suite of driving aids that allows for hands-off driving in certain circumstances. This newest version also includes an automated lane change system that activates when it senses a slowing vehicle ahead of you and executes a pass when it’s safe. Note that automatic lane changes are not available while towing, but other Super Cruise functions are. When using navigation, Super Cruise-enabled routes will be highlighted on the map, so you’ll know exactly where the system can be engaged.

Unfortunately, Super Cruise will cost more than what you’ll pay for its package price. Standard on the Denali Ultimate and optional on the Denali, Super Cruise requires a subscription fee. Three years is included to get you started, but after that, you’ll have to pay to continue using the service. GMC has not yet announced pricing for Super Cruise once the trial period ends.

We just attended the preview for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with the refreshed interior and updated tech. And the tl dr version of our review is: We liked it. But we recently learned that one of the new additions for 2022 might not actually be available: Super Cruise.

Heres the thing, we are still experiencing supply chain issues from the early days of Covid-19 lockdowns, not to mention the fact that the precious microchips that power things like Super Cruise were allocated to other industries during the pandemic. Now, automakers are scrambling to get this chips just as suppliers are scrambling to pump them out. But from everything weve read from industry analysts, things wont get back to normal until mid-2023 at the earliest.
