Emily Blunt Plays Lily Houghton
Who is Lily? Idealistic, brave and eccentric scientist Lily is in search of the Tree of Life flower, intending to study its unparalleled healing qualities that could change medicine forever. She enlists Franks help for safe passage through the Amazon, where the unlikely duo encounter far more than just jungle critters
Where have I seen Emily Blunt before? After her breakthrough role in sharp comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada, Bunt has gone from strength to strength with roles in period piece The Young Victoria, sci-fi actioner The Edge of Tomorrow and musical Into The Woods. Most recently she has appeared as the title character in Mary Poppins Returns, and was directed by husband John Krasinski in A Quiet Place Part II.
How The Jungle Cruise Ride Portrayed Indigenous Characters
In the Jungle Cruise theme park attraction, Indigenous peoples appeared as headhunting tribesmen with spears in their handsnext to piles of human skullswho guides warned were attacking passing boats. One character in particular who was portrayed as primitive and dangerous was Trader Sam, who carried shrunken heads and was known as the head salesman. He has a great special for you all today: just two of his heads for one of yours, a skipper would joke to tourists on the ride. Trader Sam was also referred to as a chef who opened a cannibalistic cafe. Another area of the jungle showed a trapped safari scene, where men were chased up a tree by surrounding animals, with a white explorer at the top of the trunk and dark-skinned native guides at the bottom, next to the horn of a rhinoceros.
In Disneys recent refurbishment of the Jungle Cruise ride, these racist and stereotypical features were removed. The headhunting tribe is gone, Trader Sam is replaced with Trader Sams gift shop that includes a lost and found, and the trapped safari scene now features adventurers of varied racial backgrounds grabbing onto the tree. The changes were made at the theme park in Anaheim, and Disney has said the updates will be completed by this summer at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

New Movies + Shows To Watch This Weekend: ‘jungle Cruise’ On Disney+ & More
is shipping off into the world in just a few hours, which means the world is very, very close to a movie in which Jesse Plemons argues with a bee. As you might expect, which is coming to theaters and to Disney Plus Premier Access this Fridayis utter nonsense, but like, in a fun way. This is a movie in which Dwayne The Rock Johnson dresses like Humphrey Bogart from The African Queen and fights a CGI leopard with his bare hands.
Based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, stars Emily Blunt as a scientist on a mission to track down the Tree of Life, one petal of whichlegend has itwill cure all diseases. What Was The Controversy About Jack Whitehalls Casting
Following the announcement of Jack Whitehalls casting, there was a social media backlash, with arguments that a heterosexual actor shouldnt have been cast as one of Disneys first openly gay characters.
Really #JungleCruise ? Your first significant gay role will be played by a straight white man perpetuating stereotypes? Fail! This ship should sink.
Omar Sharif Jr.
If Scarlett Johansson wasnt allowed to play a trans man then Jack Whitehall shouldnt be allowed to play a gay man. Especially so when you consider there are absolute hundreds of out gay men in Hollywood who are better actors than him, journalist Sophie Wilkinson posted on Twitter.
However, others argued that there are plenty of gay actors who play straight roles, and that the whole point of acting is that its transformative.
Shock as actor is asked to play someone different from themselves. Isnt that kind of the point? Wouldnt always casting gay actors in gay roles be condemned for typecasting?
Wes Streeting MP
For his part, Whitehall has said that he didnt know the character was gay when he first auditioned, but he said he was proud of the coming out scene.

Who Stars In It
Johnson plays wisecracking skipper Wolff, while Blunt plays intrepid researcher Dr Houghton.
Emily Blunt said she and Jungle Cruise co-star Dwayne The Rock Johnson started laughing the moment we met when the actors appeared on stage together at Disneys D23 convention to unveil Jungle Cruise in 2019.
Speaking backstage, Blunt said the pair struck up a friendship immediately, telling the PA news agency: We started laughing the moment we met. I was like, this is going to be awesome. I knew it would be fun.
Also on the cast is British comedian and actor Jack Whitehall who plays MacGregor, the younger brother of Blunts adventurer.
Speaking at the Jungle Cruise world premiere at Disneyland in California, Whitehall told the PA news agency that inspiration for the upper class English gentleman MacGregor came from his father Michael, a TV producer who he starred alongside in the Netflix comedy, Travels With My Father.
My character is MacGregor, he is a sort of well-heeled, upper class English gentleman who doesnt really want to be there, looks down his nose a bit at the rustic accommodation, very well dressed, dry sense of humour,” he said.
Hes basically like my dad, thats slightly who it was modelled on.
Whitehall said he is yet to tell his father but believes he will recognise the portrayal when he sees Jungle Cruise, adding: I think he will appreciate the dress, hell appreciate the sartorial splendour of MacGregor if nothing else.

Dwayne Johnson as Frank and Emily Blunt as Lily in Jungle Cruise.Frank Masi
Jungle Cruise, the highly anticipated movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, is the latest film from Walt Disney Pictures coming straight to Disney Plus.
The movie premieres on Friday, July 30, about 21 months after its intended release date.
As with Soul, Mulan, and Hamilton, this is another instance of a Disney film release right to the small screen. Jungle Cruise will still premiere in theaters, and it also will be released to Disney Plus on the same day.
A premium subscription fee is required to access it on Disney Plus, though. This has become a source of confusion for many of those interested in seeing the film.
Heres what you need to know to watch Jungle Cruise when it becomes available.
How Much Does Disney Plus Cost
In the US, the Disney Plus service costs $8 a month, or $80 a year. The standalone Disney Plus service costs comparable amounts in other countries in their local currencies.
Disney Plus US price deeply undercuts the $14 monthly fee for Netflixs most popular plan in the US, which lets you stream to two different devices simultaneously in high definition. But Disney Plus allows all subscribers to stream to four devices and access 4K content at no extra cost features Netflix charges $18 a month to unlock its premium tier.
Way back in 2017, Disneys then-CEO Bob Iger noted that Disney Plus pricing at launch would reflect the fact that it will have substantially less volume than prime competitor Netflix. As the months and years pass, Disney Plus is accumulating a bigger catalog of exclusives and originals. As that happens, its widely expected the company will continue pushing its price higher.

What Is Jungle Cruise The Origins Of Disneys Jungle Cruise Film
One of Disneylands opening attractions back in 1955 inspired in part by cinematic classic The African Queen the Jungle Cruise riverboat ride has been a beloved family favourite for generations now a seven-minute tramp-steamer journey through an artfully patchworked sampler of the worlds jungles, packed with animatronic perils and brought to life by the captains joke-filled ad-libbed narration. Naturally, Jungle Cruises popularity could not be contained fast forward 66 years and in 2021 day-tripping mouseketeers in Florida, Tokyo and Hong Kong can also take a Jungle Cruise into pulse-quickening peril and high adventure .
Inspired by the 1930s adventuring spirit of the riverboat ride Jungle Cruise the movie is a heart-warming family-friendly adventure in the classic mould, led by the effortlessly enjoyable pairing of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt . Now, we know what some of you are thinking: a film based on a theme park ride??? Has Disney completely run out of ideas? Not in the slightest. Ever heard of Pirates of the Caribbean? That, too, was inspired by a Disneyland attraction and, to date, the swashbuckling franchise has grossed over $4.5billion.
