Even the worlds most luxurious cruise ship isnt safe.

The World, the planets largest luxury residential ship, has put itself out of service for more than two months amid ongoing fears of the spread of the coronavirus, proving that even the decadently rich are not immune to the fallout from the global pandemic. By Tuesday, March 17, all residents and guests are mandated to leave their residences aboard the ship.

The 644-foot-long ship operated by ROW management, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had criss-crossed the globe 365 days a year for 18 years, until now. The ship has 165 apartments, and residents have to have assets north of $10 million to buy one. The smallest, a 260-square-foot studio, costs about $2 million, while the largest, at 3,500 square feet, costs closer to $15 million. Maintenance fees add as much as $900,000 a year.

What do you get for that? A glorified and exclusive cruise shipthough The World shies away from that namewith six restaurants, ranging from East, which has eclectic Asian delights, to Tides, a Mediterranean spot with Northern Italian flair. Want to cook in your private, fully-equipped kitchen? Stop at Fredys Deli for local produce from the ports visited. And to complement it all, theres a 12,000-bottle wine collection.

    Safer Than Main Street

The largest cruise ship in the world is now based in Miami

At the start of the pandemic, cruise lines knew they needed to do more than just about anyone to give passengers confidence cruise ships were not only safe, but one of the best options out there.

One of the leaders in this endeavor has been Richard Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, who has talked a lot about his company’s work to make cruise ships safe from Covid.

“We believe we can make it so you are safer on a ship than on Main Street.”

Cruise ships can control our sanitation, including air filtration, and also establish strict protocols. According to Fain, this makes ships safer than shore based alternatives.

“Unlike almost any other place you can think of whether its restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues … we control the environment.”

A playground for the ultrarich, sure, but its also a hotbed for COVID-19. Since the coronavirus began to spread earlier this year, cruise ships have been a breeding ground for the disease, and during that time The World has cruised through Asia, stopping in the Philippines, Indonesia and various Pacific islands before making its way to Australia. Four cruise ships have had to delay docking over coronavirus concerns, including the Diamond Princess, on which 700 people contracted the disease, with six dying.

The CDC has recommended people avoid cruise ships, and certain cruise stocks have sunk more than 50% since the beginning of March. With hundreds, if not thousands, of people in close quarters, its no surprise the virus has been able to spread quickly on board these ships.
