Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Holland America Line suspended its entire fleet’s passenger shipping operations canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 13, 2020, through June 30, 2021.
HAL’s fleet was fully operational by June 12, 2022.

Since November 2017, HAL offers a “best price guarantee” for customers with pre-booked shore excursions . The new program is available fleetwide and on all cruise itineraries, excluding only voyages in Asia. That’s enabled when you insert your SeaPass card/room key on the machine you are playing or hand it to the dealer at a table game.
The cruise line uses your card to measure how much money you put through a slot or video-poker machine. At table games, it’s a less exact science, but unless you are a high roller, earning free cruises generally requires that you play slot machines.
For every $5 you cycle through a slot machine, you earn a point. On video-poker machines, it’s $10 per point. Notice that I said “cycle through,” not win or lose. It’s about how much money you play through the machines, not whether you spend a lot or somehow come home a winner.
Earning points does multiple things. First, points can be redeemed for free play, which you should do at the end of your cruise.
Second, Royal Caribbean has two definitive ways that your points translate into free cruises. One is based on your total annual points and the other on the sailing you are on.
Free-cruise certificates must generally be redeemed within 30 days. You may get a paper certificate delivered to your room or the casino host can print you one.
If you keep earning points and go up a level, the revised offer will appear on the Casino Royale website a few days after your cruise.

Who Sailed On Holland America Line’s First Voyage
Rotterdam I, Holland America’s first ship, carried 70 passengers on its first voyage in 1872, according to a fact sheet provided by the line. On the roughly 270-foot-long ship, 10 passengers sailed in first class while 60 sailed in third class, also known as steerage, and the crew was on board.
By contrast, the current Rotterdam the seventh Holland America ship with that name measuring 984 feet long carried about 1,900 passengers on the anniversary sailing.
The first-class passengers on the original voyage were likely “merchant types” or business people, according to Bill Miller, a maritime historian who gave lectures during the cruise last month. “I wouldn’t think there’s much tourism going to New York in 1872 for summer vacation,” he said. Those in the third class were generally poorer, and one-class cruising was not introduced until many years later.
Passengers emigrating were “people seeking religious, economic and political freedom” in the U.S., Miller said. Some were from The Netherlands, while others were from Germany or Eastern Europe.
First-class tickets back then cost $36, while tickets for third class cost between $20 and $25, according to the fact sheet.

Holland America Smoking Policy
Implemented in January 2017, Holland America Line has a new cruise ship smoking policy banning smoking on all cabin balconies. As previously, in-cabin smoking is also not allowed. Smoking E-cigarettes and vaping devices is permitted in designated areas, as well as inside passenger staterooms .
Passengers who violate the company’s ship’ smoking policy will be fined a cleaning fee USD 250 per day.
