MSC Cruises – Our History

1 665-4655MSC Cruises/Customer service

When MSC cruise will start?

The MSC Meraviglia will kick off MSC Cruises restart starting August 2, 2021, with 3- and 4-night cruises from Miami to The Bahamas and featuring the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Is MSC the worst cruise line?

MSC Cruises has been rated the worst cruise line by passengers who complained about poor customer service, surly staff and mediocre food, according to a new survey of Which? Customers complained of queues for meals and at entertainment venues on MSCs 19 ships, which can carry almost 6,500 passengers.

Balancing Cruise And Cargo

If both cruising and container shipping had simultaneously collapsed, as was feared in the early days of the pandemic, MSC would have been pummeled from both sides. Instead, MSC made so much in container shipping that it has been able to heavily support its cruise line.

Subsidizing cruise losses shaves some of MSCs container shipping profits off the top, however, ownership in the two maritime sectors turns out to be a good hedge.

Container shipping overall suffered significant losses in the years prior to COVID. During the five years from 2015-19, when container rates were very low, MSC Cruises posted aggregate net income of $1.89 billion, offsetting market pressure on the container side.

What happens if omicron winds down and the COVID era finally ends? One theory is that consumers would spend more on services and pare spending on goods, leading to decreased imports, reduced congestion and falling freight rates. Cruise line occupancy would rise, more ships would return to service and cruise profits would rebound. If so, MSCs cruise income would recover just as its container income fell back to earth another hedge.

Yet the cruise company is far from out of the woods, and theres no guarantee it wont need more help from the container side.

Cruising still operates under COVID restrictions, omicron may not be the final variant, and theres a war in Europe, the most important region for MSC Cruises in terms of both itineraries and passenger sourcing.

Cruisings Roots In Shipping

Theres a deep historical connection between cargo shipping and the cruise industry. That connection has faded over the years, with the exception of MSC.

Pleasure cruising arose after the advent of commercial aviation and demise of transoceanic passenger liners. NCL was founded by Knut Kloster, a Norwegian shipowner, and Ted Arison, whose father ran an Israeli shipping agency. Royal Caribbean was initially backed by Norwegian shipowners Sigurd Skaugen and Arne Wilhelmsen and the London-based shipping company Gotaas-Larsen.

Other cruise lines Cunard, Princess, Celebrity and Costa were launched by the families and companies that previously ran passenger liner and cargo shipping services.

Italys Gianluigi Aponte founded Mediterranean Shipping Company in 1970. MSC entered the cruise sector in 1988. It began building new ships in 2003 and has been rapidly expanding its fleet ever since. As MSC Cruises grew over the decades, it remained a private family affair that operated alongside the container shipping division. MSC Cruises chairman is Pierfrancesco Vago, husband of Apontes daughter, Alexa. She is a director and her father is vice chairman.

The other three cruise giants Carnival , Royal Caribbean and NCL went public. They took over other brands and shed their ties to shipping .

Tourism Cultural Heritage And Unesco

Cultural and natural heritage are in many cases the absolute basis for worldwide tourism. Cultural tourism is one of the megatrends that is reflected in massive numbers of overnight stays and sales. As is increasingly observing, the cultural heritage is needed for tourism, but also endangered by it. The ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Charter from 1999 is already dealing with all of these problems. As a result of the tourist hazard, for example, the cave was rebuilt for tourists. is an important buzzword in this area. Furthermore, the focus of UNESCO in war zones is to ensure the protection of cultural heritage in order to maintain this future important economic basis for the local population. And there is intensive cooperation between UNESCO, the , the and . There are extensive international and national considerations, studies and programs to protect cultural assets from the effects of tourism and those from war. In particular, it is also about training civilian and military personnel. But the involvement of the locals is particularly important. The founding president of Blue Shield International summed it up with the words: âWithout the local community and without the local participants, that would be completely impossibleâ.

Its the same thing for automobiles. Acura is part of Honda. Lexus is part of Toyota. And Audi is part of Volkswagen.

I Was On Celebrity Cruises First Passenger Sailing Back Since Covid

An inside look at life on the Celebrity Edge at sea.

As the Beastie Boys would have it, you have to fightfor your rightto party, and the June Celebrity Edge re-launch out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida the first cruise ship carrying ticketed passengers from a United States port since March of 2020 was just that, a celebration of its victorious battle to reboot the cruising industry.

From the start, the Celebrity Edge cruise had the aura of a grand event: the ship, which can carry slightly over 3,000 guests, sailed with 1,200 passengers. After presenting their COVID-19 vaccination cards, passengers were welcomed with cheers from the crew and escorted to their staterooms, equipped with face masks bearing the Celebrity Cruises logo. The masks were recommended for shore days in Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Nassau.

In the pre-pandemic era, passengers mustered out to crowded assembly stations in life vests, learning about emergency protocols and meeting their fellow passengers. On Celebrity Cruises, the process can be conducted with the help of an app and is virtually free of human contact.

