The Caribbean And Bahamas

The Caribbean and Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included the word Caribbean in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 18 vessels in the Caribbean and Bahamas year-round . But it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it sends a large portion of its ships here.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 18 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas for at least part of 2023 including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,100-passenger Norwegian Prima.

This is cabin 4101 on 4 Deck. The Man in Seat 61 says, “This is my own preferred cabin for a transatlantic crossing. Even at 20 knots in mid-Atlantic the balcony remains wind-free just as the word sheltered suggests. Some people say you won’t get much use out of a balcony on the Atlantic, but I loved being able to stroll outside at any time and stand at the rail watching the Atlantic drift past. On a sunny summer crossing off Newfoundland we did indeed sit outside, and even when inside, the French windows let in lots of natural light, making it a far nicer room than an inside or outside cabin, so upgrade if you can. I have yet to travel with a more expensive full-balcony cabin, but I expect those are a lot more windswept!”.

The Pros And Cons Of Cruising In Europe

Recently I was on a massive cruise ship with 3,000 passengers blitzing the great ports of the Mediterranean and having lots of fun. No, I’m not suddenly abandoning my independent travel principles and becoming a huge proponent of cruising. But I am impressed by the economy, efficiency, and popularity of this kind of traveland, to be honest, I enjoy cruising.

I’m the first to admit that cruising doesn’t appeal to everyone. For some, it’s anti-travel. For others, it’s the perfect vacation.

On our ship, I met people who seemed to be having a great timemost of them veterans of many cruises. I also met lots of budget-conscious travelers who told me that a cruise is a wonderful value.

The per-day base cost for mainstream cruises beats independent travel by a mile. For a weeklong European cruise, a couple can pay as little as $100 per person per night that’s less than most hotel rooms in London or Paris. To link all the places on your own with hotels, rail passes, boat tickets, taxi transfers, restaurants, and so on would add up fast. And you can’t beat the convenience and efficiency of sleeping while you travel to your next destination.

There are some negatives. There’s no denying that the cruising industry contributes to water, air, and marine-noise pollution but technology and consumer pressure are helping a bit. Environmental responsibility is such a hot topic that all the large cruise lines have website sections where you can evaluate their efforts.

The ship normally sails from New York at 17:00. This is the usual time, but please check for your specific departure date. You listen for the alarm bells, fetch your lifejackets from your stateroom and go to your allocated muster station where staff will brief you on emergency procedures and you’ll listen to an announcement by the captain. After this you’re free to go up on deck and admire the Manhattan skyline astern and the Statue of Liberty to starboard . At 17:00 she casts off, and with a band playing on her aft decks and glasses of champagne available she heads out to sea. Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty slowly disappear astern, and the QM2 heads toward and then underneath the huge Verrazano suspension bridge out into the Atlantic.
