Toyota Fj40 Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a vehicle that practically defines dependability. Since their inception in the 1950s, Toyotas storied off-roaders have been proven in some of the harshest conditions imaginable, and over the course of six decades, the Land Cruiser name has become a benchmark for reliability. It likely comes as little surprise to learn that the concept for the Land Cruiser was inspired by the American Jeep. In 1950, the US Government commissioned Toyota to build 100 Willys Jeeps for use by the Military Police during the Korean War. Toyota obliged but immediately saw room for improvement on the old American design. In 1951 Toyota developed their own prototype which drew on the best the Jeep had to offer but with numerous improvements and refinements. Production of the Toyota Jeep BJ began in 1953 and the vehicle was put into service primarily for police and military use. In 1954, the civilian version gained the Land Cruiser name, becoming a welcome tool for farming, construction, industry, or anywhere else a rugged all-purpose truck was needed to traverse difficult terrain.

The 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser Fj40 Shown Here

The FJ40 you see here will need a full rebuild, as mentioned further up its been sitting out in the New Mexico sun for a number of decades after an unnamed mechanical fault resulted in the engine being partially disassembled before it was abandoned.

The good news is that the numbered engine block is still accounted for, meaning that a motivated individual will have the option to restore it back to original condition if they so desire.

The vehicle does look largely complete with the exception of the seats and some engine parts, and the seller on eBay mentions that people are welcome to go inspect it in person, or have it inspected before placing a bid or making an offer.

If youd like to read more about this FJ40, contact the seller about an inspection, or place an offer on it you can visit the listing here.

Optimising The Toyota Land Cruiser For Comfort

Toyota released a number of models oriented more towards comfort in 1967, starting with the production of the Land Cruiser 55 between 1967 and 1980. This model was referred to as the FJ55 and was available in a station wagon option, the first of its kind in the Land Cruiser line-up. Next was the front-engine Land Cruiser 60 Series, an eight-seater car that stayed in production for ten years from 1980 to 1990, making a name for itself in markets around the world. The end of the 60 Series production run coincided with the launch of the curvy Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series, announced a year earlier at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Toyota Land Cruiser: Military And Off

Models of the Toyota Land Cruiser first appeared in 1953 under a different name the Toyota Jeep BJ. This vehicle was created by Toyota in order to provide a capable military vehicle for troops during the Korean War. Occupying Japan at the time was the United States, who ordered the country to produce these vehicles in large quantities. Eventually, the Toyota Jeep BJ went into production in 1953 but, in response to trademark disputes, the name of the model was changed to the Toyota Land Cruiser a year later. Toyota also began producing off-road civilian vehicles in 1955 with the Series 20 models, including the Land Cruiser FJ25 and BJ25. Following the success of this series, Toyota announced the classic Series 40 model in 1960, now with low-range gear options and a 3.9 L engine. In terms of production numbers, the years of 1968, 1972 and 1973 were significant milestones for Toyota and its Land Cruiser model, thanks to worldwide sales of 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 respectively. The power of the Toyota Land Cruiser could be seen all over the world by 1978, with countries such as West Germany and Ireland using them for civilian and army use. In 1984, the 70 Series was put into production, offering a range of options including hard-tops and soft-tops. These automobiles were followed by diesel varieties in 1990, sporting a 3.4 L engine.

The Creation Of The Land Cruiser

With a name inspired by the British Land Rover, the Toyota Land Cruiser initially took a lot of inspiration from the Willys Jeep. In fact one of the first Toyota four-wheel drives was developed based on the design of an American Jeep that was captured by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Philippines during WWII.

This is the Toyota Jeep BJ from 1951, it was built by the Japanese automaker for the US Government for use in the Korean War.

In 1954 Willys claimed a trademark violation on the use of the word Jeep by Toyota, at which point they renamed the vehicle the Land Cruiser. This model name had already been used on the Studebaker Land Cruiser, however as the model was being discontinued in 1954 there were no trademark issues.

The Land Cruisers that we would recognize today first appeared in 1955 as the J20 series. The J20 was succeeded by the J40 series in 1960, the J40 series would enjoy an astonishing 41 year production run.

After sitting outdoors in New Mexico for decades its clear that this FJ40 is going to need a bare metal restoration but it could make a good starting point for a motivated individual or team.

This 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 has been sitting in the New Mexico sun for decades waiting for someone to rescue it and get it back on the road. Its currently for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $6,750 USD.

Considering the fact that its been sitting outside for so long he severity of the rust doesnt look unmanageable for the right person, the dry New Mexico climate will have helped with this of course. That said its clear that it will need a full frame-off rebuild.

Turbocharged 1986 Toyota Bandeirante Oj50

This 1986 Toyota Bandeirante is a Brazilian-market example that was acquired by the seller in 2020 and subsequently imported to Oklahoma. The 3.8-liter Mercedes-Benz diesel inline-four was fitted with a turbocharger under previous ownership and is mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case.

What We Think

This is not a concours FJ, its just very good, which is good news for the Toyota enthusiast on a budget because it means that the hammer price might start with a two rather than a three.

And, because its fundamentally solid and in fine overall condition, there is plenty of headroom to add value over the coming months and years as the new owner starts work and play with this truck the great unwashed are finally starting to appreciate early Toyota Land Cruisers, and good ones are starting to make their mark on the scene and this can only continue to grow as people realise how easy they are to work on, how accessible parts still are, and how much fun they are to own.

We think this lovely example will sell for anywhere between £18,000 and £25,000, which isnt exactly peanuts but then you are getting an awful lot of car for the money.
