Sunscreen you may be surprised but sunscreens are must items. The air is so clean in Alaska and so that light is stronger than normal.

Sunglasses as same as sunscreens, sunglasses are also must-have items when you get out of the ship and explore the port. Sunglasses will protect your eyes.

Insect Repellent you may be surprised but insect repellent is a must item if you visit Alaska in summer. Mosquitoes are there.

Hat when the weather is nice, you really need a hat to protect your face. This is the most items for hiking. The hut also helps you control the light you receive. The day time can be longer in summer. In that case, you can have a wide-brimmed hat.

Warm Hat this is the item you must bring. It protects you when the weather gets colder.

Gloves terramar thermasilk glove liner is my favourite. The fabric is silk. It is super warm. When you decide gloves, make sure mitts are not too tight with your fingers and are comfortable.

Water Bottle Alaska is not hot like the Caribbean but you need to be hydrated. You will go out for hiking and will be delighted when you find this water bottle in your backpack.

Hiking Shoes it is no surprise, but it rains a lot in Alaska. Its not comfortable to wear wet shoes. Waterproof hiking shoes are best. If you do not bring them, then you need to add backup sneakers.

Dress In Layers They Said

When I asked people who had been what to take, everyone said dress in layers. What did that mean? Did it mean long underwear, ski pants, heavy sweater, thermal socks, fur lined boots, parka, hat, gloves and a scarf? Those are the layers I dressed in on a trip to Germany in December.

Or did it mean, capris, t-shirt and a vest?

Not knowing, I packed EVERYTHING and ended up paying a $100 heavy bag charge. And I only ended up wearing about 1/3 of what I took.

Alaska Trip Cost Calculator

$1200 – $3000 for Lodging, Transportation & Meals $500 – $800

Price varies based on:

  • Number of days: More days cost more. We recommend 10 days or more.
  • Peak vs. Shoulder Season: Hotel and transportation rates can be lower in May and September, resulting in savings of 10-18% on land tours.
  • Lodging: The standard Alaska hotel room costs about $275 per night in summer. Economy hotels run about $100 less and premium/luxury hotels about $100 more.
  • Cruise Pricing: Cruise rates fluctuate. Shoulder season tends to be cheaper, but when you book and what type of cabin you choose matters more. Early booking discounts can be significant as well as last minute deals. Oceanview and balcony staterooms can cost twice what inside cabins cost.
  • Transportation: Renting a car is more expensive than traveling by train/motorcoach if youre traveling alone, but less expensive if there are 3 or more in your party.
  • Number and Type of Excursions: Prices vary from $25 for a museum visit to $60-90 for half-day guided hiking to $150-175 for a day cruise to $275-350 for a flightseeing tour to $500-600 for a fly-in bear viewing, guided fishing, or heli-hiking adventure.

How Much Are Alaskan Cruises Flights And Hotels

This is obvious, but depending on where you live and your departure ports, you will need to calculate in the cost of flights. If you are taking a one-way cruise either leaving or ending in Seward, Alaska, you will need to fly to Anchorage. Lets just say that its;not cheap or convenient. Even if you are cruising round-trip from Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC, flights are not as abundant as popular cruise ports in Florida.;Flying from Boston to Seattle, our flights were about $100 more per person than a flight to Floridabut, we got lucky.

Consider Round-trip Seattle for Cheaper Flights

Given the time travel, many cruisers will want to consider spending at least one pre-cruise day at a hotel, and possibly even a post cruise day. Sometimes, travelers to Alaska extend the entire trip;with a Cruisetour.;A cruisetour adds extra days to your cruise, on either the front or the back end, with a portion of your trip occurring on land. These cruisetours can add hundreds of dollars per person to the cruise fare. The only;good thing is that all of your tours and transfers during the land portion will be included and arranged for you.

New Rules Allow Cruises In Alaska Heres Why The Season Will Still Be Slow

How Much Does Alaskan Cruise Cost

As soon as Congress passed a bill Thursday to temporarily exempt Alaska-bound cruise ships from the Passenger Vessel Services Act, Holland America announced it would sail north on July 24. Norwegian Cruise Line is taking reservations for early August.

It takes time to prepare a ship and crew. And cruise line executives have complained rules the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention imposed on the industry arent workable. For instance, Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Frank Del Rio said, consider the mask mandate for extended indoor dining.

In between bites or sips, youve got to put it back on and take it off and put it back on its absurd, he told CNBC in early May. I mean, we wouldnt put our customers through that.

The CDC hasnt issued looser standards since then. But others in the industry sound sure revisions are underway.

We think were very close, Holland America President Gustavo Antorcha said on Thursday.

Holland America and its sister lines, Carnival and Princess, intend to dedicate one ship each to Alaska this summer, he said. Its a fraction of their usual fleet, but it amounts to a total of about 30 week-long cruises.

As the national COVID-19 situation improves, he said, CDC seems willing to make changes to the rules.

Theres still some details to figure out specifically around physical distancing and mask-wearing, Antorcha said.

He checked on some of the ships that would normally be in Alaska now.

But I think its pretty sure, he said.

