A Princess Cruises Cabin Primer

As is typical for many cruise ships, Princess vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless inside cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

As noted above, a significant portion of cabins on all Princess ships are balcony cabins the category of cabin that everyone wants these days. About 80% of the 1,834 cabins on Princesss six-month-old Enchanted Princess are balcony cabins or suites with balconies, for instance. Compare that to the 72% of cabins on Royal Caribbeans four-year-old Symphony of the Seas that are balcony cabins or suites with balconies.

Notably, every single cabin facing the sea on three of the newest Princess ships Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess has a balcony. These three vessels are completely devoid of ocean-view cabins . Thats relatively unusual in the world of big mass-market ships the niche of cruising in which Princess plays. Its more common with luxury cruise vessels.

At the same time, as noted above, Princess vessels have fewer suites than youll find on the ships operated by such big-ship brands as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

Heres a breakdown of the broad cabin categories on Royal Princess, which is typical of the lines newer ships :

Inside cabins: 342 Balcony cabins : 1,402 Suites: 36

On Coral Princess, inside cabins and ocean-view cabins only make up 26% of all rooms. A breakdown of the cabin categories on that ship:

Layout Of A Discovery Princess Balcony Cabin

At first glance, we noticed a similar setup to our stateroom on Majestic Princess.

Immediately entering our stateroom, the bathroom and closet were off to the right of the cabin in their own little corner offset from the rest of the room.

Beyond the bathroom and closest was the main cabin area with a queen-sized bed on the right wall . There was a small night stand on each side of the bed, each with two drawers for storage and a USB outlet within the lamp.

Across from the bed was the television with on-demand TV.

Continuing past the bed was the desk and a small chest housing the mini-fridge.

In this Discovery Princess balcony cabin, the desk was immediately beyond the bed on the right wall and abutting essentially right up to the balcony door. The desk was on par with size to comparable megaships. Although, it lacked any above desk shelving. It did have power outlets and three drawers for storage.

With these being the ONLY outlets in the room and limited space at the desk, we had to get creative for storing and charging all our devices.

Across from the desk was a small cabinet that housed the mini-fridge. It contained a few narrow exterior shelves but not much in terms of additional storage space. Further, there were no additional outlets here.

While exactly like our cabin on Majestic Princess, this is atypical compared to competitor brands that usually offer more of a dresser setup.

Balconies With No Privacy

D145 to D277, D701 to D725

On Deck 9 some staterooms have double-size balconies. While this can certainly be seen as a positive, its important to note that these balconies are overlooked by the balconies above.

The reason why these Deluxe Balconies are so large is that they jut out further than all of the rest. So, while you might enjoy the extra space, anyone above you looking down will see right onto your balcony. Theres no privacy unless you stand right at the back.

Discovery Princess Balcony Cabins

Discovery Princess – The Ultimate Tour of Princesses Newest Ship!

Most people who want to enjoy a bit of natural light on their Discovery Princess cruise are going to book a balcony cabin. These give you your own private area to enjoy the views and fresh air, as well as a little bit of extra space for your room in general. Your balcony is connected to your cabin via sliding doors.

The vast majority of cabins on Discovery Princess have a balcony, but not all balconies are created equal. There are suites with much larger balconies, while some cabins just have slightly bigger ones due to the layout of the ship. If you choose the cheapest balcony cabin, dont expect to have loads of room to relax outside.

And a balcony cabin doesnt guarantee you an amazing view, either. Some have obstructed views, though youll be told of this when you book, so you wont get a surprise.

There are five different types of balcony cabin on Discovery Princess:

  • Deluxe Balcony with Obstructed View
  • Premium Deluxe Balcony

The cabins with obstructed views are situated on Deck 8, which is where the lifeboats are hung. Every balcony cabin thats close to a lifeboat is considered to have an obstructed view, even if you actually have a view between the lifeboats. So, you can be clever and save some money if you book one of these more on that later.

Some of the Balcony cabins that sleep up to four guests have Pullman beds that will block access to the sliding balcony doors.

This isnt a problem when theyre folded up during the day, but if you wanted to nip outside to enjoy the sunrise while your kids are asleep, make sure not to book one of these rooms.

Balconies That You Cant Use While At Sea

L101 to L108, M101 to M108

Some of the cabins at the front of the ship forego a balcony in favour of a window , but there are some that have balconies. You need to be aware that you cant use these balconies while the ship is sailing, because of the high wind speeds.

To compensate, the balconies tend to be larger, so when youre in port you have more space to enjoy. But avoid booking these rooms if you want the freedom to use your balcony while sailing.

