Have you ever thought about taking a vacation with 7,000 of your closest friends? In just a few years, youll be able to. At that time, the worlds largest cruise ship will set sail, hosting a record number of guests.

MSC Cruises recently announced their order of two mega-ships. One will debut in 2022, and the other in 2024. MSC Cruises World Class cruise ships will feature 2,760 cabins and a maximum occupancy of 6,850 guests, the highest passenger capacity in the global cruise fleet, according to a press release. And the ship will be a whopping 330 meters long. Conde Nast Traveler calculates that this is almost as long as three football fields, and that it will hold about a hundred more guests than the leading cruise ships.

The ships will, of course, be outfitted with all of the latest cruise luxuries, which their customers expect. A different MSC ship, just unveiled this summer, includes amenities like an indoor promenade, water slides, a bowling alley and even a flight simulator, according to USA Today.

According to the cruise line, the look of the new World Class ships will be different than other cruise ships youve boarded. The World Class futuristic Y shape structure will enable panoramic sea views and increase the proportion of balcony cabins, they wrote.

From Luxury Ocean Liners To Megaship Cruising

World’s largest cruise ship docks at Port Canaveral

With the advent of large passenger jet aircraft in the 1960s, intercontinental travelers switched from ships to planes sending the ocean liner trade into a terminal decline. Certain characteristics of older ocean liners made them unsuitable for cruising duties, such as high fuel consumption, deep draught preventing them from entering shallow ports, and cabins designed to maximize passenger numbers rather than comfort.

Queen Elizabeth 2

Ocean liner services aimed at passengers ceased in 1986, with the notable exception of transatlantic crossings operated by the British shipping company Cunard Line, catering to a niche market of those who appreciated the several days at sea. In an attempt to shift the focus of the market from passenger travel to cruising with entertainment value, Cunard Line pioneered the luxury cruise transatlantic service on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner. International celebrities were hired to perform cabaret acts onboard and the crossing was advertised as a vacation in itself.

Sovereign of the Seas

Until 19751980, cruises offered shuffleboard, deck chairs, drinks with umbrellas and little else for a few hundred passengers. After 1980, they offered increasing amenities. As of 2010, city-sized ships have dozens of amenities.

Royal Caribbean’s Wonder Of The Seas The World’s Largest Cruise Ship Is Ideal For A Nervous First

I’ve always been a go-big-or-go-home type of person, so taking the maiden voyage on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, in April was an absolute must. Funny thing is, I’d never been a cruise person, despite having never been on one that is, until this Caribbean sailing.

The trip was scheduled for late March 2020, so needless to say, it was put on ice as the COVID-19 pandemic halted the industry. But fast-forward almost exactly two years later, I decided to give it a go again on Royal Caribbean’s new 1,188-foot-long ship.

It turns out, the things I initially thought I disliked about cruising are what I enjoyed most during the seven-day journey that sailed from Fort Lauderdale to Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.

Perhaps the result of my travel being paused for nearly two years, but coordinating a trip itinerary felt overwhelming. On Wonder of the Seas, however, all of that was taken care of to an extent.

Before embarkation everyone was encouraged to download the Royal Caribbean app, which essentially became my social lifeline. It had everything laid out, from activities to the calendar to a breakdown of the dining room’s rotating menus.

I have a notoriously horrible sense of direction, so navigating not just a ship, but the world’s largest, was challenging on the first day. That said, the spaciousness meant I didn’t have to feel overwhelmed.

Cruise ships are large passenger ships used mainly for vacationing. Unlike ocean liners, which are used for transport, they typically embark on round-trip voyages to various ports-of-call, where passengers may go on tours known as “shore excursions”. They can carry thousands of passengers in a single trip, and are some of the largest ships in the world by gross tonnage , bigger than many cargo ships. In the decades since, the size of the largest vessels has more than doubled. There have been nine or more new cruise ships added every year since 2001, most of which are 100,000 GT or greater. In the two decades between 1988 and 2009, the largest cruise ships grew a third longer , almost doubled their widths , doubled the total passengers , and tripled in volume .
