Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series 2022 review: 70th Anniversary LC79 single cab ute off-road test!

The Toyota Land Cruiser has grown with every generation and has rightly earned the nickname Land Crusher. But the new generation 2022 Land Cruiser 300 has lost some of its weight.

With a new TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, the new Toyota land cruiser 2022 SUV will be about 440 pounds lighter than its predecessor and it is one of the best 8 Passengers SUV.

Toyota says the weight loss and the new 10-speed transmission will improve efficiency by about 10 percent.

As expected, the earlier part of the best V8 vehicles, the Toyota Land Cruiser replaces its V8 engine with V6 twin-turbo engines paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

When The Going Gets Tough Start The Land Cruiser

For most of its history, the Toyota Land Cruiser has never really been just one vehicle, with the nameplate instead being applied to several off-roaders targeted at different users. Years after the original rugged 40 Series was launched, the Land Cruiser line split in two. The 55 Series was released featuring improved amenities and comfort to better cater to family buyers.

The 1980s saw the 70 Series take on the workhorse role of the 40 Series that came before. As the 55 Series gave way to future comfort-oriented generationsleading to the 300 Series of todaythe 70 Series stuck around and has been with us here in Australia ever since.

Comfort-oriented Land Cruisers have ballooned in size and weight over the years, adding equipment and improving refinement. Meanwhile, the 70 Series really hasn’t. Instead, its stuck to its guns as a rugged machine for handling tough conditions, with few to no concessions to trivialities like noise, vibration, and harshness.

Updates over the years have largely been limited to complying with new regulations, with airbags, stability control, and ABS notable inclusions on modern examples. Safety and emissions laws come for all vehicles sooner or later.

Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series Review: If A 38

In a world where the only constant is change, the 70 Series stays the same.

The automotive world is a place where change is a constant. Market demands and the pressures of competition conspire to keep automakers on the hedonic treadmill, always striving for more. It’s a process that has led to the cars of today, filled to bursting with features, equipment, and luxuries. The 2022 Land Cruiser 70 Series, however, bucks this trend.

Over the years, it has stayed true to its original ethos and purpose, skipping the fad of tacking on trinkets and baubles model year after model year. It’s stuck around because it works so well, not in spite of its simplicity but because of it.

Toyota Land Cruiser Overview

While the 300-series LandCruiser is new from the ground up, much of the design has remained unchanged. Important markings such as length, width, height, and wheelbase were adopted from the 200-series LandCruiser.

Like all the new things underneath the new sheet metal, the interior of the new LandCruiser has also been completely redesigned.

But here too there is more than just a few familiarities. The interior is quite similar overall, with a length of almost 5m that provides plenty of space in the first and second rows.

You also get LED headlights, keyless entry, and start, two-zone climate control, and a rear-view camera. Plus, it has a touchscreen thats a third larger , as well as smartphone integration, an electric parking brake, and one-touch window lifters throughout.

The Forbidden Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Is Sold Out With A Two Year Waitlist

2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Debuts With New Design & V6 Engine Hype Garage

Yes, Toyota still produces this legendary off-roader, nearly four decades after its introduction.

The Tundra. Tacoma. Sequoia. We have some pretty awesome Toyota pickups and SUVs offered here in the States. What we don’t have is the Land Cruiser 70 Seriesand it’s quite a shame we never didbut no market gets that one anymore, right? We’re talking about the J70, the one that came out in 1984 to replace the 40 Series, the one that’s over three decades old. Certainly, a vehicle that old-school cool was axed in all markets. Well, nope. In fact, it’s so popular, there’s now a two-year waitlist.

The Land Cruiser 70 still lives as a brand-new Toyota vehicle in some markets, making it rank among the oldest vehicles still on sale currently. And it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. In the Australia market, Toyota is still updating the ultra-rad off-roader, investing money to make it compliant with side-impact crash regulations. More safety and payload upgrades are set to arrive in November 2022: a pre-collision safety system , and an approximate 200-pound increase in GVM to more than 7,700 pounds . Like The Little Engine That Could, it’s the indestructible little off-roader that could.

Toyota is hopeful it can pick up the pace of production, but dang. That’s Rivian-level wait time. On the bright side, you’d have your Series 70 in time for its 40th anniversary in 2024, and that’s a little nostalgicor something.

