Take A Good Look At The Cruise Ship Deck Plan
Cabin’s deck location is undoubtedly of great importance. Cabins with lower and more central position are more stable. However, “cool cabins” are usually on higher decks, which means spending more money won’t necessarily save you from seasickness.
Stern cabins have the largest balconies. Forward suites provide the same view as from the Navigation Bridge . Some cabins are with limited / obstructed seaview due to lifeboats or other equipment.

If Getting More Than One Cabin How Close Do I Want Them

The age of your traveling companions and the size of your group will affect what type of cabins you want and where theyre located. For a group of old friends traveling together, several cabins near each other may be sufficient, but if youre cruising with older kids, youre probably considering connecting cabins, which are generally less expensive than a suite.
However, sometimes two connecting obstructed view staterooms might be the same price as one suite. The major advantages of two interconnecting rooms over a typical junior suite are the additional bathroom and television. Holland America Line has a variety of interconnecting room options, while Norwegian Cruise Lines selection is more limited families on Princess Cruises will largely have to choose a suite instead.
For some families, cabins across the hall from each other may be a better option giving older kids a sense of their own space, while still being close to their parents.
When price or availability prevents large groups from booking on the same deck, try to book all cabins as close as possible vertically. If they need to be on different decks, I try to keep them around the same staircase or elevator. It can be very hard to connect with people if they are on opposite ends of the ship, says Devine.

What Kind Of Questions Should I Be Asking Myself When Deciding Which Cabin To Choose
The first question you must ask yourself when choosing your cruise ship cabin is “how much can I afford to spend?” Your answer to this will immediately define your choices cabins get more expensive as they get larger or more amenity-laden.
Next, ask yourself what’s important to you. Do you tend toward claustrophobia? Then you’ll need to choose a larger cabin or at least a room with a window. If you do have a budget, would you rather spend the money on a larger cabin but have less left over for onboard expenses? Or, would you rather go for a slightly smaller cabin, but have more to spend onboard or on excursions?
Also, look at where you’re sailing. For example, Alaska is very scenic do you really want to be in an inside cabin? But it’s a bit cold for standing on your balcony, so maybe a window is all you need.

Conventional Diesel Cruise Ship Engine
Today’s direct-drive diesels feature one main advantage – the option to use shaft generator, which is a device using the circular motion of propeller shaft in order to generate the electricity needed for hotel services, like cooking and lighting.
Shaft generators can be used only while the ship is moving with fairly constant cruising speed. This is what the NCL Epic cruise ship engine looks like:

Are Balcony Rooms Worth It On Cruises
If youll make good use of the balcony, its worth paying a little extra. The position of your ship design means that balcony rooms are on higher decks. This implies balcony rooms have better views, especially on river cruises where lower rooms are near to the waterline. If you want the additional area that a balcony provides.
Head Aft For The Best Balconies
If a balcony is a priority for you, youll find some of the best ones at the rear, or aft, of the ship. The aft cabins tend to be quite popular because they provide great views and usually dont have many neighbors.
Pro tip: for the very best rooms, try the corners. The very last port and starboard side rooms on certain decks will sometimes have expanded balconies. Some may even have enough space for a lounger, allowing you to lay out and enjoy the sun from the privacy of your own room. Now thats cruising in style!
However, you need to make sure of the location and double check what else is around the room. Some aft-facing rooms are near exhaust vents and may have an unpleasant aroma, but for the most part, this is not an issue.
Aft balconies typically are a bit longer than balconies on the port and starboard sides of the ship as well. This means you can actually lounge in that lounger with some extra leg room.

Prefabricated Cruise Ship Cabin
On May 24, 2016, a new “Lightweight Composite Cabin” design was unveiled in Southampton, England. The innovation was funded by the UK Government. Involved in the cabin’s designing, engineering, manufacturing and furbishing were the companies Carnival UK , Gurit Ltd , Lloyd’s Register Group Ltd , PE Composites Ltd , Trimline Ltd and the University of Southampton.
The new modular cabin prototype is half the weight of a typical cruise room. It also fully complies with the FTP Code’s requirements . Reducing the ship’s topdecks weight is an important issue for naval architects as the trend for building large-capacity cruise vessels continues. The new module’s halved weight opens up opportunities for adding more passenger rooms to newbuild ships, without adding to the ship’s DWT weight.
Note: The following list of cruise lines cabins includes only CruiseMapper’s largest companies’ fleets and only ocean-going vessels. For all other vessels use the search box at page top.
How Big Was Noahs Ark Compared To A Cruise Ship
According to the Bible , the dimensions of Noahs Ark were: 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width and 30 cubits in height.
A cubit is an ancient measurement of length which is based on the distance from the elbow to the tip of the longest finger. This makes the exact length of a cubit uncertain, but it is most likely to be around 20 inches.
Based on the information in the Bible, we can estimate that Noahs Ark would have been about 510 feet long and 50 feet tall. This means that Noahs Ark was around half the length and one-quarter of the height of the worlds largest cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas, which is 1,184 feet long and 238 feet high.
Noahs Ark would have been similar in size to small luxury expedition cruise ships such as Silverseas Silver Cloud.

