Passenger Jumps Overboard From Carnival Cruise Line’s Ship Mardi Gras

A 43-year-old man jumped off a CCL-Carnival Cruise Line ship into the Atlantic off the coast of Florida Saturday morning, April 16, officials said.

The US CG deployed a pair of patrol boats and an airplane in order to search for the unidentified passenger, whose jump had shaken vacationers screaming on the deck.

The man plunged from the cruise ship just after midnight, ~55 miles east of Port Canaveral , according to the military/Carnival officials.

A passenger on the liner reported that people were scrambling on the deck early Saturday morning as officials on Carnival Mardi Gras and nearby ship Carnival Elation began to search for the overboard man.

Carnival Mardi Gras had departed from Grand Turk Island and was scheduled to finish her route to the port as the search resumed.

The accident was the 3rd of its kind to befall Carnival in the past 3 months.

In February a woman jumped to death off Carnival Valor into the Gulf of Mexico to elude security after an altercation in a hot tub.

missing persons

So just how common is it for a person to fall or jump overboard on a cruise ship? According to the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health, 58 passengers and 14 crew members died from falling overboard on cruise ships between 2001 and 2019. Over the same period, 55 passengers and five crew died after jumping off vessels in suspected suicides.

This year alone has seen a few overboard incidences already. In February, a 32-year-old woman reportedly jumped overboard from the Carnival Valor off the Louisiana coast, and in March, a man jumped overboard from the Carnival Horizon about two hours after the ship departed from Turks and Caicos.

Will My Ship Be Delayed If A Passenger Goes Overboard

A search and rescue operation does take some time, so it’s likely that you might lose some time in port or need to make a detour. The ship will do everything in its power to make sure other passengers make their flights home, if the delay will alter debarkation.

How Do Cruise Passengers Fall Off Ships

Most people do not “fall” off ships, as railings are purposefully built high enough to prevent accidents. The ship’s security cameras frequently indicate evidence that man overboard situations are intentional.

While suicide at sea isn’t a common occurrence, it does happen. Usually it takes place at night, after a domestic disturbance or excessive alcohol consumption. Passengers either jump from their cabin balcony or from a high deck on the ship.

If I’m On A Cruise Ship Will I Know If A Fellow Passenger Has Fallen Overboard

Probably. For one thing, the ship will issue an emergency broadcast to muster its crew. Among the International Flags and Pennants used for maritime signaling, the flag for “O” or “Oscar” indicates man overboard when flown alone. Some vessels have a specific man overboard flagpole where this code flag is flown.

Related:

You might hear “Oscar Oscar Oscar” or “Code Oscar” announced to alert the crew. The code “Mr. Mob” may also be used, MOB being the abbreviation and accepted maritime acronym for man overboard.

Second, the cruise ship will turn around as soon as possible to reach the area where the person landed in the water. When a passenger fell off Oasis of the Seas in November 2015, the ship came to a stop in six minutes, traveling almost a mile from the site before it could turn around. As a passenger, you might feel the ship’s movements as it performs these maneuvers.

Third, if you are out on deck or have a balcony cabin on the side of the ship where the emergency responders are searching, you will likely see lights sweeping the area.

Finally, the captain will typically make an announcement the next day to inform passengers of any itinerary changes or delays. In some situations, a larger meeting will be held to give people information and tamp down rumors.

A man jumped overboard on a Carnival cruise headed for Florida … and so far no sign of him.

A passenger on the boat tells TMZ … she was on deck 7 early Saturday morning when 2 teens came running past her in a panic. She told them to slow down so they wouldn’t hurt themselves, and that’s when they screamed someone had gone overboard.

There was pandemonium on the ship by some … others thought it was a joke, until security jumped to the ready and began a frantic search.

We’re told the Coast Guard was called in and they blasted bright lights onto the dark sea and went on the hunt. The cruise line stayed to help in the search, but nothing turned up.

The ship then headed for its destination — Port Canaveral, Florida and the Coast Guard continued searching.

A Carnival spokesperson tells TMZ the man jumped off the ship. We do know he’s an adult who was on the ship with his family.

Guest services thought they were joking at first — but then sent security to the area where the man had fallen overboard.

Security confirmed he had gone overboard and the coast guard was called in.

Do People Always Die When They Go Overboard

No. Survival rates depend on several factors, including whether the person was injured by impact with the water or part of the ship on the way down and how quickly the person can be rescued by the cruise ship or Coast Guard. Many times, a person going overboard is dead by the time he or she reaches the water.

Wind and weather factors play a role if the seas are rough, it not only makes it difficult for a person to swim, it’s tough for emergency staff to find them in the water. Other factors include the temperature of the sea hypothermia can begin to set in when the water is less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
