Are Drink Packages Really Worth It

Are you toying with the idea of adding a drinks package to your upcoming cruise? Were here to tell you: it depends because there are several aspects youll need to consider. Fortunately, our parent company, Dreamlines have done the hard work for you, and have calculated whether a drinks package would really make economic sense on the specific cruise youre travelling on.

Before we kick things off, there are a couple of questions youll need to consider:

Don’t Miss: Lots Of Honor Port Canaveral

Princess Cruises Alcohol Policy

Princess fits in with the most standard alcohol policies. Wine and champagne are allowed, but any other drink, including beer or spirits, arent allowed to be brought aboard on embarkation.

If you bring wine/champagne, you are allowed one bottle per adult of drinking age. The bottle must be 750 ml or smaller. Magnum bottles arent allowed.

You can drink the wine in your cabin for no charge, but if you drink them in a public place, a $15 corkage fee is charged.

You can bring additional bottles of wine or champagne with you, but anything over the one allotted for each passenger will see a $15 corkage fee, no matter where it is consumed.

Alcohol Allowed: One bottle of wine/champagne per adult. Additional bottles are allowed but charged a $15 fee.

Attempt Bringing Beer Back While In Port

8 Best Celebrity Cruises Cocktails

Most cruise line policies strictly forbid passengers from bringing any alcohol back to the ship from port. That means beer is not allowed back onboard, of course. But weve found that security on many ships will often overlook passengers bringing beer back onboard. To find out, we typically experiment with attempting to bring on a few cans during the first port day.

Were never sneaky and dont attempt to hide the beer. Rather, we run it through the x-ray machine in plain sight. Sometimes the beer will be flagged by security and stored until the final night of the cruise. In that case, we know its probably not worth attempting to bring beer back aboard when in subsequent ports.

But in many instances, security actually allows the beer to be carried on the cruise, no questions asked. For whatever reason, weve had more success with beer cans being accepted, rather than bottles.

So go ahead and give it a try! The worst case outcome is that security will hold onto your beers for you until the final night of the cruise. And you can still drink those beers on the final night. So you really dont have anything to lose by attempting to bring a few beers back aboard the ship with you. And you dont have to be sneaky about it.

Exploit Cruise Ship Happy Hours

Many cruise lines offer a happy hour at certain bars, at certain times, with reduced priced drinks. Sometimes these happy hours are planned and stated in the daily newsletter. Other instances theyll be listed on the bar menus themselves.

Often such drink deals are only subtly advertised. So passengers must be observant and seek out these drink deals. Keep your eyes peeled for happy hour promotions on table-top signs at cruise bars. And do know that cruise happy hours vary by cruise line, ship, and even each sailing. Cruise happy hours change constantly.

Cruise happy hours even change from from bar to bar on the same ship. On some Celebrity cruise sailings, weve found $3 draft beers and $4 wine pours at most bars during their happy hour. But this Celebrity happy hour does not extend to every bar on the ship. Meanwhile, their martini bar can have an entirely different happy hour with select martinis at half price. Yet the martini bar doesnt honor the beer & wine happy hour. So be sure to check around all the bars and find a happy hour that is best for you!

Also, some cruises will have two happy hour periods: one before dinner and another into the late night. Princess happy hour had formally done this. Although in recent years happy hour has seemed to disappear from Princess ships.

Can I Bring Alcohol On My Cruise Drink Policies For Every Cruise Line

Can you bring alcohol on your cruise? The answer is likely yes, but with lots of fine print.

One of the reasons cruises offer such great value is because the cruise line wants to get passengers on board. Once they are a captive audience, then the cruise lines can sell them all sorts of things from excursions to souvenirs to alcohol.

And have now doubt selling drinks is a big business for the ships.

With literally thousands of people ready to let loose in the warm sun, the booze flows like water. Its not an accident that a cruise ship can easily have a dozen bars and several other restaurants to grab a drink.

In fact, when looking at the onboard spending, cruise ships bring in between 35-45% of the cruise fare in the form of spending on the ship. So for every $1,000 in cruise fare, people spend about $450 on the ship, on average. And much of that is in the form of alcohol sales.

But that doesnt mean the cruise lines are only after your wallet. While nearly every cruise line prohibits your bringing beer or liquor aboard the ship to drink, many will let you bring some wine or champagne.

It likely wont quench your thirst for the entire cruise, but its good to know that if you want to save a few bucks, then you can bring at least some alcohol aboard on your own.

To help you sort out what you can and cant bring, weve gone through the trouble of rounding up each cruise lines alcohol policy.

How To Get Cheap Booze Delivered To Your Cabin On The Final Night

At some point during your cruise, go to the duty-free liquor store onboard and buy a bottle. This tax-free liquor is well-priced and you may even catch an additional sale on alcohol from time to time. Unfortunately, the duty-free shop will not allow you to take those bottles back to your cabin that is, until the last night. On the final afternoon of your cruise, any bottles that you purchased will be delivered directly to your stateroom.

Also on the final evening of the cruise, the duty-free store will, in fact, allow you to walk out of the shop with any liquor you purchase. On one cruise, we noticed that an entire liter bottle of vodka at the duty-free shop was actually priced less than two shots of the exact same vodka if you were to purchase it at the bar.