In An Inside Cabin Or Oceanview Youll Typically Find The Following:
- Two single beds which convert into a double bed, there are a few ships which have fixed double beds which cannot be separated but the majority are able to be converted.
If you get to your cabin and see that the bed isnt as youd like, just ask your cabin steward and theyll change it for you.
- A sofa bed or Pullman beds. Some inside/oceanview cabins will have a sofa bed but the majority have Pullman beds which come down from the ceiling.
During the day these are tidied away so that you have more space in the cabin. If youd like them to be kept down just ask your cabin steward.
- A bathroom. All cabins have their own private bathrooms which include, at a minimum, a shower, a toilet, and a sink. The size of bathrooms can vary quite dramatically but theyre usually quite small. They are on a ship after all!
That said, as long as they are clean and functional I think thats all that you need. The bathrooms are located furthest into the ship and it would be very strange for you to find a window in a cruise ship bathroom.
There is one exception to the standard layout of the cabin bathroom. Onboard the Norwegian Epic you actually have a shower on one side and the toilet on the other, the sink is in the main room and theres a curtain to protect your privacy. This is not typical but an interesting example.

What You Do In Port
Big ships sell shore excursions for the masses. Even on tours focused on small groups, passengers at the pier face crowds trying to find the correct bus or guide. At ports where big ships cannot dock, passengers tender to get ashore, and you may have delays. Going off on your own may involve jostling for a cab or even waiting in line to leave the ship and pier area. With thousands of people coming off the ship, some ports will have more cruise passengers in town than residents. Your stay in port may be limited by the logistics of moving the crowd.
Small ships eliminate the crowd factor. Guests do relaxed exploring on their own or join curated small group excursions with local guides, such as a walking tour through medieval alleyways, a biking trek in the countryside, or visiting markets and food producers . Even at bucket list attractions such as the ancient city of Ephesus in Turkey you will find your small ship line has considered ways to help you avoid the masses. Unrushed itineraries, including more late-night and even overnight stays, allow time to delve into local culture and nightlife a deeper experience than just a quick look at a destinations top attractions.
On Windstars sailing and all-suite yachts, onboard marinas afford additional opportunity to borrow kayaks, paddleboards, and other equipment to do your own coastal exploring in select places.
Offers Plenty Of Accommodation
When it comes to accommodation, the Norwegian Cruise Line provides one of the bests out there. With the Norwegian Joy, you can enjoy an exclusive around-the-clock butler service plus a private sundeck when you book The Haven suites.
However, if youre on a budget and good with just the usual rooms, you can choose between balcony or oceanview staterooms. There are also suites available for booking. You may also want the Concierge Class, which includes a concierge service, of course, if you need one.

Royal Caribbean Stateroom Basics
Before we breakdown the types of cabins on a Royal Caribbean ship, there is a common distinction that every cabin has across the fleet.
All rooms on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship come with a bed, private bathroom, safe, shower, television, vanity area and closet.
Beyond that, the room you select may offer more amenities, but you should know that a cabin has some basics that you do not have to be concerned about missing out on.
I’m Traveling With My Kids Can We All Stay In One Cabin
Not all cabins can accommodate more than two people, so you’ll need to look for cabins with pulldown beds , convertible sofa beds or a second room. Many ships have designated family cabins in a variety of categories that are larger and designed with families in mind, so they often have more sleeping areas and even 1.5 or two full baths.
Suites, even when not specifically geared to families, often can sleep four or more and may have family-friendly amenities, such as extra space, a second bathroom, separate sleeping and living areas, and priority boarding and debarkation . Another option, rather than squeezing into one cabin or splurging on a suite, is to book two adjoining cabins that interconnect through an interior door.

Best Cruise Suite: Owner’s Suite
Why? There are three Owner’s Suites onboard Oceania Cruises’ and Riviera, and the accommodations are among the most superb at sea. Size counts, for sure, and these measure 2,000 square feet apiece.
Ralph Lauren Home furnishings are featured throughout the large living and dining room as well as the bedroom, which comes with king-sized bed. You’ll also find his-and-her walk-in closets, a grand entryway with an ebony grand piano, and even a media nook with a professional entertainment system. There’s one whirlpool tub in the bathroom, outfitted with Bulgari bath products, and another on the veranda, which also has an outdoor flat-screen television.
What else do we love about Oceania’s Owner’s Suites? Their location. Each suite spans the width of the ship, facing aft, looking over the wake. Perks for Owner’s Suite residents include access to the private Executive Lounge — staffed by a dedicated concierge and featuring complimentary soft drinks, coffees and snacks throughout the day — plus 24-hour butler service and course-by-course, in-suite meal delivery from any onboard restaurant.
The biggest downside of a cruise in an Oceania Owner’s Suite is that you’ll feel so pampered and cosseted indoors, you might well be tempted to miss ports of call and stay onboard.
Plan to Pay: Fares start at $1,700 per person, per night.
