Bora Bora Lagoon Catamaran Sunset Cruise Review

This relatively small and incredibly beautiful island is a true paradise with its crystal clear waters and amazing sunsets. It has a casual and relaxed lifestyle suitable for anyone looking for a peaceful destination. It is also an internationally acclaimed honeymoon destination. Everywhere you go, you will see flowering hibiscus and also coconut plantations, the latter being an important industry in Bora Bora.

The island is located 230 kilometres/140 miles north west of Papeete reached by plane with several flights operating daily. It is 32 kilometres/20 miles in circumference and public transportation is very meager with only one bus route serving the island. One can however easily rent a car or a bicycle on a Tahiti vacation package.

The capital and main town is Vaitape located on the west side of the main island and is home to approximately half of the total population of Bora Bora. Another small town is Matira which has the largest beach and has a number of hotels and restaurants to choose from.

There are two mountains on the island. The tallest and most majestic is Mount Otemanu which rises to a height of 730 metres/2400 feet and can be seen from most areas of Bora Bora due to its jagged peaks which tower over the island. The other is Mount Pahia in the south of the Bora Bora which is almost as imposing at a height of 660 metres/220 feet.

About Bora Bora French Polynesia

Considered by many the worlds most beautiful island, the Society Island of Bora Bora in the nation of French Polynesia is only 4 miles by 2½ miles. This stunning land is made up of a central island and a barrier reef of motus, or islets, each one variously connected to the next depending on the tides. Its deep lagoon glows countless shades of turquoise and emerald, and its palm-lined shores and steep forested slopes rise up dramatically to the pillar-like peak of Mt. Otemanu at 2,379 feet. American novelist James Michener put the island on many travelers itineraries in the 1950s when he called it the South Pacific at its unforgettable best. Rugged mountain roads through lush landscapes lead to spellbinding cliffside views.

Long before Micheners acclaim, the island saw the arrival of Polynesias Tongan people in the 4th century. Though Europeans sighted the remote land in 1722, it was James Cook who landed here in 1770. Missionaries from London followed 50 years later, eventually establishing a Protestant church. France annexed Bora Bora as a colony in 1888. During World War II, the United States used the island as a military base, but combat never reached the remote outpost. Today, French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France. Bora Boras port town of Vaitape, on the west coast, faces the main channel that leads into the lagoon.

Are Bans On Mega Ships A Growing Trend

Overnight Stay of Bora Bora on our Cruise

The Cayman Islands are another island destination that doesnt anticipate a return to unrestricted growth in cruise traffic once travel demand recovers. In early 2021, the countrys premier Alden McLaughlin announced that his government was scrapping plans to construct a cruise port that officials had previously supported.

Plans to build berthing facilities at Grand Caymanwhich banned cruise ship arrivals at the outset of the pandemicwere meant to address concerns that the requirement to tender passengers to and from ships anchored offshore grew more onerous as the ships grew larger. Executives from Royal Caribbean and Carnival had warned their newest ships are too big to tender and would skip ports without berthing facilities in the future, reducing overall visitors to the island.

What I foresee is less focus on growing cruise tourism,” McLaughin told constituents in a February press conference. “We can survive without the large numbers, and we need more balancenot to overwhelm the systems we have by sheer volume of people.

What does all this mean for travelers, both cruisers and non-cruisers? The mega cruise ships range of amenities and accommodations have their own draws, but how might cruise itineraries look if more cruise ports say enough is enough to the largest ships?

Islands Of Tahiti Position To Small And Medium

New cruise regulations come into force in French Polynesia from Jan. 1, 2022. According to Tahiti Cruise Club, they are as follows:

  • favor year-round turnaround ships based in French Polynesia and of small and medium capacities
  • allow transpacific repositioning of turnaround ships with the capacity of up to 2,500 passengers
  • for transpacific cruises, limit the capacity of the ships calling in French Polynesia waters to 3,500 passengers. Calls of larger capacity ships put stress on maritime infrastructure, services , as well as on the environment, which is especially the case in remote islands. Tahiti, Moorea and Raiatea will be preferred islands calls for these large capacity ships, according to Tahiti Cruise Club
  • refuse stopovers of very large capacity ships . Tahiti Cruise Club said that their capacity and size are not suitable for the destination.

According to a press release, this positioning is the result of a shared vision of sustainable and inclusive development integrated into the 2021-2023 recovery plan for French Polynesia, as well as in the tourism development strategy, Fariiraa Manihini 2025.

Because of the strategic location of French Polynesia in particular the Port of Papeete on the transpacific route exemptions may be granted to vessels of higher capacity in technical transit on the islands of Tahiti, Moorea and Raiatea. These three islands can provide a call service with suitable infrastructure, Tahiti Cruise Club said.
