4 Month Cruise Around The World

How Cheap Is A World Cruise

Around The World | 4 Month Trip Travel Diary

The idea of a world cruise seems like something achievable only to the wealthy and retired. Were neither. Not even close.

Yet we love to travel and the idea of taking a cruise around the world is appealing. We regularly come across social media shareslike this onethat just popped up on my Facebook feed last week. It swoons over a 117-day Regent world cruise with an exotic itinerary that looks just as amazing as the elegant ship itself. Yet that world cruise has a pretty amazing price tag to match. If you can catch the special fare, currently the cheapest cabin for this world cruise is $124,998 for a couple. Ouch.

When looking at the expenses of long-term travel, its often easier to conceptualize daily or monthly costs. This cruise breaks down to $534 per person, per day. Thats $32,000 for a couple, each month.

Any way you slice it yikes! And oddly enough, the Miami-to-Barcelona route of this world cruise doesnt even make it entirely around the world. But I digress. The point is: this world cruise is a mega-expensive trip, only for the wealthy!

Surely there must be cheaper world cruises. And there is.

Without flights, this cruise ultimately breaks down to $179 per person, per day, for the nearly 4-month voyage. We think this is actually an excellent deal for a fully around the world cruise! Yet what amounts to $10,000 for a couple, for each month of travel is still entirely too much for our frugal travel tendencies.

Or is it?

Countries visited during this journey include Argentina, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and Jordan. When you’re not exploring each port, you can relax in the swimming pools and hot tubs, visit the many restaurants, bars, and lounges, or go to the spa. Fares start at $27,230.

Our Cheap World Cruise Itinerary & Travel Stats:

This westward trip across Canada was actually the beginning stages of our journey entirely around the world without flights.

At the time, it was all just a rough sketch of varying ideas and possibilities. But this cheap world cruise would ultimately take us to:

  • visiting 35 Unesco World Heritage Sites,
  • sleeping in 74 beds, and
  • through over 100 different cities in the world!

The trip from Halifax completely around the globe and back took exactly 300 days, all without using a single flight.

Instead, we moved around the world using:

71 trains, 11 ferries + 1 river cruise, 7 rental cars, 6 long-distance taxis, and 4 ocean cruise ships that carried us around the world for a total of 2½ months!

Yet much more remarkable than our forms of transportation or where we slept each night, was the vast amount of amazing travel experiences we were so fortunate to have during this grand adventure around the world.

Highlights during the 10-month trip around the world included:

^Phew, and thats just the highlight reel. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Cruises For Singles In Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of “bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture.” She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option . This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises For Singles In Their 40s

How long do cruises last Most world cruises are three to four months ...

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but “appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They’re destination-immersive experiences.”

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship’s hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

What Should You Know About World Cruises

World cruises come in all shapes and sizes. Prospective travelers will find sailings as long as 180 nights on Oceania’s “180 Days Around the World” voyages, while some lines — like Cunard, Silversea, and MSC — are now running two or more World Cruises in a given calendar year. This means there are more opportunities than ever before to take one of these bucket list cruises.

A few things to note: Many world cruises don’t sail fully around the world, though they do offer a chance to see a varied portfolio of diverse cultures all in one sailing. Also, if you can’t commit to a full world cruise in 2023 or 2024, you can often book a “segment” of the voyage, typically ranging from a week to more than a month in duration.

World cruises usually begin in January and end in April or May, but some lines change it up with departures in other seasons, including summer and early winter. Cruise itineraries are still under development for 2025 and future years, so watch this space for more information as it becomes available.

How Much Does The World Cruise Cost

While sea passenger transport almost became obsolete in modern times due to air travel, one thing remains steady in terms of marine-related activities cruising. While this may sound like something just for the rich and famous, its definitely not.

How much does the world cruise cost exactly, and what can you do to minimize the cost if you are working on a budget? Please read on.

The Trip Lets Travelers See Three Oceans 34 Countries And 96 Destinations

After more than two years of closed borders, travel restrictions, and the uncertain future of cruises, Oceania is delivering the opportunity to make up for all the missed trips of the past, and travelers are eating them up. The cruise line offers an around-the-world cruise experience that will take customers to 34 different countries and across three oceans.

The cruise will set sail from Los Angeles on January 14, 2024. This ultra extensive trip put travelers out quite a lump sum of cash. Each persons ticket starts at $48,499. The hefty price tag includes roundtrip airfare to Los Angeles and New York, where the trip concludes.

Shockingly, it sold out in 30 minutes and set a single-day booking record for the company.

It is definitely an appealing journey, despite the price tag. Stops will include 100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including ports in Egypt, Ireland, Australia, Japan, and Vietnam. The trip is a follow-up to the already sold-out 2023 version of the journey, which will similarly sail for 180 days.

The response to our 2024 world cruise and the new grand voyages clearly illustrates the resiliency, enthusiasm, and passion that drive our guests to travel the world, stated President and CEO of Oceania Cruises, Howard Sherman, in a press release.

If you are looking for shorter and more affordable global cruise options, Oceania also offers 72 and 82-day versions of the journey, which you can book through the companys website.

How We Afforded A Cheap Cruise Entirely Around The World With These Travel Tricks

Is a cheap world cruise actually possible?

Thats the question we asked ourselves.

So we thoroughly investigated this seemingly unlikely potential, as we planned a trip entirely around the world without flights.

Over the past five years of our nonstop travels around the world, we make concerted efforts to pursue and uncover some of the best travel values in the world, while stretching our travel dollars as far as possible.

Its an open secret how traveling through cheaper destinations like Southeast Asia can be easily accomplished on a modest budget of $25 per day, or even less. Its actually quite easy to achieve a high standard of travel at a low cost in many parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe too. Its a proven strategy that has allowed us to travel well without spending a fortune over the course of the past several years.

But we also like getting off the well-worn backpacker trails and going beyond the worlds more economical nomad hotspots. We like to show how even seemingly extravagant travel experiences can be affordable. For example, weve proven how to visit the Galapagos on a Budget, take an African Safari for $50/Day, or even have a Luxury Trip to Egypt on a Budget.

Yet this past year we gave ourselves the biggest budget travel goal wed ever set out on: attempting a cheap around the world cruise.

The terms world cruise and budget travel are two contrasting phrases that dont normally mix. We want to prove that they can!

We did it all.

Cruises For Singles In Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers . Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking’s Grand European Tour, which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise, also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.
