Disney Cruise Line to require kids 5 and older to be vaccinated

Editors note: This post has been updated with new information.

When the first cruises allowing Americans restarted in spring 2021, all major lines were sailing with at least 90% of passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. That meant they required just about everyone on board to have their shots, with few exceptions allowed for young children and people who cant be vaccinated due to medical conditions or religious beliefs.

But now, little more than a year later, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has withdrawn its opt-in guidance for cruise lines, and many are now allowing more unvaccinated passengers to sail.

So, will you need a vaccine to cruise? Click on your favorite cruise line below to find out.

Note: In order to be considered “fully vaccinated,” passengers must have received their final shot at least 15 days prior to embarkation. Most lines only accept vaccines recognized and approved by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Generally, proof of inoculation must include your name, the type of vaccine you received and the dates on which you received all required doses.

Disney To Require Vaccinations For Bahamas Cruises

TALLAHASSEE – Disney Cruise Line on Tuesday joined other lines that dock in Florida in planning to require COVID-19 vaccinations for most passengers ages 12 or older traveling to the Bahamas.

The announcement came after Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis last week said cruise ships will only be allowed to enter ports, including those on private islands used by cruise lines, if all crew members and passengers eligible for vaccines have been fully vaccinated.

Minnis’ order runs from Sept. 3 to Nov. 1.

Exceptions will be made for adults with medical conditions that prohibit being vaccinated.

The ships Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream sail from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas.

“Guests must provide proof of vaccination by uploading their vaccination card to the Safe Passage by Inspire website no later than 24 hours before their sailing,” Disney Cruise Line said on its website Tuesday. “Guests who choose not to provide proof of vaccination to meet the requirements of The Bahamas will not be permitted to board the ship.”

Disney will require passengers under age 12 — who are not eligible to be vaccinated — to provide proof of negative COVID-19 tests taken within a week of the sail dates and to take second tests prior to boarding.

The company will allow passengers who have purchased tickets for cruises to the Bahamas during the period covered by Minnis’ order to change or cancel plans without “Disney-imposed cancellation fees.”

    New Requirement Begins Thursday

ORLANDO, Fla. A new COVID-19 vaccine requirement that requires all guests 5 years and older to be vaccinated is now in effect on Disney cruises.

The requirement was announced by Disney Cruise Line in mid-November for all vaccine-eligible guests to be inoculated against COVID-19 for all cruises on Thursday, Jan. 13, or after.

As we set sail again, the health and safety of our Guests, Cast Members and Crew Members is a top priority, a Disney news release said. Our focus remains on operating our ships in a responsible way that continues to create magic or all on board.

The cruise line said it applies to all sailings in the U.S. and abroad. The requirements previously only required guests 12 and older to be vaccinated against COVID.

The new rules come as other cruise lines have been forced to cancel sailings due to a recent spike in cases and port restrictions. Norwegian Cruise Line issued a new advisory Tuesday, canceling numerous cruises, including one based at Port Canaveral.

The move comes a couple of weeks after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding COVID-19 and cruise ships, warning against cruise travel regardless of vaccination status due to the omicron variant of COVID-19.

Children who set sail on Disney cruise ships will soon have to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Kids younger than five will have to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken in the days before they board the ship.

The cruise line currently requires that children 12 and over be inoculated.

Younger Guests Do Not Need To Be Vaccinated

While Disney Cruise Lines current protocols require that all guests age 5 and older be fully vaccinated before sailing, that age requirement will be changed for cruises departing September 2 and later. At that time, only guests age 12 and older must be fully vaccinated in order to sail.

The cruise lines updated protocols do state, however, that Disney Cruise Line highly recommends that Guests ages 11 and younger be fully vaccinated before sailing.

Fully vaccinated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , means a complete series of primary vaccination doses completed at least 14 days prior to embarkation. Booster shots are not required to be fully vaccinated.

The youngest guests will no longer need to be fully vaccinated to sail with Disney Cruise Line beginning September 2.

Disney Cruise Line Royal Caribbean Drop Pre

Cruise Lines further lift COVID-19 requirements Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have further rolled back their COVID-19 restrictions.

Two more cruise lines are dropping COVID-19 testing requirements before passengers embark on a trip.

Disney Cruise Line updated its requirements on Tuesday, saying that U.S. sailings starting on or after Nov. 14 will no longer require a coronavirus test, regardless of vaccination status.

Disney also does not require vaccinations for guests 5 years old and older but does recommend them.

Until Nov. 14, Disney will continue to require passengers who are fully vaccinated and would like to be exempt from testing to upload their proof of vaccination status to the Inspire Diagnostics Safe Passage website by midnight before embarkation day.

Unvaccinated guests who are sailing before Nov. 14 must still submit results from a proctored telehealth antigen test, a rapid or lab-based PCR test or Nucleic Acid Amplification Test that was taken no more than two days before the sailing.

If a guest is not fully vaccinated, meaning theyve only received a partial vaccine series, the cruise line considers them unvaccinated.

Children under the age of 4 are not required to be vaccinated or tested.

Royal Caribbean has also rolled back its pre-cruise testing requirements with some exceptions.
