Dominican Republic At High Risk Of Covid

The Level 3 rating from the CDC is now the highest level of travel warning, after the CDC overhauled its warning levels on April 18. With the addition of the Dominican Republic to the list on June 27, 2022, there are now 113 countries around the world at that same classification of travel risk.

The Dominican Republic had previously been classified as Level 2, Moderate risk.

Located between Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is a popular and beautiful cruise destination. The two most popular ports are Amber Cove and Puerto Plata, both located on the northwest shore.

Cruise lines calling on the Dominican Republic in the next few weeks include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises.

At this time, no cruise lines have announced itinerary changes or port cancelations for visits to the Dominican Republic, nor are cruise lines reinstating onboard mask mandates or other elevated health protocols for ships visiting either Amber Cove or Puerto Plata.

Guests can, of course, always choose to wear masks, increase their use of hand sanitizer, or opt to stay onboard when their ship visits any port of call with an elevated risk level.

Construction Underway On Two New Caribbean Cruise Ports

Two more cruise Caribbean cruise ports are currently under construction, the Port Cabo Rojo and Samana Bayport, both in the Dominican Republic.

With construction on the new Cabo Rojo cruise port well underway, the Dominican Republic aims to become the Caribbeans top cruise destination.

Set to open towards the end of 2023, the new cruise port is a $126 million project that will have space for four cruise ships at any one time and is filled with activities close by, while the area itself is one of the top destinations on the island.

At the same time, the country is investing in the Samana cruise port, which could bring back ships from Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Executives from both cruise lines recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

Your best bet is to arrange a tour ahead of time, or hire a taxi. The latter won’t set you back more than a few pesos. Note that tour operators and taxis are required to wait outside the port gates, which are guarded by tourist police.

The CDC has elevated the COVID-19 risk level for a popular Caribbean destination – are you scheduled to visit, and what does this mean?

On June 27, 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention elevated the COVID-19 travel risk warning for the Dominican Republic from Level 2 to Level 3 , indicating greater spread of the disease and stronger risk of transmission for visitors.

Travelers who are not up-to-date on their vaccinations, including eligible booster shots, are now advised to avoid traveling to the Dominican Republic, and it is recommended that all visitors ages 2 and older wear masks in public indoor settings.

Other Level 3 Cruise Ports

In addition to the Dominican Republic, other destinations listed as Level 3 include popular Caribbean cruise ports such as Mexico, Jamaica, the Turks and Caicos , Belize, The Bahamas, Aruba, Bermuda, Curacao, and the Cayman Islands.

Other popular cruise ports elsewhere in the world classified at Level 3 include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and many more.

Many of these destinations have been at the Level 3 rating since April 18, 2022, when the CDC first updated its classifications. This travel rating does not mean ports must close or cruise ships must adjust health and safety protocols in order to visit the destinations, including the Dominican Republic. Ground Breaking Ceremony For Expansion Of Saman Bayport

Last week saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of another popular cruise port in the Dominican Republic. The Samaná Bayport will be one of the biggest tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic, capable of handling 10,000 passengers per day, bringing it in line with Puerto Plata.

Already a popular stopover port for Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new terminal building, restaurants, retail shops, piers for water transport and excursions, marina, information center, and recreation areas were attended to by officials from Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.

It makes clear the intense interest of the cruise industry to expand to new and newly developed destinations. The port, which will be completed in late 2023 or early 2024, will have space for one vessel at a new floating pier and several anchorage positions.

Situated at the islands Northern coastline, Samana is ideally located for cruises that visit the eastern Caribbean but also sailing from New York, Boston, and other homeports on the easter seaboard.

We have had a great boom in cruise ships and we intend to continue expanding, we are talking about having a projection of going from three to six terminals. Cases like Cabo Rojo in Pedernales, with the new terminal, Barahona a province where it has always dreamed of receiving cruise ships and we are already working on a plan, as well as in Samaná and Arroyo Barril, which will be carried out through Public Private Partnerships,said Port Authority executive director Jean Luis Rodríguez.

With a new 126 million dollar cruise port under construction at Puerto Cabo Rojo, the country is getting ready for significantly more cruise ship passengers over the coming years. Once complete, the Puerto Cabo Rojo cruise port will have a maximum capacity of over a million cruise ship passengers annually.

The area will have four berths, entertainment, shopping, a spa, a beach area, and a water park. Set to be complete by the end of 2023, it will make the port one of the more prominent players in the Caribbean.

While construction here began last month, the Dominican Republic is also expanding its cruise ship operations in the Samaná Bayport.

Dominican Republic Travel Surge To Generate Seven Million 2022 Visitors

Implementing a COVID entry policy that stages included state-funded visitor travel insurance during the pandemics early stages, the Dominican Republic is authoring a strong tourism rebound after hosting more than 2.2 million visitors in the first four months of 2022.

The Dominican Republic expects to host seven million land-based and cruise ship visitors in 2022 said government officials at the recent Dominican Annual Travel Exchange conference.

The rebound comes following the governments implementation of policies intended to attract visitors following the March 2020 pandemics outset, they said.

We closed the best month of April in the history of Dominican Republic tourism, David Collado, the countrys minister of tourism said at DATE, with over 600,000 tourists, surpassing any April in the countrys history.

He added, We broke records the greatest entry of foreigners in the history of Dominican tourism, 736,000 people. May will undoubtedly be the best in the history of the Dominican Republics tourism.

Royal Caribbean Very Satisfied With The Dominican Republics Boost To Cruises

The global director of port operations of Royal Caribbean, Jaime Castillo, expressed his satisfaction with the investments being made in the cruise sector in the Dominican Republic, both in the northern part of the country as well as in the south with the project that will be initiated in Cabo Rojo, Pedernales, to provide a better experience for visitors.

He explained to arecoa.com that the industry would continue to grow because of the public-private sectors referred investments. The ship portfolio of the entire industry, not only of us as Royal Caribbean Group, has constancy and strength to continue with sustained growth in the coming years without stopping, and the Dominican Republic will benefit from that.

Castillo stressed that Royal Caribbean has interesting touches in the country, which is why they maintain their bet that is consolidated with the upcoming arrival in Puerto Plata of one of the largest ships in the world, the Oasis of the Seas.

The cruise ship will touch port in the North zone at the end of this year 2022 in addition two of our brands, both Celebrity Cruice and Royal Caribbean, are touching the area of Puerto Plata, Samaná and La Romana, that is, we have a very good presence on the island, he added.

He said that ultimately in Puerto Plata, the arrival of their cruise ships will increase significantly and that in Samaná, because of the reinvestment being made with the construction of the cruise port and tourist terminal Samaná Bayport, as well.