Waterproof Jacket

In Alaska, dressing in layers is the key. That means you can wear tops, making air layers in between. This creates a specific effect to keep you warm. You do not need to wear a thick and heavy jacket. This way makes you more comfortable and relaxing. On top of the layers, put a waterproof jacket on. If you can add windproof effect, that can be the best. This way, even its rain, the jacket will keep you dry and protect you from the chilly wind.

lightweight windbreaker / Slicker

If you are looking for something for outdoor activities, a light-weight or thin slicker is handy. It keeps you warm. If it is hot, you can take it off and put it into your rucksack. If its waterproofed, it keeps you dry. You can make the layers inside and cover them by the slicker on top. This is the best to keep you warm and comfortable.

Fleece

So what is best for the layers? Fleece can be the best item to make the mid-layer in Alaska. Its just comfortable and light. It does not absorb water and keeps you dry. If it is sunny and in the mid-summer, you do not need a mid-weight waterproof jacket. Fleece is an alternative to a sweater but is light-weight and comfortable.

Bottom layer

Keep warm. Thermal underwear is a must item. Its a type of clothing you can put under a fleece. This is a special material to protect against the cold. The best fabric is merino wool or silk. Its ultra-lightweight and flexible. You can make further layers by wearing one more thermal underwear.

How Much Should You Pay For An Alaskan Cruise

Just like airfare, it can sometimes by a major headaches to know if youre getting a good deal on your cruise fare or not. With seven different cruise lines sailing from Seattle on Alaskan adventures, prices range from a few hundred bucks to several thousand. Add in promotions and specials that run at various times, and the fact that fares can change at any moment, and you have a recipe for anxiety.

Thats why weve put together the chart below. We looked at every 7-day Alaskan cruise sailing from Seattle from every cruise line.

Prices shown are per person and dont include taxes and fees.

As you can see, prices can vary dramatically, depending on the cruise line and your accommodation level. If you are looking for a budget cruise, then expect to pay $700-800 per person for an interior room for a 7-day cruise. Keep in mind that that taxes and port fees will add to that total. If you prefer to cruise in a balcony room, then the best price you will see is $1,100-1,300 per person.

Any rates below these prices should be considered a fantastic deal.

Why Cruise To Alaska

The staggering natural beauty of Alaska is impossible to ignore. Its hard to believe so many unique cruise ports are contained in a single state, but a voyage to Alaska by ship unfolds rugged mountainscapes peppered with wildlife and tiny, eclectic towns founded by gold prospectors.

Alaska cruises blend a mix of port calls with spectacular scenic sailing through Glacier Bay National Park or through other routes that also hold calving glaciers and potential whale sightings. The experience of watching the scenery from your cruise ship is just as rich as the stops it makes along the way.

In fact, many sites in Alaska including its capital, Juneau are only accessible by air or sea, making a cruise one of the best ways to explore the Last Frontier.

To make sure visitors by cruise ship don’t miss the sprawling interior of the state, nearly every cruise line offers a variety of tours that can be added before or after your cruise. The most popular extensions include a visit to Denali National Park & Preserve.

On some Alaska itineraries, American citizens might not even need a passport .

How To Find The Cheapest Alaskan Cruise Deals

Sail Early in the SeasonThe Alaskan cruising season is short usually only five months long. Running from May through September, your opportunities to sail are limited, although there are a number of ships sailing at any given time.

If you want to save the most, look for cruises that sail in May. These trips early in the season are before the busier summer travel season. That means the pool of available passengers is smaller. In order to fill the ships, cruise lines slash prices. A cruise departing in May can be hundreds of dollars less than the same trip leaving in July.

Sail Late in the SeasonDidnt we just say to sail early in the season to save? Well, the same logic applies to sailing late. If you can wait until September, cruise fares to Alaska are much cheaper. With school back in session, the summer season largely over, and the bulk of the sailing season already past, you can find deals that are hundreds of dollars less than sailing just a few weeks earlier.

Sail One-Way or from Different PortsMost cruises sail round-trip, departing ports like Vancouver or Seattle. But if you look around, you can find one-way trips or that that depart from one port and let passengers off in another . Since these cruises are less convenient for most passengers, they tend to be cheaper.

Sites like AvoyaTravel.com or Orbitz allow you to search by cruise lines, destination, dates, and more to find the trip that matches your schedule and budget.

“The ability of a small boat to maneuver into hidden places makes for an unforgettable experience.” Patricia G, Park Ridge, IL

This was perfect for us! Like everyone we met on board, we would not consider a cruise with thousands to be a vacation. We made friends each night in the lounge and it felt like a dinner party. Where Youll Spend Money On A Cruise

Think that the cost of a cruise is simply the fare that you pay to get on the ship? While that makes up the lions share of your spending, theres a lot more that goes into the cost of your vacation.

Cruise FareOf course, when most people think of the cost of a cruise, they are thinking mainly of the price of the cruise fare. This fare is what the cruise line charges for you to sail on the ship. Cruise fare includes your cabin, meals, entertainment on the ship, and access to pools, lounges and more.

What it doesnt include are the extras like drinks, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, gambling and other things bought on board.

What you pay for your fare can vary widely. Factors that go into the price include the type of cabin you choose, length of cruise, when you sail, and even the ship and cruise line you sail.

Short cruises on budget cruise lines can run as little as a few hundred dollars, while long luxury trips can run well into the thousands of dollars per person.

Onboard SpendingThink youre done spending money after you buy your cruise fare? Think again. Once on the ship there are lots of extras that you will likely want to purchase that add to the cost of your cruise.

Onboard spending is a wide umbrella. It includes everything from money spent gambling in the casino to alcohol, specialty restaurants, cruise line shore excursions, and even the souvenirs you buy in the gift shop.