Naturally, the pre-embarkation festivities for the Western Caribbean cruise entailed the inevitable photo-op at Port Everglades, with the Celebrity Edge principals including Captain Kate McCue, the first and only American woman working as a cruise ship captain.

As Fain noted at a press conference during the cruise, The pandemic once seemed endless. Now, the whole thing seems like a blip.

How Many People Are On Board

The ship is sailing at just 36% capacity, a level Fain considers a sign of untapped demand given the short notice to book.

Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary Royal Caribbean Group, had received approval by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to sail one of its ships with paying passengers on board late last month.

While the lower occupancy means the cruise is less profitable, Fain told CNBC that he wanted to slowly rebuild operations.

We havent been operating for 15 months, our crew havent been operating on ships for 15 months, he said. We want to give people the chance to practice and get back to the experience.

Eight of the 14 ships within Celebrity Cruises fleet plan to return to sailing this year, according to a Saturday news release.

A Basic Introduction To Msc Cruises

Before we take a closer look at why MSC Cruises might or might not be right for you, lets take a quick look at the history of the company. Founded in Italy in 1989 as a part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC Cruises has since become the fourth largest cruise company in the world.

Until relatively recently, their primary target was European cruisers, with minor forays into the North American market.

It was the aforementioned MSC Seaside that really changed things where the companys efforts to penetrate the North American market were concerned. The ship which sails year-round out of Miami was specifically designed for North America, with the company heavily promoting Seaside to both American and Canadian cruisers.

Two ships currently homeport in Florida: the MSC Armonia, which is expected to sail year-round from Tampa beginning in November 2020, and the Miami-based MSC Seaside. Seasonally, the MSC Merivaglia and the MSC Divina also operate from Miami.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is the newest private cruise line island in the Bahamas

In addition to the ships which ply the waters of the Caribbean, MSC Cruises recently invested heavily in the construction and opening of their own private Bahamian island called Ocean Cay Marine Reserve.

The island, which differs from the private islands of other lines because of its focus on the environment, includes a dock for one ship, pristine beaches, and many activities for guests to enjoy.

    Princess Cruises P& O P& O Australia & Aida

MSC Divina Cruise Ship Tour & Review 2022

Princess Cruises, which was the second-largest cruise line by net revenue as of a few years ago, is much younger than the above cruise lines. Founded in 1965 to serve the Mexican Riviera, Princess Cruises soon expanded to offering Alaskan cruises.

However, Princess Cruises was acquired less than a decade after its formation, in 1974 but not by Carnival. Instead, Princess Cruises first new owner was the British-based P& O, which grew the brand by leaps and bounds.

    Carnival Corporation & Plc

Carnival Corporation is the largest cruise operator, employing over a hundred ships across nine cruise lines.

Around 50% of cruise passengers sail with a Carnival-owned each year. And the companys namesake, Carnival Cruise Line, is the largest cruise line in the world by passenger volume.

The company owns mainstream cruise lines like Carnival, Princess, and Holland America. Along with the luxurious Cunard Line and ultra-luxury line Seabourn.

Additionally, Carnival owns brands that cater to specific markets. Costa Cruises caters to the Italian market, AIDA is for the German market, and theres P& O UK and P& O Australia.

The following cruise lines are owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC:

    Onboard Activities And Entertainment

Like other large ship cruise lines, MSC Cruises features large production shows, with lots of colorful music and dancers. The ships also have small combos that provide live music in some of the lounges. The main theater on each vessel is large and has modern facilities and equipment equal to almost any theater venue found ashore.

The End Of The Pandemic For Msc

MSC Musicas return marks the end of a busy and exciting time for MSC Cruises. Not only did the company make serious inroads by expanding its fleet from 17 to 19 during the pandemic, but there are also even more ships set to be released in 2022 and over the coming years.

While most of the cruise industry had to sit on the sidelines and wait, MSC Cruises convinced the Italian government to allow the cruise line to sail.

To achieve this safely, MSC developed a series of health and safety measures that are still followed by almost all cruise lines operating worldwide.

Cruises onboard MSC Grandiosa, sailing from Genoa, proved to be extremely popular and safe, prompting more cruise lines and countries to follow the same example. MSC Cruises brought cruising back safely during the pandemic.

It hasnt been plain sailing all the way through. During the winter of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, surges in cases in Italy and Europe forced MSC Cruises to suspend operations multiple times, particularly for MSC Grandiosa and MSC Magnifica, right before the holidays.

With cruise bookings surging for the Geneva, Switzerland-based cruise company, the focus can now go towards the release of four new ships in the coming months.

One of the most exciting new ships is MSC World Europa, which will set sail later this year. Packed with environmental features and running on LNG, she is also the largest ship to ever sail for MSC Cruises.
