How Much Does It Cost To Sail Around The World

This is it- the big question that everyone wants answered! How much does it cost to sail around the world? We try and answer this question as best we can in this weeks video.

Heres a breakdown of what we believe a realistic cost to be:

  • Boat: $30,000 upwards. Most cruisers who are planning circumnavigation or offshore cruising will buy a boat that is considerably more expensive than this. We would recommend that if youre buying used, its best to buy a boat that is already kitted out.
  • Monthly budget for 2 people in the Caribbean and Europe: $3000
  • Slush fund: as much as you can afford! We would recommend at least $5000 in savings to deal with any unforeseen circumstances. The older the boat, the more you may need in repairs, maintenance & equipment.
  • Equipment: weve spent about $20,000 on equipment purely designed for offshore and trade wind passage making. Therefore, if you are planning to limit your cruising to a cruising ground such as the Caribbean, you may not need any of these items. They include: Parasailor, SSB radio, hydrovane, Watt and Sea hydrogenerator, wind generator, solar panels, Yellow Brick tracker, laptop for receiving GRIB files at sea , flares, and spare parts. This doesnt include basics such as autopilot, AIS, life-raft, EPIRB, sat phone, and code zero sail, fishing rods and lures, BBQ, cool box, etc.

We hope you find this video informative and helpful!

A waterproof coat will keep you warm and dry if the weather takes a turn for the worse, while cardigans and shirts are perfect for layering over T-shirts and dresses when you need a lighter cover-up.

Be aware that on top of visas some countries may also require you to have certain vaccinations, so it’s best to look into this also. Seek advice from your travel agent or a doctor if you are unsure.

How Much It Cost Us To Travel The World

Here, were going into the deep details to fully break down the cost of our entire trip around the world. This trip budget includes all four cruises that we took, in addition to detailing the expenses of our stints traveling overland across the worlds most expensive nations.

We feel a bit naked revealing our personal finances and spending habits. But we are doing this because we want to show exactly how it is possible to actually afford a trip of this caliber.

Heres how we broke it all down. Our travel expenses during the ten-month journey can be grouped into four large categories of costs:

  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • The cruises themselves

Before drilling down into our detailed financial data, its worthwhile to take a second to understand some accounting challenges we faced when tracking our travel expenses.

It was tricky to categorize because many of these groupings often overlap. For example, we regularly seek out accommodation that includes breakfast and are willing to pay a bit more for that. We even stayed at some business hotels in Japan that further included complimentary curry rice for dinner . In such instances, we only allocated the expense to accommodation, even though the price we paid for the hotel covered two breakfasts and two dinners.

So lets take a look!

Make sure to take into account that restaurants can be more expensive in some countries . The worst case scenario is that you save some money.

How We Afforded A Cheap Cruise Entirely Around The World With These Travel Tricks

How much does it cost to sail around the world? Sailing Q& A 41

Is a cheap world cruise actually possible?

Thats the question we asked ourselves.

So we thoroughly investigated this seemingly unlikely potential, as we planned a trip entirely around the world without flights.

Over the past five years of our nonstop travels around the world, we make concerted efforts to pursue and uncover some of the best travel values in the world, while stretching our travel dollars as far as possible.

Its an open secret how traveling through cheaper destinations like Southeast Asia can be easily accomplished on a modest budget of $25 per day, or even less. Its actually quite easy to achieve a high standard of travel at a low cost in many parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe too. Its a proven strategy that has allowed us to travel well without spending a fortune over the course of the past several years.

But we also like getting off the well-worn backpacker trails and going beyond the worlds more economical nomad hotspots. We like to show how even seemingly extravagant travel experiences can be affordable. For example, weve proven how to visit the Galapagos on a Budget, take an African Safari for $50/Day, or even have a Luxury Trip to Egypt on a Budget.

Yet this past year we gave ourselves the biggest budget travel goal wed ever set out on: attempting a cheap around the world cruise.

The terms world cruise and budget travel are two contrasting phrases that dont normally mix. We want to prove that they can!

We did it all.

Too Expensive Heres How To Lower The Cost

Theres no doubt that its expensive to live on a cruise ship, but there are ways that you can trim that amount. If youre interested in cutting down the price, here are a few ideas.

Limit Onboard Spending: In our estimate, we used the average spending Carnival Corporation sees across all its cruise lines, which is 45% of the cruise fare.

You dont have to spend near that much. After all, when people cruise they are on vacation and likely willing to spend more freely than they would normally. By limiting the amount spent on board, you can cut thousands off this estimated total.

Its doubtful you can get by without spending at least some money on a cruise, but our estimate comes out to about $450 per person, per week. Being able to spend less than that should be relatively easy.

Older Ships: Our estimate is aboard the Carnival Horizon. We chose this ship because it is relatively new , but it also runs a regular schedule from Miami.

That said, in general newer ships like the Horizon are more expensive to sail aboard. If you look for older ships, you should be able to cut the price down.

Be Flexible for Cheaper Trips: For this estimate, we priced out a years worth of cruises on a single ship. This makes it easy if youre sailing long-term you simply stay on the ship and dont have to worry about changing ships, or ports.
