Icon Of The Seas Played A Role In Cococay’s New Area

Royal Caribbean reenvisioned the idea of a cruise line private island when it redid CocoCay under the Perfect Day Banner in 2019. The cruise line added a massive pool as well as an added-fee Beach Club and waterpark while keeping plenty of areas tranquil and pristine. The cruise had shared plans for a new, adults-only section of the island, Hideaway Beach, but hadn’t given many details.

“When Icon arrives, the cruise line will debut the islands adults-only oasis, Hideaway Beach, with an expansive pool, private cabanas with pools, and unmatched views of the ocean hues,” the company shared in a press release.

Bayley commented a little further, giving some added details as to how the new area would work and the impact it might have on CocoCay. He made it clear that the new area was built somewhat as an extension of two new neighborhoods that will be on Icon of the Seas–Cloud 17 and the Hideaway.

“We have two unique spaces on Icon, one of them called Hideaway, and one of them called Cloud 17. Hideaway is this incredible space about 135 feet up in the air with an incredible infinity pool, great bar experience, unlimited sunshine, it’s kind of an epic experience,” Bayley said. “Cloud 17 is adults only. It’s exclusive. It’s dedicated to adults only.”

Icon of the Seas will be sailing from Miami and stopping at CocoCay. That was very much factored into plans for Hideaway Beach.

Carnival Unveils A Surprise Answer To Royal Caribbean’s Cococay

CocoCay, Bahamas
  • Publish date: May 13, 2022 11:10 AM EDT

You can’t watch television without seeing ads for Royal Caribbean – Get Free Report. The cruise line has been one of the top travel brands on TV. Many of those ads feature images from CocoCay, the company’s reimagined private island in the Bahamas.

The island has completely changed the cruise-line-owned destination game. Whereas private islands have generally been beaches that offer lunch, drinks, and maybe a gift shop, CocoCay offers multiple beaches, the largest pool in the Caribbean, and multiple food options, all for free.

If you want more than that, Royal Caribbean’s private island, which can accommodate two Oasis-class ships at the same time, offers an added-fee water park and beach club.

The company is also building a new area on CocaCay, Hideaway Beach, an adults-only section of the island that may or may not cost extra .

CocoCay has given Royal Caribbean a major edge over rivals Carnival Cruise Lines – Get Free Report and Norwegian Cruise Lines – Get Free Report. Both of those companies offer more traditional Caribbean private islands — essentially just beaches.

Royal Caribbean has an edge because CocoCay has more appeal to families and offers differentiated experiences. You can simply relax on the beach — just like on the Carnival or Norwegian private islands — or you can opt for the pool , or you can opt for the upgraded water park or beach club experience.

Cococay Island Refurbishments 2015

CocoCay was refurbished and expanded in the years 2015, 2016, 2017-2018, and in 2018-2019. With each project completed, to the island were added new venues, amenities and services, and many of the existing ones were redesigned, expanded and upgraded.

In mid-March 2018 was announced the private island renovation project which was completed in phases . The official opening was on May 4, 2019 and full completion in December 2019 .

For season 2020, RCI estimated that the island will be visited by 2+ million cruise tourists. RCI also considers the option for 3-ship calls per day, thus increasing the island’s max daily passenger capacity from 6,000 to 10,000 and even 12,000 .

Is It Worth It To Rent A Cabana

If you can afford it, a cabana rental is a great way to splurge during your day.

Cabanas offer privacy, shade, fantastic waiter service, and a “home base” for your family during your day. Your cabana attendant will bring you complimentary food throughout the day, as well as take drink orders.

Of course, cabanas have an extra cost and they are not cheap. Not to mention you may feel a sense of obligation to stay in the cabana to “get your money’s worth”.

The reason to book a cabana is for the privacy and service it provides. There is plenty of umbrellas and shade around the island, so don’t worry about that.

The more people you have, the more compelling a cabana is to book. If you have 6-8 guests, the price per person makes the choice far more reasonable. If you can split the cost between two families, then you really have a great value.

Royal Caribbean Expands Perfect Day At Cococay

For decades cruise lines did things the same way when it came to their private island destinations. A private island meant a beach with chairs, maybe a kids’ play area, a barbecue-style meal, bars, and not much else.

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay changed that. The reimagined island has multiple beaches, a gigantic pool , an added-fee waterpark with multiple slides and a wave pool, an extra-cost high-end beach club, as well as ziplines and a tethered hot air balloon that the company sells tickets for.

CocoCay has a lot you can do for free — dramatically more than the sparse private islands offered by Carnival and Norwegain Cruise Line – Get Free Report — but it also has a lot of other experiences. Without the added fee experiences, Royal Caribbeaan has the best private island due to its multiple beaches and the huge pool, but the total package gives the company a major advantage over its two chief rivals.

The company has decided to lean into that advantage with an upcoming expansion of the private island.

“On the destination front, we continue to make progress on the expansion of perfect day at CocoCay with the addition of Hideaway Beach. Hideaway Beach will make perfect day at CocoCay even more perfect with an entirely new experience expanding capacity to the island,” CEO Jason Liberty shared during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

Free Lunch: Skippers Grill

We made it to noon without swiping my cruise card and lunch on CocoCay was on the house. Yeah, you can pay for wings at Captain Jacks bar, but Skippers Grill was closer, had a larger menu and was free.

The beach barbecue has burgers, dogs and chicken, but it doesnt stop there. I grabbed a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich and a tomato-and-cucumber salad from the sandwich and salad station, and passed a taco bar on my way to pick up fruit and dessert. The drinks stations dispense free juice and water, plus soft-serve ice cream.

Just watch out for seagulls who stare you down as you eat, making my daughter a bit uneasy. However, Id like to see the seagull who dares to steal her gooey brownie it will likely rue the day it dared to cross her path.

Depending on where you are on the island, you have your choice of two barbecue venues and three Snack Shack venues, all complimentary.

Got Kids Don’t Miss The Free Slides

It is easy to gravitate towards Thrill Waterpark, but Royal Caribbean provides two water splash areas for kids that costs absolutely nothing extra.

Captain Jill’s Galleon and Splashaway Bay are located immediately at the entrance to the island from the pier.

If you have younger kids , you may find these areas a great fit for kids, with seating around both areas for adults to supervise.

Both of the splash zones include small slides, water cannons, geysers and more.

Children up to 42 and 200lbs are able to use these areas.

Given there is no cost to go here, and many of the slides in the waterpark have height requirements, families with younger children may prefer Splashaway Bay and Captain Jill’s Galleon.
