What Does SEABOURN CRUISES Do Differently To Other Cruise Lines ?

Adding to the confusion: Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Carnival Cruise Line and nine other brands, is by far the worlds largest cruise ship company. Royal Caribbean Cruises which owns Royal Caribbean International is its closest runner up. They emphasize the worlds largest cruise ship.

How Did P& o Cruises Come Under Carnival

Well, P& O was another long-standing cruise line. P& O is definitely Carnivals oldest cruise line, formed in 1822. Founded as a shipping and logistics company, it started offering passenger services and luxury cruises as early as 1844, sailing from Southampton to the Mediterranean, and then on to even more exotic locations, such as Alexandria and Constantinople.

Over the course of its long life, the brand absorbed and acquired a number of other similar businesses, including Princess Cruises. Eventually, in 2000, P& O would form P& O Princess Cruises, and then that would be what Carnival would merge with in 2003, forming Carnival Corporation & plc.

At the time of that merger, Carnival Corporation also absorbed P& O Cruises, P& O Cruises Australia and AIDA Cruises. All told, this is the merger and acquisition that pushed Carnival Corporation into its status as the largest cruise company.

Today, Princess Cruises has more than a dozen cruise ships and three cruise ships in the works. P& O Cruises currently consists of six ships, with the P& O Iona and P& O Arvia set to debut soon. P& O Cruises Australia operates three ships, all of which were previously Princess Cruises ships and all of which are on the older side, with the newest dating back to 2002.

Trend #1: Big corporations are buying up smaller independent cruise lines

First of all, the big cruise corporations are slowly buying up the different independent cruise lines around the world. What theyre doing is theyre creating a big mass market value brand. They normally also have a smaller ship premium or luxury cruise line that can go to the more out-of-the-way, more unusual places. They also have an ultra-luxury brand which increasingly theyre using to go into expedition cruising.

Trend #2: Travel Corporations launching a Cruise Line under their name

    Purchase By Holland America Line

Holland America Line purchased 50% of Windstar Sail Cruises in 1987 and purchased the balance of the company in 1988. HAL became a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc in 1989. The option to continue building the Wind Surf and the Wind Saga was passed up by HAL. With assistance from the French Government these two larger ships were built for Club Med as Club Med I and Club Med II, with HAL / Carnival retaining rights of first refusal for purchase. A few years later, HAL / Carnival planned to buy Club Med I and Club Med II with permission. However, Windstar cruises was unable to purchase Club Med I and Club Med II and rename them to Wind Surf and the Wind Saga because they had only enough money to purchase one ship. So in 1998, Windstar acquired the sail cruiser Club Med I from Club Med Cruises, and rechristened her to her original name Wind Surf.

    # 3 Norwegian Cruise Line

The next big cruise corporation is the Norwegian Cruise Corporation. And Norwegian Cruise has three key brands at the time of recording.

The first is the most famous of all, of course, which is Norwegian Cruise Line. Norwegian Cruise Line became famous for creating freestyle cruising. Its the most relaxed, the most informal of all the cruise lines. This means you have a huge range of dining options, bar options, big glitzy entertainment, but its quite laid back. You can wear shorts for example to dinner on board Norwegian Cruise Line. So, its very popular for people looking for informal cruising with lots of bells and whistles.

They do then have an ultra-luxury and a luxury brand. On the luxury side they have Oceania. Thats their premium brand, with relatively small ships. They are especially well-known for their food. They claim to spend more per passenger than anybody else on food, and they have big glitzy and really impressive menus. And because they have smaller ships they can also go to the more out-of-the-way places.

On the ultra-luxury side, so competing with things like Seabourn and Silversea, they own Regent Seven Sea. Regent Seven Sea is very luxurious, and they are the most all-inclusive of the ultra-luxury brands It includes things like the excursions, Wi-Fi, gratuity, all those kinds of things, within their fare.

    • Acquisition Price: $15 million $10 million unknown amount
    • Acquisition Date: 1992 1995-1996 1998-1999

Seabourn Cruise Line was founded in 1988 with the launch of the 208-passenger Seabourn Pride. The idea for the cruise line originated two years earlier among a small group of luxury hospitality and cruising executives looking to reinvent luxury cruising. When the Seabourn Pride was first launched, it offered: spacious all-suite accommodations public spaces designed for relaxed socializing and a stern designed like a private beach resort. Just four years later in 1992, Carnival agreed to purchase a 50% stake in Seabourn via two separate ten-year loans of $15 million and $10 million. With the $15 million loan Carnival acquired an initial 25% stake in Seabourn. The second loan for $10 million secured an additional 25% stake in late 1995. In 1998, the company purchased the remaining 50% stake in Seabourn. At the same time, Carnival acquired Cunard Line Ltd. and combined it with Seabourn. Today, Seabourn operates a fleet of three 458-passenger and two 600-passenger ships offering an ultra-luxury cruising experience in over 400 destinations globally.
