Do Aaa And Aarp Travel Discounts Really Save Money On Travel
While AAA and AARP provide their members with several travel benefits including discounts on vacation rentals, cruises, parking and rail vacations, I wanted to find out if the discounts offered on the core travel expenses made membership in either of these organizations worthwhile. A couple of years ago, I looked at just the AARP discounts and found that joining was more than worthwhile. Well see if that still holds true and, in addition, compare the value of AAA membership travel discounts.
Airfare
Frequent flyers may be familiar with the AARP discount on British Airways of up to $400 off premium airfares. What you may not know is that economy fares also receive a discount of $65 off a round trip airfare purchase and $130 off premium economy.
Hotel
Both AAA and AARP offer discounts of up to 20% on various hotel chains including Hyatt, Choice, Starwood, Hilton, Wyndham, LaQuinta and Best Western. I selected the Best Western chain and the Orlando Gateway property for a comparison of discounts.
Rental Car
For my next comparison, I decided to search for a rental car for our upcoming trip to Greece. AAA came in with a three-day rental for $120 total, which is not a bad price. Through their Travel Center Search Tool, AARP quoted $97 total for the same vehicle and same rental car company. While not an extensive exercise, the conclusion Ive come to is that you should check both sites and compare discounts as each site has the potential for a deal.

With the increase in vaccinations and many of the worlds major cruise lines returning to sailings, AAA travel advisors have experienced a significant increase in inquiries and bookings for cruises domestically and internationally. AAA Travel booking data indicates a strong U.S. demand for cruises throughout the remainder of this year, and even more demand next year, for sailings to Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean.
In June, Celebrity Edge left Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and was the first ship to set sail from a U.S. port since the start of the pandemic. Throughout this summer other cruises set sail from Florida, California and Washington state, and this fall cruise ships will depart from New Orleans, Baltimore, Galveston, Miami, Port Canaveral, Mobile, Cape Liberty, San Juan, Barbados and Tampa.
For most cruises, proof of vaccination is required to sail. In addition, major cruise lines sailing from the United States have recently begun requiring proof of a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours in advance of embarkation for all guests. When we talk about AAA auto insurance, we are actually referring to over 50 individual motor clubs under the AAA umbrella.
