Taking Tours From Cruise Ships

What seems like a major disadvantage of taking a cruise ship to travel around Iceland is the limited amount of time you get at each stop if you make port in Akureyri on morning, for example, you may only have until evening before your departure. This restraint makes many guests fear booking tours, worrying they may not get back to the ship in time.

Thankfully, all around the country, there are tour operators who organise excursions specifically tailored to those travelling by cruise ship. Most of these pick you up from the port soon after your arrival, to minimise your time waiting around and prevent any confusion finding a departure spot in an unfamiliar town, and drop you back off at the same location in good time.

An advantage of such tours is that all the guests are picked up and dropped off in the same location, meaning your time isnt cut into by your guide travelling to multiple hotels and hostels.

These excursions are incredibly diverse. If you are fascinated by history and culture, and want to learn in-depth about the regions you travel to, this tour from Akureyris port will immerse you deep into the stories of North Iceland. Those who would rather spend their time docked in Akureyri making the most of the countrys adventure opportunities could instead book this rafting tour.

Ive Received My Covid

Entry into Iceland is possible after receiving the second vaccination or with Janssen/ Johnson & Johnson after the first dose. FROM 1 JULY – certificate is valid when 14 days have passed from the second dose .

– Detailed vaccine certification can be found on the Icelandic Health Authority’s website.

The above named entry requirements are valid for all travelers arriving in Iceland until 29th June 2021.

Help Exact Location Of Cruise Port

Holland America told me that the Rotterdam will be docking at the Midbakki pier on July 22, 2017. I reserved a Blue Lagoon tour from Reykjavik Excursions. They will do a pick up at Skarfabkki pier or Sundabakki Pier. Being a large area in the port area, I asked Reykjavik to give me an exact location at Sundabakki. Their answer was that they are not able to. If so, I can see that I may easily miss the pickup bus just location for it.

1.Where exactly is Midbakki pier? Is it the same as Korngardur Pier?

2. How far are these two piers to the pick up locations at Sundabakki or Skarfabakki?

3. Port areas are confusing and if Reykjavik indefinite answer as to where to find the pickup bus, perhaps I should take a similar ship tour from Holland America?

Iceland Lifestyle And Culture

Reykjavik Cruise Port Review | Shore Excursions Guide

Icelanders have a profound relationship with their land. Despite the countrys evocative name, glaciers cover only about 11 percent of the nation. And Icelands natural geology has provided geothermal power for the fuel-starved island. Iceland has been able to make use of its vast thermal energy and waterways to become one of the most renewable energypowered nations in the world.

The isolation brought about by Icelands remote location has infused the people with an unwavering sense of independence. In the least populated European nation, with about 332,000 residents, self-reliance and determination are especially prized characteristics.

While the sea serves as a natural border, it also provides Icelanders with a ready supply of seafood. The commercial fishing industry is an important part of the economy. Beginning in the mid20th century, territorial disputes with Great Britain over fishing rights led to a series of intense negotiations known as the Cod Wars.

With no outside influence, the Icelandic language has remained strikingly similar to the Norwegian tongue spoken by the first settlers. Discussions over dinner sound much the same as they did in the 8th century, though the topics have changed.

The Lutheran Church of Iceland counts the most adherents, and it serves as the state church. The majority of citizens are of Nordic and Gaelic ancestry.

Stroll The Streets Of Downtown Reykjavik

If your cruise ship is docking at the Skarfabakki terminal, the Downtown Reykjavik area will be about a 45-minute walk. You could certainly meander your way along the waterfront or simply take a taxi into town. A taxi ran us about $30 USD at the time of this posting. Most cruise lines will also offer shuttle service, which was $11 one-way for each person on our recent Celebrity cruise.

Once in the Downtown area, there are certainly a few stops that you wont want to miss. The Sun Voyager sculpture is a popular photo stop along the water. Located very nearby is the Harpa concert hall. Its unique design and brightly colored glass definitely makes this landmark worthy of a visit as well. Continuing further into town, you can wander the main shopping street of Laugavegur lined with stores, restaurants, and bars. You will also want to pay a visit to the Hallgrimskirkja Church, the unique architecture of the building is worth the trip alone but be sure to also take the elevator to the top for magnificent views of the area . Free guided walking tours of the city are available.

Why Travel By Cruise Ship To Iceland

Photo from 10 Day Cruise Around Iceland by Sea

Some people are simply terrified of flying.

Regardless of the statistics, the assurances, the rarity of accidents, these prospective travellers are unable to make the mental leap necessary to sit comfortably at 40,000 FT. Ocean travel, whilst no doubt prolonged, makes more logical sense for those with aviophobia arguably, it enriches the travel experience entirely, allowing one to spend more time luxuriating in the wealth of amenities found on modern day cruise ships.

Consider the differences between travelling by plane or boat air travel sees guests hauling heavy luggage, dealing with parking fees, endless airport queuesthough, not at KEF, I might addcramped, cattle-class seats, sub-par meals and expensive snacks and drinks.

Cruise ship passengers have room to stretch their legs, walk the deck, breathe in that fresh ocean air, bounce with waves. They have the chance to take a dip in the pool, sample bars and restaurants, shop, mini-golf and even take in a live show.

In short, there can be no arguing air travels efficiency, but it does, in many ways, come up wanting when it comes to that old idiom of travel, The journey is the destination.

Even around Reykjavík, youll be exposed to magnificent landscapes, such as the barren, volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula, contrasting dramatically with the nearby verdant fjord of Hvalfjörður.

The Harbours Of Reykjavik

Cruise Ships Cleared to Return to San Francisco

Icelands capital city is the heart of the country, central to the tour industry and a cultural, historical hub with a wealth of activities on offer. It has two main harbours, the Old Harbour, or Miðbakki, and the New Harbour, or Skarfabakki, which in turn have several quays that your cruise ship may dock at.

Most cruise ship passengers arrive at Skarfabakki, due to its much greater size, which allows it to accommodate enormous vessels. Though slightly out of town, the centre can still be easily reached by a forty-minute walk along the beautiful coastline, or via a short and convenient bus ride. The port is also close to popular attractions such as the Laugardalslaug swimming pool and the Family Park and Zoo.

Tour operators that tailor to cruise ships will pick you up from the meeting point here. Sundabakki and Korngarður are examples of quays at Skarfabakki.

Miðbakki is less frequently stopped at by cruise ships, but some do still arrive here. The area is primarily a private marina and the departure point for many tours such as whale and puffin watching. It is located right by the city centre.

Many tour operators do not offer direct pick-up from this harbour but will do from the nearby hotels, just a short walk away. Grófarbakki and Faxagarður are examples of quays at the Old Harbour.
