Cruise Lines To Sail From Florida With More Than 12 Ships In 2 Months But Port Canaveral Getting Late Start

Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Orlando Sentinel.

Business isnt booming yet for cruise lines out of Florida, but its not dead silent either like it has been for the last 15 months.

This past Saturday marked a milestone in the cruise industry as Celebrity Edge sailed from Port Everglades to mark the first revenue sailing of any major cruise line from a U.S. port since March 2020.

Its the first domino of a lineup set to follow suit in the next two months out of the states big three embarkation points PortMiami, Port Canaveral and Port Everglades as at least another dozen vessels from the likes of Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and possibly Disney Cruise Line get underway.

The early action, though is mainly from South Florida while Port Canaverals first revenue sailing isnt until July 31 when Carnivals new ship Mardi Gras is set to debut.

The children are an issue, said Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray at a port commission meeting Wednesday. Were a family port and thats one of the reasons were probably starting a little bit later than the other ports, because we are so family-oriented. Its going to be very difficult for some of our brands here to operate under a fully vaccinated ship.

When asked how Carnival intends to handle Floridas new law, a spokesperson did not comment on the decision to break from the law and instead referred NBC News to its frequently-asked-questions page, which states that guests will be asked to confirm their status as fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and provide proof of vaccination in advance of boarding, unless a vaccination exemption is given in advance.

Norwegian, which requires guests to bring proof of vaccination, responded to inquiries with a link to its latest press release from early June about its upcoming U.S. voyages.

Democrats have denounced the new law and accused DeSantis of undermining both public health and the cruise industry.

“The governor is dictatorially imposing his will on Florida businesses trying to protect their customers, including cruise lines on whom our agriculture industry depends for millions in food sales,” Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried said in a statement to NBC News.

Fried, a Democrat, is running to unseat DeSantis in next years election.

Pushaw said the governors executive order is not likely to scare away seagoing travelers.

Its almost unheard of for a vaccinated person to get seriously ill with Covid-19, she said in an email. Therefore, people who are vaccinated should not be worried about getting infected from those who arent.

Prior to the pandemic, the industry directly and indirectly supported nearly 160,000 jobs in Florida.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship to Become the Largest Ship ...

Under the CDC guidelines, each practice cruise will run two to seven days and must have enough passengers to meet at least 10% of the ship’s capacity. Volunteers must be 18 or older and either fully vaccinated or free of medical conditions that would put them at high risk for severe COVID-19.

The ship operator must tell passengers that they are simulating untested safety measures “and that sailing during a pandemic is an inherently risky activity, the CDC guidelines state.

Passengers must be examined for COVID-19 symptoms before and after the trip, and at least 75% must be tested at the end.

Ships must make at least one practice run before resuming regular cruises in U.S. waters, although operators will be able to avoid the requirement if they vouch that 98% of crew and 95% of passengers are vaccinated, the CDC said.

Cruise lines have been barred from sailing in U.S. waters or stopping at U.S. ports since March 2020, early in the pandemic.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is suing the federal government over the CDC’s no-sail order. The suit is in mediation and expected to be settled next month.

This approval is a milestone for our hard-fought efforts to safely re-open the cruising industry, which is a cornerstone of Miami-Dades economy generating $7 billion a year and supporting an estimated 40,000 jobs throughout multiple sectors of the economy,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.

Fun Activities To Do This Fall In South Florida

This is it. Vacationers can finally plan to take their precious time off this summer and truly get away after what has been a challenging time for everyone,” Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley said in a statement. “Thanks in large part to the successful rollout of vaccines, the world of adventure is beginning to open up, and we are all excited to start delivering great vacations to our guests, who have increasingly told us they are getting vaccinated.”

All Royal Caribbean crew members will be vaccinated against COVID-19, and the company said guests are strongly recommended to be fully vaccinated. Guests who aren’t vaccinated or are unable to verify that they are vaccinated will have to undergo testing and follow other protocols that will be “announced at a later date,” the company said.

Royal Caribbean said 90% of vacationers booking with them are either vaccinated or planning to get vaccinated in time for their cruise.

The federal government shut down all cruises in March of 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, the state of Florida filed a lawsuit against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over its no-sail order.

Florida is the nations cruise capital with three of the worlds busiest ports: Miami, Port Canaveral near Kennedy Space Center, and Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale. The cruise industry generates billions for the economy and employs tens of thousands of Floridians.

Can I Get On A Cruise In Miami Without Being Vaccinated

Originally, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International have had restrictions for those who havent received their vaccines yet. Both would allow unvaccinated guests with proper precautions.

Now, Royal Caribbean will require proof of vaccination from guests 16 and olderexcept in ships leaving from Florida ports.

Since Floridas governor banned the concept of vaccine passports, this requirement doesnt extend to those Royal Caribbean ships leaving from Florida Ports.

Instead, cruises leaving from Florida are running safety simulations to ensure their protocols are effective. Once the CDC approves a simulation, we can feel confident and protected about boarding.

Disney just had a two-night simulation at the end of June, and well keep you updated on what this means.

Norwegian Cruise Line has taken a more stringent approach by not allowing any unvaccinated passengerspromising to sail with fully vaccinated guests and crew through October.