Additionally, any alcohol purchased while in port will also be delivered to your stateroom on the finalday of your cruise. So dont hesitate to buy that delicious Jamaican rum or snag that bottle of tequila while docked in Cozumel. When you return to the cruise ship, you can easily check the bottle with security. Then once the last night of your cruise rolls around, any bottles that youve purchased ashore will be delivered to your room.

So on your last night of a cruise, have a party in your stateroom and enjoy! Just be sure to schedule a late disembarkation time the next day.

Attend Cruise Drink Tasting Events

Wine tastings, cocktail tastings, martini tastings, and even beer tastings can be some of the best drink deals at sea. Personally, its our favorite tip to partake in for cheap drinks on a cruise.

Specialty drinks, like fine martinis, typically cost $10-$15 , plus gratuity. Five fancy cocktails could easily cost a cruiser $75. But when you attend a tasting event, you often get five full-sized drinks for $25 per person. These tasting events can be incredible drinks bargains on a cruise. Plus you get to try a variety of different cocktails you may have never thought to try before.

During some cruise tasting events that weve attended, the drinks are smaller portions coming in at about 4-6 ounces. Yet other tasting events, weve been pleasantly surprised by full-sized drinks!

Weve found that drinks tastings on NCL to be of particularly good value, as theyve poured some large and strong drinks during their tastings. Norwegian usually does a martini tasting, margarita tasting, a beer tasting, and a wine tasting during their regular cruises. If you dont want to drink all five drinks, consider attending with a partner/friend and sharing the experience.

Tip: If you ever happen to cruise on the Norwegian Bliss, be sure to go the show Happy Hour Prohibition The Musical. It costs $25, but that fee includes five prohibition-era cocktails throughout the entire performance. Its great fun and great value!

Do I Have To Pay For Nonalcoholic Drinks On A Cruise Ship

Luxury cruise lines, river cruise lines and some premium lines offer some or all drinks free of charge. Viking Ocean ships, for example, include sodas at lunch and dinner, stock complimentary sodas and water in cabins and include all specialty coffees in the cruise fare. Luxury lines Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas and Crystal are among those with all-inclusive beverage service, so any available non-alcoholic drink would be included in the cruise fare.

On most mainstream cruise lines, however, only certain beverages are included in the fares. Complimentary drinks typically include tap water, basic coffee, tea , hot chocolate , milk and a selection of juices with meals. Soda, sparkling water, other juices , smoothies, brand-name coffee and specialty coffees tend to cost extra.

Disney is one exception it includes sodas during meals, in the teen-only lounge and from select beverage stations. Sodas do cost extra at bars and lounges on Disney ships.

Be A Loyal Cruiser To Get Rewarded With Free Drinks

Oceania Cruises Drink Packages

If youve come back on the same cruise line for a second cruise, you may be rewarded for your loyalty with a bottle of champagne, a few drink tickets, and perhaps a cocktail party. Cruise a few more times on that same cruise line and you may find complimentary happy hours every single night!

Cruise lines are quite fond of treating their loyal patrons with booze. Even if youve only cruised once prior with the ship, there is usually a loyalty party event that includes complimentary drinks. So if this is your second or greater instance of cruising with the same cruise line, then be sure to check what alcohol perks you may be entitled to.

Weve found that Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have some particularly enticing loyalty perks for cruisers who enjoy free drinks! In addition to exclusive parties with free drinks, Celebrity rewards their Elite Captain Club members with a daily cocktail hour with unlimited free drinks from 5:00-7:00 at most bars and lounges. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean rewards Diamond members of the Crown & Anchor society by loading free drink tickets onto their SeaPass card.

So it can really pay off for drinkers to be loyal to those lines!

Are There Other Benefits To Drink Package Beyond Saving Money

The biggest point of the packages is that they can save you money if you plan to drink your fill on a cruise. But there are some other benefits beyond just the potential money saved.

As mentioned above, some people enjoy that they can get the package and not have to worry about the bill. Instead of keeping a tally of what they’ve spent, they can just relax and know exactly what they are paying each day. That gives some peace of mind.

But there is another benefit — the option of trying new things without worrying about the cost. Head to a bar normally to try something new, and you pay out of pocket whether you love it or hate it. With the drink package, you can try drinks you normally wouldn’t order without the risk.

If you happen to not like it, you didn’t pay anything extra thanks to the package. You can head right back and order something else. That’s a bonus that many people don’t realize.

Does Everyone In The Cabin Have To Purchase The Beverage Package

Oceania Riviera Cruise Ship Cabin

Often yes, if one person in a cabin buys the package, all adults will need to as well. That said, the rules do vary depending on the cruise line you are sailing.

Carnival requires that each adult in a stateroom purchase a drink package if one person does. So if a husband purchases the package but the wife doesn’t drink, she must still purchase the drink package as well.

Royal Caribbean requires adult passengers in a cabin to all purchase the package if one person does.

Norwegian Cruise Lines requires each adult in the stateroom to purchase the same drink package.

Princess does not specifically say that all passengers in a cabin have to purchase the drink package. Other sources confirm that other adults don’t have to buy the drink package.

Celebrity Cruises spells out detailed terms of their drink package, including age restrictions, and that packages may not be shared. However, it does not state that all adults in the cabin have to purchase the package. A phone call to the cruise line confirmed that you do not have to purchase for everyone in the cabin.

MSC Cruises requires each adult to purchase the drink package if one person does. If you are traveling with a minor, then they will need to have the non-alcoholic drink package.

Bottom line: Except for a few cases, you should expect everyone has to buy it if one person does.