Does Toyota Sell A Land Cruiser In The United States

Recently, Toyota decided to stop selling the Land Cruiser here in the States. This has forced folks who want a capable SUV with modern luxury to look to Lexus. While it is quite the bummer, the Land Cruiser has consistently been in last place in terms of sales. Not a lot of folks seemed to want to pay such a premium for a Toyota. But for those that did, the level of stealth wealth was unmatched.

Plus, with the Land Cruiser, you get an off-road SUV that is ready to pack on the miles. It is not surprising to see one of these vehicles with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock. And that is something that a certain group of buyers appreciate. Even older Land Cruiser models command a premium because they have a reputation for reliability over an extended period of time.

Toyota Land Cruiser Safety Rating & Features

The Land Cruiser has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety .

With the LandCruiser of this generation with autonomous emergency braking for pedestrians and cyclists , safety inclusions take a big step forward.

This system includes a turn assistant at intersections, but the emergency steering assistant is only available from VX.

Just arrived 2022 Land Cruiser 70series pickup with price

In terms of pricing, the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 has a cost of $67,400 AUD, or $43,336 USD. This SUV is available in a variety of trim levels and configurations. So, pricing does vary throughout the lineup. But, generally speaking, it does feel pretty affordable for an old-school truck. Especially one that is designed to be such a workhorse.

Unfortunately, you will not find a new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series for sale in the United States. Because this vehicle is nearing 40 years old, it does not meet regulations in the States. Plus, its unlikely that this old-school SUV would be that popular. It is extremely basic and void of modern comfort. The fact that it has air conditioning is even a selling point for Toyota.

Tundra Borrows Land Cruisers Underpinnings

For 2022, Toyota extensively redesigned the Tundras chassis, based on the Land Cruisers. The designers sought to add stability and towing capacity without tipping the scale too far, using a combination of high-strength steel and aluminum. It also dropped in various new structural supports and redesigned existing ones.

Since the truck would get an all-new chassis, it would also need an all-new suspension. So Toyota onboarded coil springs from the Land Cruiser for all four feet, ditching the previous generations leaf systems.

The rear setup is multi-link, engineered to improve stability and handling dynamics, as well as add grunt for towing. Towing capacity is up to 12,000 pounds , and payload maxes out at 1,940 pounds .

The update enabled Toyota engineers to make changes like moving the shock absorbers outside the frame rails. Overall, the update should reduce body roll and improve handling and straight-line stability.

Up front, the Tundra borrows the Land Cruisers double-wishbone setup for added ride comfort and durability.

According to the brand, the update improves cornering by lowering roll steer by 25% over the previous benchmark and elevates the roll height center by roughly 2 inches to reduce body roll. An upsized castor trail adds stability.

The stated fuel economy for the V6 Biturbo is 23.7 mpg based on the leak. Potential EPA numbers may be tighter, and its unclear if that was the combined mpg or the maximum number on the highway,

But lets face it, any Land Cruiser mpg rating with a 2 upfront would be a leap forward. The new Cruiser also has a GR Edition button, though that may not indicate a powertrain upgrade.

Pros:
  • Promises to remain, king of the mountain,
  • Improved on-road capabilities
  • Huge upgrade in cabin and safety tech
Cons:
  • Full safety suite should be all rims
  • Missing that V8 diesel engine

2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Debuts With New Design & V6 Engine Hype Garage

An all-new Land Cruiser finally debuts, but well only be getting the Lexus version.

One of the best-known vehicles in the world is getting a long-awaited replacement with the debut of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser. Unfortunately for Americans, we won’t be getting it.

The new model, known internally and to Land Cruiser enthusiasts as the 300 Series, is a melding of the tried-and-true 200 Series that’s been around since 2007 and the GA-F derivative of Toyota’s newer TNGA platform. Although it’s still a body-on-frame truck-based vehicle, the Land Cruiser’s frame has been redesigned in an effort to reduce weight and increase rigidity. Toyota claims the 2022 Land Cruiser is 441 pounds lighter than the old model, which we weighed at 5,774 pounds in five-seat configuration and 5,874 pounds in standard seven-seat configuration. Toyota claims to have also lowered the center of gravity and improved the weight distribution, although its reported 53/47 percent weight distribution matches that of the last 200 Series Land Cruiser we tested.

Also assisting off-road are a pair of electronic aides: Multi-Terrain Monitor and Multi-Terrain Select. The former is a camera system that allows the driver to see obstacles that may be obscured by the hood or other parts of the vehicle. The latter automatically changes the drive mode based on the terrain rather than requiring the driver to do it manually.
