BALTIMORE

One industry devastated by the pandemic is starting to see signs of life again. A new wave of business is back for cruises in the mid-Atlantic. The first ship set sail Sunday from the Port of Baltimore.

A sound greeting from the Port of Baltimore. Masked guests and staff of Sunday’s Carnival Pride cruise cut to a long-awaited renaissance.

“Oh, we’re ready to roll. We’re excited it’s a vacation. But apprehensive too,” said cruisers Willie and Jan Horn, of Westerville, Ohio.

This time, the seven-day cruise to the Bahamas has another idea of paradise in mind. Vaccines and negative tests needed before boarding. Masks for guests required indoors while onboard. The cruise line says all necessary and rigorous steps before guests can relax.

“Hundreds of millions of government officials. We worked closely with the CDC and it really worked out well bringing you to this day,” said William Doyle, executive director of the Port of Baltimore.

The cruise officials say there are other protocols onboard, including quarantine and contact tracing in case guests test positive. All 100% of the vaccinated staff will serve 1,500 guests — 70% of the ship’s normal limit.

“We have constrained capacity so over the next few ceilings that will continue to increase,” said Carnival Cruises President Stephanie Duffy.

Guests taking the step and a risk.

“With a lot more fun involved,” said Jan Horn.

First Cruise Leaves The Port Of Baltimore This Weekend After 18

The Carnival Pride will sail from Baltimore Sunday on a seven-day trip to the Bahamas, the first ship to carry passengers from the state-owned ports cruise terminal in 18 months because of the pandemic.

The voyage, which requires both COVID-19 vaccines and tests for all passengers, marks a return to the Cruise Maryland terminal in Locust Point for the first time since the Royal Caribbeans Grandeur of the Seas arrived back at a closed terminal due to COVID-19 restrictions in March 2020.

Carnival and port officials will greet the departing passengers with a celebratory ribbon cutting. But the cruise leaves amid a still-raging delta variant that has prompted the federal government to issue new guidance on testing before cruises.

Doyle said the Prides return will be a great day for the Port of Baltimore, which boasts a location directly off Interstate 95, only 15 minutes from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, and near plenty of the citys tourism and dining attractions.

Passengers Boarded The First Cruise Ship To Leave From Baltimore Since The Pandemic Began Heres How It Went

Sunday, for the first time in 18 months, cruise ship passengers flocked to the Port of Baltimore, and as a steel drummer played in the terminal, they boarded the Carnival Pride, bound for the Bahamas.

Nancy Houchens, a longtime cruiser who has traveled on 118 Carnival voyages, cut the ribbon so boarding could begin Sunday morning, a pair of large blue scissors in hand.

Ill probably cry, she said.

Houchens, 70, of North Garden, Virginia, said she was excited to see the crew aboard the ship, and give them a bag of candy to thank them one of her favorite cruising traditions.

The Pride, which is operating at 70% capacity, is Carnivals ninth ship to welcome passengers back since the coronavirus pandemic halted cruise operations in March 2020, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. And Sundays weeklong voyage comes with a host of health and safety restrictions for guests.

All passengers were required to be fully vaccinated, with a limited number of exceptions for children under 12, who cant be vaccinated yet, and people with documented medical conditions. Less than 5% of the roughly 1,500 passengers aboard the ship are unvaccinated for those reasons, Duffy said.

All passengers were also required to obtain a negative antigen or PCR test within three days of boarding.

I dont like it, but if thats what it takes for me to cruise, then Im OK with it, Ford said.

Baltimore Will Reopen Cruise Port On Saturday

We have another positive sign the U.S. cruise industry is moving towards re-opening.

As a result of widespread vaccination efforts and;subsequent declines in key health metrics, Governor Hogan believes the time is right for restrictions to be lifted.

Along with many other venues, Maryland is moving to removing capacity restrictions on venues such as;outdoor entertainment, art and sports venues as well as indoor entertainment and convention venues.

On Saturday, the Port of Baltimore will reopen its cruise terminal.

Here in Maryland, our plan is to get everything back to normal by Memorial Day, said Governor Hogan. We are making amazing progress toward that goal. But once again, the fastest way to get rid of our damn masks and to put this pandemic behind us once and for all is for every single eligible Marylander to get vaccinated as quickly as possible.

Following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention providing cruise lines with new test sailing requirements,;Executive Director of the Maryland Port Administration William Doyle said he will be working towards a restart of cruises, “the port is a good starting point for the cruise ship industry because the ships that visit Baltimore are a little smaller.”

“The MPA will continue working closely with the CDC to get cruising restarted.”

Are Health Experts Concerned About Cruises Resuming

Christopher Thompson is uncomfortable with the idea of out-of-town cruise passengers descending on Baltimore, eating at its restaurants and staying in its hotels while the ultra-contagious delta variant circulates in the city and around the country.

Police car stolen, suspect jumps in harbor during chase across South Baltimore, officials say »

Thompson, an immunology and microbiology professor at Loyola University Maryland, said requiring vaccinations and tests before boarding the ship is a good step. But he warned that the effects of vaccination are waning with each new variant, and negative tests are only about 80% accurate.

Theyre the right things to do if youre going to move forward with this, he said. But its still scary to me.

Thompson suggested increasing the testing requirement to two tests, 36 hours apart, which would provide a higher level of certainty that all passengers are COVID-free, he said. The cruise lines should encourage masking and offer testing at sea, he suggested.

Maybe even in the middle of the cruise would be prudent, he said.

About The Port Of Baltimore

For those that dont know, the Port of Baltimore has a 300-plus year history. Then known as Whetstone Point, the location was designated as an official Port of Entry in 1706. Combined with five smaller nearby ports, it eventually became the Port of Baltimore and now covers 45 square miles of shoreline.

The cruise terminal is designated as South Locust Point, located not too far away from Baltimores well-known Inner Harbor area, a short drive off I-95, and a 10-minute ride away from BWI Airport. The facility is a converted 65,000 square foot warehouse, which provides paved parking and dredging for larger cruise ships.

A mid-Atlantic seaboard location within driving distance of a major airport makes Baltimore an excellent departure point for a cruise. But, what if you are coming from out of the area? In this case, the Baltimore area has several hotels scattered about, in the city and greater metropolitan area and as far away as Annapolis. Bed-and-breakfasts, independent hotels, and chains all offer a comfortable place to sleep for the night, often with breakfast accommodations in the morning, before you set sail on your cruise. Larger chains, additionally, may offer parking accommodations for your trip or possibly provide shuttle service to the cruise terminal. Inquire, first, as you plan your trip.
