Is Hawaii Open For Cruise Ships

Pride Of America Ship Details And History

Boarding NCL Pride of America – FOUR ISLAND Cruise Around HAWAII ( Full Ship Tour)

The U.S.-registered ship operates under the Jones Act and is the only major cruise ship which operates exclusively within Hawaii. All other cruise ships must have at least one international port of call as part of their Hawaii itinerary.

The Pride of America was built in 2005 and was last updated in 2016. The ship has a capacity of 2,186 passengers. It features 15 decks, is 920 feet long, has 230 inside cabins, 865 outside cabins.

The Pride of America was originally called Project America 1. It was one of two ships built with U.S. government subsidies and was designed to improve the competitiveness of American shipbuilding. The plan for the ship began in 1998 and the program under which it was built ended in 2001. Its parent company at the time, American Classic Voyages, went bankrupt. After suspension of construction, when the ship was only 40% complete, NCL acquired the partially-built boat. It was towed to Germany for completion under the name Pride of America. Before it could be completed, a major storm damaged the ship and caused it to partially sink. That required extensive repairs as the ship was under water for more than one month.

Some of the ships restaurants will remain shuttered until adequate crew is found to staff them, with NCL indicating itll ramp up slowly.

NCL has decided to stop selling Pride of America cruises until at least November 2022.

Why Did Ncl Cancel Hawaii Cruises

Because Norwegian Cruise Line had trouble manning the Pride of America when it was in Hawaii, the company was forced to bump certain customers in order to maintain reasonable capacity levels. According to statements made by management over the previous month, the Pride of America was already operating at less than half of its capacity owing to personnel concerns.

Cruise Lines Look To 2022 To Return To Hawaii

In November, Viking Cruises cancelled two 16-night Hawaii sailings on that were to embark Los Angeles in December, one of which was a Christmas and New Years holiday cruise. Replacing the Hawaii cruises is a Mexico itinerary calling in La Paz, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas , with eight days sailing the Pacific Ocean. Guests were offered shipboard credit on the new itinerary , the option of alternative itineraries booked by Nov. 21, or a full refund.

“While restrictions have been eased in most destinations around the world, the impacts of the pandemic continue to make cruise travel particularly complicated in some specific locations,” said Richard Marnell, executive vice president, said in a letter to impacted guests. “When we developed our Hawaiian Island Sojourn voyage, travel to Hawaii was possible.”

Carnival Cruise Line had also cancelled a two-week Carnival Journeys sailing aboard Carnival Miracle from Long Beach that had been scheduled to embark on Nov. 28, and was to visit several of the Hawaiian Islands and Ensenada. “While the ship is ready and we agreed to all the protocols required by the State, they will not be ready to restart cruising in Hawaii until 2022,” John Heald, the lines brand ambassador, said on Facebook. Future cruise credits were offered, as were refunds.

Princess Cruises also cancelled a sailing that was to cruise to Hawaii, roundtrip from Australia. Australia is also closed to international ships.

NCL said that while sales are great, theyre unable to keep up with staffing requirements to get the ship fully functional. To operate normally, the ship has a minimum of 920 staff, but currently they have fewer than 550. As a result, NCL said that it is limiting its occupancy to no more than 1200 guests.

Staff shortages are continuing throughout Hawaii businesses, Now it goes far beyond just restaurants and cruise ships.

One company, Sysco, will pay a $10k signup bonus if you become a Hawaii truck driver based in Honolulu. Weve seen posters in front of businesses across the state offering similar bonuses. Nursing is especially short-staffed, and there, too, greater than $10k signup bonuses arent unusual.

First Cruise Ship To Hawaii In 2 Years Arrives With Positive Covid

The first cruise ship to Hawaii in two years arrived with multiple COVID-19 cases in isolation. A state official said those who tested positive have not left the ship.

Grand Princess, which departed from Los Angeles on Jan. 4, arrived in Honolulu on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Speaking to The Conversation, state Department of Transportation spokesperson Jai Cunningham said the cruise line has reported multiple positive COVID-19 cases although declined to give numbers on passengers or staff.

“The important thing is the people that were quarantined did not come onto Oahu and until they test negative, will not be allowed in the state,” Cunningham said. “So very much like the planes, there’s this process in place to try and keep anyone who is infected with COVID, not walking around amongst us, if you will.”

The ship has a capacity of about 3,000 but is traveling with a reduced capacity due to the virus. There are 1,188 passengers and just under 1,000 crew members.

Under the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions color-coded system for cruise ships, Grand Princess has a yellow status. That means the reported cases of COVID-19 have met the threshold for CDC investigation.

The criteria for “yellow” status includes cases reported in 0.10% or more of passengers, or one or more cases among the crew.

Grand Princess also required passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within two days of embarkation in Los Angeles.

How Many Passengers Does A Cruise Ship Have In Hawaii

Since the cruise industry was forced to halt operations due to the COVID-19 epidemic in early 2020, the 2,590-passenger ship is the first from any major cruise company to visit Hawaii. One of the last major cruise destinations around the world to reopen to large cruise ships is Hawaii. Cruise ships may now once again visit Hawaii.

State Continues To Ban Cruise Ship Passengers Until End Of The Year

HONOLULU – The state Department of Transportation said no cruise ship passengers will be arriving in Hawaii this year despite lifted travel restrictions.

DOT said it will not approve any port calls, but said plans are in the works to allow ships to dock in early 2022.

