Auto Lane Changing! 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Super Cruise review

But its real party trick is its ability to sense itself closing in on a slow coach, look to another highway lane for safe empty space, and then pass that car without any input from the driver. In sequence, the message Looking for an opening appears on the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a vibration is felt through the seat under the drivers left leg, and the truck activates its turn signal to safely change lanes. It repeats these tasks giving the drivers right leg a buzz this time after overtaking the slowpoke to move back into the original lane and safely complete the pass.

Significance Of The Denali Trim Level

It is interesting to note how Super Crusie will only be available for the Denali trim . In GMCs product lineup, the Denali is at the top of the mountain. Denali buyers do pay a premium but can expect a multitude of features in return. GMC Denali trucks boast a fancy interior with open-pore ash wood, brushed aluminum trim, and perforated leather seats, a 15-inch multi-color heads-up display, 22-inch wheels, and GMCs exclusive six-function tailgate.

Powertrain choices for the Denali include three different engines loyal GM truck buyers will instantly recognize. The 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines, both with Dynamic Fuel Management, are GMC Sierra mainstays. The third engine is the relatively new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel, a powertrain option customers have wanted to see GM offer for quite some time .

Given the high position of the Denali trim level, the long list of available features, and Sierras overall importance to the GMC brand, it makes logical sense that Super Cruise would debut on the Sierra Denali first. However, we can also see how Super Cruise could compliment other future GMC vehicles, like the forthcoming Hummer EV. In so many words, Super Cruise is a fitting addition to any feature-rich GMC vehicle.

You Probably Cant Get Super Cruise On A 2022 Gmc Sierra 1500

We just attended the preview for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with the refreshed interior and updated tech. And the tl dr version of our review is: We liked it. But we recently learned that one of the new additions for 2022 might not actually be available: Super Cruise.

Heres the thing, we are still experiencing supply chain issues from the early days of Covid-19 lockdowns, not to mention the fact that the precious microchips that power things like Super Cruise were allocated to other industries during the pandemic. Now, automakers are scrambling to get this chips just as suppliers are scrambling to pump them out. But from everything weve read from industry analysts, things wont get back to normal until mid-2023 at the earliest.

Gmc Sierra To Receive Hands

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will arrive this fall with an impressive array of new features including advanced technology. Although we dont have all of the details about the 2022 GMC Sierra just yet, we do know that it will receive GMs impressive hands-free Super Cruise system.

If you have never experienced the Super Cruise system, you are in for a treat. Super Cruise technology is a system designed to provide the driver with hands-free capability meaning that it can drive the vehicle for you and as long as you keep your attention focused forward, you dont have to have your hands on the wheel. This system is therefore more advanced that traditional driver assistance systems.

As a matter of fact, the experts will tell you that GMs Super Cruise is one of the most advanced autonomous driving features on the market and that it rivals Teslas AutoPilot.

Super Cruise was the first true hands-free driver assistance system. It uses LiDAR generated map data to map out hundreds of thousands of kilometres of new roads all over North America. When on these roads, the Super Cruise system can take over for the driver, controlling steering and braking as well as accelerations while you have your hands on your lap.

In the 2022 GMC Sierra, Super Cruise will have the ability to drive the vehicle autonomously even when towing a trailer. This is a first for the Super Cruise system. The system also offers an automated lane change feature.

Super Cruise Still Works Great And Is Now More Capable

Although the updated late-model year 2022 GMC Sierra is still a little ways off , we’ve had an opportunity to try one of its headlining features: Super Cruise. But it’s not quite the Super Cruise you know from the current Cadillac line. The new Sierra will be getting a newer version with two features: the ability to execute lane changes and passes automatically, and the ability to operate with a trailer.

We tried the system at GM’s proving grounds in Milford, Mich., and our test vehicles were 2022 Sierra prototypes. Though the trucks themselves are early examples with features not finalized, GMC representatives said the Super Cruise system is pretty much finished. The system uses close and long-range radar sensors at the front and a new set of radar sensors at the back, plus the truck’s various cameras. It also utilizes the mapping data that GM has accumulated for the system to ensure it operates on approved roads and has detailed information about where the car is.

The updated Super Cruise will be released on the also-updated GMC Sierra Denali late in the 2022 model year. This new version of Super Cruise will also be available on GMC Hummer EV models.

The Bottom Line On The 2022 Sierra 1500 And Super Cruise

The microchip shortage sucks. So does the pandemic. But this is where we are, and we make do with what we have. GMC has chosen to use the microchips it does have for essential and important features so it can continue to produce trucks. And Super Cruise, which is completely non-essential, didnt make the cut.

Thus, if Super Cruise is on your must-have list when you buy your next truck, youll have to play the waiting game.

So How Does Super Cruise Tow A Trailer

In an effort to demonstrate the 2022 Sierra 1500’s Super Cruise capabilities including the all-new towing feature, GMC invited a small group of journalists to GM’s Milford Proving Grounds to experience the technology firsthand. The new functionality will begin rolling out first for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and then to other Super Cruise installations, including an over-the-air update for the 2021 Cadillac Escalade.

GMC had two camouflaged development trucks available for us to drive on the large 5-mile oval track at Milford. One truck was unladen, while the other had a 20-foot trailer in tow.

Towing with Super Cruise was as uneventful as it was unbelievable. When the system showed that it was ready, we pressed the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel, the center LED strip on the top of the steering wheel turned green, and we were able to let go of the wheel. At 70 mph , the truck tracked straight and true in the lane and around the large curve. The GM engineers riding with us assured us that the truck was smart enough to estimate the trailer’s weight by calculating throttle position versus vehicle speed, and it will adjust following and stopping distances accordingly. We were also assured that any wind- or passing big-rig-induced trailer sway would be quickly and automatically mitigated by the truck’s current trailer sway technology.
