Do I Need A Passport For A Cruise To / From San Juan Puerto Rico

San Juan Puerto Rico Is Our Favorite Cruise Port So Far! [Symphony of the Seas Vlog 6]

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and its residents are U.S. citizens. You do not need a passport if flying from the U.S. to Puerto Rico or vice versa. You only need a government issued photo ID, like a drivers license. If you are a U.S. citizen, and you board a cruise ship at a U.S. port , and travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship, you will most likely NOT need a passport unless you enter a foreign country as part of the cruise itinerary. A U.S. or Puerto Rico drivers license should suffice. For children under 16, a birth certificate is typically required. However, check with your cruise line to be absolutely sure what documentation is needed.

Perfect Port For Pre And Post Cruise Stays

There is no other port on earth that is better for a pre or post cruise stay than San Juan, Puerto Rico. On my last cruise out of San Juan , I opted for a pre and a post cruise stay so I could enjoy as much as the island as I possibly could.

From beachfront resorts to a mom and pop bed and breakfast in Old San Juan, its the perfect extension to your cruise.

Yes, cruise ships often spend the day in San Juan as part of their itinerary. However, there are some things in Puerto Rico that you can only take advantage of if you stay a few nights on the island.

If you really want to escape the busyness of everyday life, spend a few days on the island of Vieques before or after your cruise. Vieques is located just off the Eastern coast of Puerto Rico and is a short 30 minute flight from Isla Grande Airport . Another option is the ferry from Ceiba, especially since the fast ferry started operating two months ago.

Vieques is the hidden gem of the Caribbean. The island is almost known for what you cant find on it than what is on it. You wont find a single traffic light and commercialization is basically non-existent. OK, so there is one Subway on the island but that is it. In the day and age when just about every island has become a tourist trap with Margaritavilles, Senor Frogs, and jewelry stores promoted by cruise lines everywhere you go, Vieques is the polar opposite of that.

St Cruise Ship Docks In Puerto Rico Since Pandemic Began

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico The Carnival Mardi Gras docked Tuesday in Puerto Rico the first time a cruise ship has visited the U.S. territory since the pandemic began.

Some cautiously celebrated the arrival. It comes as Puerto Rico has reported an increase in COVID-19 cases blamed on the Delta variant but also as it seeks to restart its crucial tourism sector, which depended largely on record numbers of cruise ship passengers in recent years.

Carlos Mercado, executive director of Puerto Ricos Tourism Company, told The Associated Press that the government took several precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including allowing only those who are fully vaccinated to disembark.

He said the ship was traveling at 70% capacity, with some 4,500 people aboard, and that he estimates a total of 3,500 will disembark. Mercado noted that 95% of the ships passengers are vaccinated, with children younger than 12 making up the majority of those who have not been inoculated.

The visit was expected to generate some $360,000 during the nine hours that the ship is docked in the historic part of Puerto Ricos capital known as Old San Juan.

Passenger Tom Seuberling, of Oak Hill, Florida, said he was impressed by the health protocols aboard the ship.
