Biggest Cruise Ship To Alaska

Don't Miss

Large Ship Line: Cunard

TROUBLE FOR THE WORLD’S LARGEST CRUISE COMPANY – Carnival Halts New Cruise Ship Construction

For those longing for the romantic nostalgia of bygone transatlantic sailings, Cunard is your go-to. The legendary cruise line was established in 1840 and has had dozens of ships in its fleet, though today, there are just three active vessels: the Queen Mary 2, the worlds only true transatlantic ocean liner, designed specifically for ocean crossings, as well as the worlds only pet-friendly ship the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria. Activities havent changed all that much in the last 180 yearstheres still a proper afternoon tea, black-tie dinners, and galas in the ballrooms. Its quite like a step back in time, with all the modern safety measures, of course. Cunards next ship, the Queen Anne, is scheduled to set sail in 2024.

The biggest cruise ship to sail Alaska waters made its first stop in Skagway May 23. The Explorer of the Seas carries nearly 5,000 people. KHNS took a tour of the floating city.

Ladies and gentlemen, good morning, everyone, and welcome aboard the Explorer of the Seas for this momentous occasion, said Captain Rick Sullivan. Its not just welcoming the ship, but it is also welcoming the largest cruise ship thats ever been to Skagway. That is history today. Thank you for increasing the length of the dock so we could fit here. Its kinda tight, right?

The Explorer tied up at the end of the railroad dock, right behind another massive ship the Celebrity Millennium. White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad had to build some additional infrastructure to accommodate the 1,000-foot-long Explorer.

You know, we have a new mooring dolphin. Weve done some other things for this and just the sheer volume that comes with it, said Tyler Rose of White Pass.

So whats inside such a colossal ship? Well, if youve ever wondered where you can find a shopping mall, ice-skating rink, rock-climbing wall and casino all in one place, floating on the ocean, this is it.

Which Side Of The Ship Is Better For Alaska Cruise

Cruise Lines International Association believes cruise ship passenger numbers will surpass 1.3 million next season. As is usual, 2022 started slow, building up during the summer months and slowing down again during September and October.

Just like any other season, our seasons tend to start maybe a little less full, and then their capacity rises and peaks in August or so and then sort of settles back down in September and October, and I think this year was the same.

I think we had a strong recovery this year, and our forecast is that well be stronger next year and likely return to the 2019 levels, if not a little bit higher,Reeves continued.

The cruise season is scheduled to start on April 17, 2023, when Norwegian Bliss is the first cruise ship to arrive back in Alaska. This is a whole week earlier than this year, plus the cruise season will end on October 25 next year, a week later than usual, with a call from Norwegian Sun.

Those extra two weeks will be needed to accommodate the enormous number of port calls that are scheduled for next season, 694 calls by 41 different cruise ships. These include the biggest cruise ships, such as Quantum of the Seas, and smaller cruise ships, such as the Windstar Star Breeze.

Alaskas First Large Cruise Ship Of The Year Arrives In Juneau

The Norwegian Bliss, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, is the first of roughly 600 voyages planned for Alaska this summer. The sailing season is set to end in mid October.

If all the ships scheduled to come to Alaska sailed at normal capacity, the state would see a record-breaking 1.5 million cruise ship passengers sailing to Alaska this year. Juneau officials say the actual figure is more likely to be around 1 million, down from the 1.3 million passengers who visited Alaska in 2019.

In 2020, Alaska saw no large cruise ships due to COVID-19 cancellations. Last year, an abbreviated sailing season saw around 10% of the normal number of passengers visit Alaska.

Business owners and local community leaders were excited about the return of a somewhat normal summer cruising season, and the projections that it would get more robust as the season progresses.

At normal capacity, Southeast Alaska could see record-breaking 1.5M cruise ship passengers

Jeff Rogers, finance director for the City and Borough of Juneau, said cruise ship passengers provide around $10-15 million in sales tax revenue each year and then roughly $15 million annually in passenger service fees.

a big part of how we pay for city government, how we pay for services on the waterfront, how we support visitation and tourism locally, Rogers said, explaining cruise ships provide around 20% of the citys total budget in any given year.

Best vacation ever! The cruise staff are fun, flexible and eager to please. The dramatic scenery in Alaska is incredible. It was definitely unrushed, uncrowded, unbelievable as their logo suggests. The whole week was perfect. Every day was a new adventure. The captain of the ship was quick to change course if an interesting opportunity came up. The rain sometimes found its way through waterproof jackets and rain-skirts on all day kayak trips, etc. COLD!!!!! I will upgrade my rain-gear for my next trip. I have always wanted to cruise the inside passage of Alaska but did not want to go on a large ship and could not afford the National Geographic cruises. I was also attracted by the ready access to kayaks, paddle boards, etc. on the ship.