Inside The Discovery Princess Balcony Cabin

Bathroom/Closet Area

The bathroom in the Discovery Princess Balcony Cabin was fairly typical, though a bit smaller than some newer ships from competitor cruise lines.

The bathroom had the toilet positioned between the shower and the vanity area. The shower itself had a curtain and felt a bit small as well. It did feature a narrow, full length shelf at the far end, as well as shampoo and body wash dispensers.

The vanity area contains a few small shelves to the right and some counter space. Overall, there was adequate storage for the week. It also helps that we always bring an over-the-door shoe organizer to store toiletries and other small items.

The closet configuration provided plenty of storage for the two of us on a 7-day cruise. It consisted of a full length clothes bar with plenty of hangers. There was also an additional shelving unit with 5 shelves and the safe.

Main Cabin Area

The Princess Luxury bed in this Discovery Princess Balcony Cabin provided adequate comfort during our trip. We had no issues falling asleep after our long days and nights on the ship. We also appreciated the USB outlets near the bed for charging our phones overnight.

While the desk area had a mirror, adequate counter space, and outlets, it served mostly as my spot to get ready each day.

Further, we missed the additional storage in this section of the stateroom. The desk did have three small drawers, with one housing the hair dryer, but there was no additional dresser.

Rooms That Can Make Seasickness Worse

S101 to S215, L101 to L129

While most large ships dont tend to be too bad for sufferers of seasickness, as they mask the motion, its still better to avoid a cabin in a high location near the front of the ship if you do get sick. Youll feel the least movement in a mid-ship location on a lower deck instead.

Recap Of Our Discovery Princess Balcony Cabin Review

This Discovery Princess balcony cabin was very similar to our experiences on Majestic Princess last year. Though, it did have an updated color palette for a more upscale feel. It included very neutral tones, with light woods and soft blue accents.

The location of this cabin was very convenient being right next to a bank of elevators. Yet, it was not noisy as a result.

The overall size of the cabin was on par with other cruise lines minus the sitting area. While we were happy with the closet space, storage and outlets in the main cabin area were a bit lacking for a new cruise ship. The bathroom did feel a bit smaller as well.

With less furniture and less storage space in this main cabin area, it took some creative unpacking to fit all our gear. Still, we did manage to find a way to get things situated in our home away from home for the week.

Princess Cruises Ship Cabin And Suite Guide: Everything You Want To Know

Explore the Discovery Princess Cruise Ship | Princess Cruises

Is a balcony cabin a must for you when you cruise? Princess Cruises could be your line.

The California-based brand was a pioneer in adding a large number of balcony cabins to ships, and even its oldest vessels are loaded with balcony cabins something that cant be said for many of its rivals.

On the flip side, Princess offers relatively few suites on its ships compared to some of the big-ship lines with which it most directly competes, including Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Just 46 of the 1,830 rooms on the lines recently unveiled Discovery Princess are suites, for instance. Believe it or not, thats an improvement from earlier vessels in the same series, some of which have as few as 36 suites.

Princess also isnt known for enormous and amenity-filled suites.

What this means is there arent a lot of ways to live large on a Princess ship or pack a lot of people into a single accommodation. Until the debut of Sky Princess in 2019, the line didnt have a single cabin that could accommodate more than four people.

That said, on Princess ships, you can often create larger living spaces by booking two connecting cabins.

Discovery Princess Inside Cabins

If youre looking to spend the least amount of money on your cruise holiday, consider an inside or interior cabin. These rooms are completely enclosed on all four sides there are no windows.

Theyre also usually the smallest rooms on the ship, although not always some of the rooms are a little bigger, so if space is important make sure to pick one of those.

No windows of course means no natural light youll spend all of your cabin time under the artificial glow of a lightbulb. This may not bother you at all especially if youre the kind of person who uses their cabin just as a place to sleep and get ready.

Theres always an open deck with plenty of natural light just a short walk away, after all. But for others, it may be too off-putting to not have any window or outside view.

In an inside cabin, the beds are laid out as twin as default, but theyre called zip and lock beds, meaning they can be zipped together to create a large double if you prefer.

Some inside cabins can sleep up to 4 people, and theyll have Pullman beds as the extra beds. Pullman beds are extra beds that are either attached to the wall and fold down, or theyre hidden in the ceiling and can be pulled down. While adults could in theory use these, they are really better left for children.

On Discovery Princess, the Pullman beds in inside cabins are the wall-mounted kind, but in higher cabin grades you may get the ceiling ones.
