Viking Danube River Cruise: Stateroom

Viking River Cruises Danube Waltz â Passau to Budapest River Cruise

On our river cruise, we had a veranda stateroom. We loved the balcony, especially during daytime sailings. While in port there are times you will find that two Viking ships are docked next to each other. You may or may not have a view during the port calls depending on how the boats are docked.

Room Details:

  • 95 comfortable outside staterooms
  • All suites feature two rooms with a veranda off the living room and a French balcony in the bedroom
  • Hotel-style bed topped with European linens and duvets

Let’s Go Bicycle Ride Along The Inn River

The Inn River rises in the Alps, near Innsbruck and flows through three nations on its way to Passau, where it joins the Danube. While the Danube bike path may be Europes best-known route for bicyclists, the Inn River bike path, which follows the river from Innsbruck to Passau, has plenty of fans. The route through the Inn River valley outside Passau is an especially attractive stretch, with great views of the lovely countryside, picturesque villages and the sparkling clear river itself. Your guide will make sure you know the local traffic and safety rules before you and your group set out along the partly flat and paved path. Youll be traveling on both sides of the river, crossing between Germany and Austria as you cross the Inn, and your journey will include a comfort stop before returning to the ship. All in all, its an idyllic way to enjoy the scenery and get some exercise at the same time.

Let’s Go Hike along the Ilz River

Put on your hiking boots, grab a windbreaker and a bottle of water, and head out with a local hiking guide and nature expert to explore the banks of the Ilz River. This small but rushing tributary of the Danube originates deep in the Bavarian Forest, near the Czech border, and is just 40 miles (65…

Esk Krumlov The Czech Republic

Perhaps it was the indulgence of checking off another country that swayed the majority of passengers to do this tour. Or, was it the allure of seeing first hand Bohemias quintessential fairytale town.

The word Fairytale gets bandied around a lot, especially in this part of Europe. However, eský Krumlov, described as a Medieval Treasure on a Meandering River is well deserved of the title.

Clusters of gabled roofs punctuated with medieval spires encircled by the Vltava River. eský Krumlov is the stuff of fairytales.

It is only an hour and a half bus ride from Linz to eský Krumlov through the astonishingly beautiful Czech countryside.

Even though the excursion looks like a long day, eský Krumlov is an easy and delightful day trip.

Esk Krumlov Walking Tour

Classical Danube Passau to Budapest

From the towns highest point the walking tour takes you down the castle hill. You will pass through the Castle Garden, eský Krumlov Castle, the Cloak Bridge and the Upper and Little Castle finishing in the town centre.

It is a relatively quick walking tour aimed to give you some history and context as well as some bearings for you to explore the lovely town on your own.

An afternoon to spare allows ample time to wander around the charming town and, enjoy a nice slow lunch savouring local dishes.

There is no shortage of good restaurants, cafes and more importantly, microbreweries where you can sample some of the brews the Czechs are famous for. Best of all, it is an excellent value for money.

eský Krumlov was a definite highlight for us, and the tour sets a lovely leisurely pace.

Our only regret was we didnt know of the possibility of hiring a canoe to enjoy the scenic town from the water. We would have dressed accordingly as we certainly had enough time.

Melk Abbey With Library Visit

The Babenbergs, a great medieval ducal family that controlled a wide swath of Austria before yielding to the Habsburgs, were the first to erect a castle on the hill above Melk, which they subsequently gave to Benedictine monks. These monks, some 900 years ago, turned it into a fortified abbey and the greatest center of learning in Central Europe. Their library was celebrated far and wide . Monks there created more than 1,200 manuscripts, sometimes spending an entire lifetime hand-lettering a single volume. Today the library contains some 100,000 volumes, among them more than 80,000 works printed before 1800. This beautiful complex, completely redone in the early 18th century, is a wonderful example of baroque art and architecture, and the views from its terrace are spectacular. As you walk through the abbeys Marble Hall with your guide, look up at the ceiling fresco painted by Paul Troger: Those classical gods and goddesses represent Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, allegorically bringing his people from darkness to light and demonstrating the link he claimed to the original Roman Empire.

Dürnstein village stroll with spiced wine tasting and organ concert in a monastery

Considering its diminutive size, the village of Dürnstein offers much to explore. The famous blue baroque tower of the abbey church is doubtless its best-known landmark, but the ruined castle above the town provides its most romantic tale. There Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned until he…

Mozart & Strauss Concert

Danube Map Passau To Budapest / Classic Danube featuring a 7

The Mozart & Strauss Concert with the Vienna Residence Orchestra in the evening was possibly the most popular optional excursion in Vienna.

We have found with other Viking itineraries the concerts are often a highlight of the cruise. We still talk about attending the ballet in St Petersberg and the orchestra evening in Moscow.

An evening of Mozart & Strauss in Vienna is one of those must-do experiences you will never forget.

Enjoy A Special Tauck Visit To Budapest’s Opulent Hungarian State Opera House

One of them is the Hungarian State Opera House, commissioned by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph and opened in 1884 its imposing façade is adorned with statues of great composers like Beethoven, Verdi and Mozart, and Hungarian favorite sons Ferenc Erkel and Franz Liszt greet you at the main entrance. The Emperor himself only attended one event here, but the imprint of his wife, the Empress Elisabeth , a great patron of the arts and of the opera in particular, is all over the place from the general grandeur of its interiors to the private box in which she attended many performances. If you love opera, this is the place to hear it, enjoying some of the best acoustics in Europe. But even if you don’t, its sheer opulence makes it a must-see.

Budapest Cruise At Night

One of the most spectacular events on the Viking Waltz cruise was the night sailing in Budapest. This Budapest river cruise event took place on the last night and was simply gorgeous. The Budapest Danube cruise portion was a slow journey under numerous bridges and included seeing the most spectacular portions of the city at night. To see the city lit up and sail through town was the perfect way to end this experience.