Cruise ships carrying passengers to Hawaii have been halted since the start of the pandemic following concerns of COVID outbreaks occurring on board.

Meanwhile, under a conditional sail order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all cruise ships require an agreement with most ports in order to dock.

The order is set to expire on Jan. 15, but it could be extended.

A cruise ship hasnt docked in Hawaii since the beginning of the pandemic, but if all goes according to plan, ships will kick off their long-awaited return next month.

In January, five cruise ships are scheduled to make port at Honolulu harbor, bringing more than 8,000 passengers to the island of Oahu.

All along, people pictured that this would be something to celebrate, a sign that the tourism industry – and the global situation – had crawled its way back to normalcy.

But medical experts interviewed by Hawaii News Now said the timing couldnt be worse, with the Omicron variant spreading rapidly and case counts rising.

While the Hawaii government has not reinstated any travel restrictions, it did issue strong recommendations and warnings against large gatherings.

At this stage, there is absolutely no way we should be considering having cruise ships stopping in Honolulu or any of our neighbor islands, one doctor told the outlet.

Still, some in the travel industry are trying to make the case that its safer to have passengers arrive via cruise ship than by plane.

Is Hawaii Allowing Cruise Ships In 2022

  • According to Cunningham, the agency does not anticipate approving port calls for cruise vessels with passengers this year.
  • However, the state does anticipate completing an agreement with the cruise lines, which, if approved by the parties, would allow cruises to resume in early 2022.

Cruise Ships Are Set To Return To Hawaii With Covid Protocols

Hawaii Islands with San Francisco Stay, 19 February 2020

Cruise ships are poised to return to Hawaii waters.

The state Department of Transportation has finalized agreements with Carnival and Norwegian cruise lines to enable them to call at Hawaii ports.

The agreements set out protocols for how to deal with COVID-related medical emergencies onboard, as well as policies on quarantining passengers.

The cruise lines also acknowledge pandemic rules and regulations of local jurisdictions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires all ships to have on-board testing capabilities and medical staff available to respond to an outbreak. Carnival and Norwegian must ensure that all passengers are fully vaccinated and oversee on-board cleaning and safety procedures.

In addition, cruise ships will have to abide by the states Safe Travels program, which requires passengers to upload their vaccination status.

The requirement will not apply to ships traveling interisland.

More information on vaccine and testing sites can be found at hawaiicovid19.com

Hawaii Cruises Resumed In January

I was aboard the first Holland America ship to return to Hawaii since November 2019. Other cruise lines, including Carnival and Princess, also resumed Hawaii sailings in January.

The cruise, heavy on sea days, started and ended in San Diego. After a stop in Catalina Island 22 miles west of mainland California we were at sea five days before reaching Honolulu on the island of Oahu. We also visited Maui and spent three days exploring Hawaiis Big Island so named because its larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.

We were anchored for two days off the coast of Kailua-Kona on the Big Islands relatively dry western side, home of most of the islands resorts.

In Kona, we toured coffee plantations and hiked through a cloud forest on the slopes of the Huallai Volcano, 3,000 feet above sea level. We also visited the Puuhonua o Hnaunau National Historical Park, where ruling chiefs would grant absolution to Hawaiian lawbreakers and vanquished warriors.

On our final day in Hawaii, the Koningsdam was docked on the more tropical eastern side of the island in Hilo, a gateway to picturesque waterfalls and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Hilo is the rainiest city in the United States, averaging 211 days of precipitation each year. Fortunately, we had sunny skies, ideal for viewing the snow-capped Mauna Kea volcano. Its peak is 13,803 feet above sea level, making it the highest point in the state.

Cruises To Hawaii Impacted On Big Ships

Despite last-ditch efforts by cruise lines, Hawaii will not be open to most large-scale cruise ships for the remainder of this year, leaving some passengers out in the cold.

Whether big-ship cruises will be allowed to resume in January 2022 is still a question mark.

“Currently, the earliest resumption of cruises to Hawaii would be January of 2022, Jai Cunningham, public information officer for the Hawaii Department of Transportation told Cruise Critic. “While no firm date is currently set, HDOT, in coordination with the various State, Federal, and Local entities, is focused on the safest possible resumption of cruise.”

Officials told Cruise Critic on December 10 that discussions regarding port agreements are still ongoing.

“The State is currently negotiating Port Agreements with various cruise lines that includes the States Safe Travel requirements,” officials said. “The CDCs Conditional Sailing Order requires Port Agreements and executed between the port authority, local health authority, and the cruise line prior to a cruise ship resuming operations.”

Uncruise Granted Permission To Operate In Hawaii State Closed To Big Cruise Ships Until At Least January

    — After reaching an agreement with state and local officials, small ship line UnCruise Adventures announed late Wednesday it has restarted cruises in Hawaii, operating the first sailings in the state in more than 20 months.

Hawaiian officials have not yet approved a restart for larger cruise ships.

The 36-passenger kicked off the season sailing around the less-visited island of Molokai, including exploration in the Halawa Valley. The line has not yet received permission to operate in Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii but is continuing to work with authorities on those islands regarding “operational details,” said Dan Blanchard, owner of UnCruise Adventures.

The cruise company is operating 100 percent vaccinated sailings, with testing requirements for both guests and crew.

“We have worked diligently to ensure that Hawaiis residents are safe and confident in our operations,” Blanchard said. “It is humbling to be granted permission to operate.”
