Germany River Cruises Travel Tips

  • Always make sure to play by the rules while in Germany. You can cause a lot of issues if you don’t, so never cut corners.
  • Make sure to recycle while you are there and do not litter. You want to be respectful of their land and this is one of the biggest things that they do.
  • You will find that a lot of places do not have card machines, so you are going to want to exchange some of your cash for Euros, so you can pay with cash at many of these places.
  • Mostly everything in Germany is closed on Sunday, so don’t be surprised if you cannot do anything on a Sunday during your cruise.
  • Smoking can be banned, but a lot of people disregard the ban and continue to smoke anyway. Don’t be surprised if someone lights up right next to you in a restaurant.
  • There are many cultural places to stop and eat, almost around every corner and you can be sure to find their famous German beer. You need to eat and drink like them while visiting the area at least try it out.

  • Why should I choose a river cruise?A river cruise is a great comprehensive way to visit various countries in Europe. Unlike land tours where you might have to travel by train or bus during the day, cruises take advantage of the evenings and nights to do the major traveling and allow you to use your days to visit the destinations and sites. Plus, once you’re onboard, the cruises are mostly all-inclusive. If you want to add on a helicopter tour or some kind of extension, then that might cost you more money, but the meals, lodging, trasnportation, and most tours on the itinerary are included in the price, making it not only an excellent value but also much easier to plan. Plus, unlike land tours of Europe, you don’t have to pack and unpack every day when you move to a new city – your room simply glides along the river with you.
  • What should I look for on a riverboat?Unlike mega-yachts, bigger cruise ships, or expedition vessels, river boats are comparatively simple. They feature comfortable rooms, but they are not particularly spacious. You won’t likely find gyms , large pools , or various dining options, but you will find that the vessels are well appointed and have friendly crews and guides that are enthusiastic to make your experience memorable.
  • Berlin Cruise Port Facilities

Unter den Linden from the Brandenburg Gate to the Berlin Cathedral and the immediate blocks to the south provide a wonderful stroll through the heart of the elegantly reborn city. Duck into the Adlon Hotel for a coffee, or visit the pastry shop just down the same side of the street. Walk past the State Library, Humboldt University and State Opera House. Pause in the Lustgarten bordering the River Spree and gaze up at the magnificent Berlin Cathedral. It is hard to imagine that an Allied bomb long ago dropped through the dome and largely destroyed the interior. Likewise, it’s amazing to think that decades after the Second World War, the German and French cathedrals were still in ruins and the lovely apartment buildings bordering the Gendarmenmarkt and the upscale shopping along Friederichstrasse did not exist as they once had before the Nazi monster arrived.

    Where You’re Docked

Most cruise ships dock at Warnemunde, near Rostock, on the north German coast east of the Kiel Canal entrance and west of the Baltic Sea. It is 165 miles south to Berlin, a three-hour train ride or a slightly longer and decidedly less comfortable bus journey. While the DB runs regular trains every two hours, most requiring a change at Rostock, the cruise lines provide direct rail or bus transfers from the ship’s side to central Berlin with either a convenient drop-off and pick-up point for independent sightseers or a connecting city tour.

If you are taking an Elbe River cruise that embarks here, be sure to stay in Berlin for at least three nights before or after the cruise.
