Cruise To Norway From Usa

Don't Miss

No Packing And Unpacking

Exploring Norway – a Winter Road Trip Adventure (Full Travel Documentary)

One of the advantages of a cruise is that you only need to unpack once. Traveling in Norway by car or by train, youd have to stay in many different hotels in order to see the most beautiful places. That means several rounds of unpacking and packing again, with a suitcase which seems to get fuller each time.

On a cruise, however, you can relax knowing that your accommodation and wardrobe will move with you as you tour the country. If you opt to stay in a luxury suite, youll even have a butler on hand to unpack for you.

Also if the weather unexpectedly changes , you can easily adapt to that because you always have your luggage at hand.

Why Miami And Not New York

Norwegian Mega Ship Completes First Cruise to Alaska

No explanation has been given for the extreme change of North American ports, other than fleet redeployment changes. It is likely, however, that because Norwegian Viva is scheduled to set sail from Miami for a single 7-night voyage on December 6, 2023, this ensures the ship is not sailing without guests between New York and Miami.

This may also be a window when the ship could have her official naming ceremony or offer non-revenue sailings to travel partners, members of the media, and various dignitaries prior to beginning passenger sailings from her official winter homeport, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Norwegian Viva will begin sailings from San Juan from December 15, 2023, offering primarily 7-night cruises to Barbados, Antigua, and St. Lucia.

In April 2024, the new ship will return to the Mediterranean for the summer and fall seasons, after which she will return to San Juan to homeport from mid-December 2024 through April 2025.

Norwegian Viva is the second Prima-class ship, with a projected gross tonnage of approximately 142,500 gross tons and the capacity to welcome 3,215 guests at double occupancy. She is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

Four additional Prima-class vessels have already been ordered and are set for delivery in from 2025 to 2027, though shipyard constraints have already delayed the delivery of the third and fourth vessels in the class, even before their construction has begun.

HOW TO TRAVEL NORWAY – Worth Every $

The standard answer to this question is Summer. Particularly from June to August when temperatures are at their warmest.

However, when you sail really depends on what you want to see and do. Unlike most other Arctic cruises, you can take a Norwegian cruise all year-round thanks to Hurtigruten’s Winter itineraries.

Below we discuss the pros and cons of both Summer and Winter. There is no right time, just the right time to suit you.

In the southern fjords temperatures during Summer frequently top 20 degrees celsius . Keep in mind though that rain fall is still fairly high and weather conditions can change suddenly.

You also have a lot more itinerary and ship choices during Summer as only Hurtigruten offer Winter itineraries.

Winter

Winter is a great option for people wanting to witness the Northern Lights.

With Hurtigruten offering cruises all through Winter, Norway is the best destination on earth to see the Northern Lights by ship! For a detailed page, .

Winter is also far less crowded and there are many cruise deals available. However, temperatures are cold and you’ll need to wrap up.

Et tu, Carnival Cruise Line?

The worlds second largest cruise operator is joining its smaller competitors Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line in sharply hiking the automatic service charges it adds to customer bills for 2023.

In a notice sent to booked passengers, the Miami-based cruise giant said it would raise the automatic gratuity fee it levies on passengers by more than 10% to $16 per person per day for those staying in most cabins.

It also said it planned an unusually sharp hike to the amount it charges for onboard Wi-Fi, with the cost of single-device plans soaring as much as 25%.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPGs cruise newsletter.

The price hikes for the service and Wi-Fi fees will take effect on April 1 and Jan. 16, respectively.

The current gratuity rate at Carnival is $14.50 for passengers in standard cabins and $16.50 for passengers in suites.

The new rates taking effect on April 1 will be $16 per person per day for standard cabins and $18 for passengers in suites.

With the increase, a family of four in a typical cabin will pay nearly $450 in automatic gratuities on a seven-night cruise one of the higher levies in the business.

Another sister brand to Carnival, Holland America, also plans a service charge increase in the coming weeks.

Types Of Cruise Ships

Which ship you choose to sail on will greatly impact your Norwegian cruise experience.

There are several types of ships that offer the same itineraries and knowing what type of ship will offer what is very important.

For example, large ships offer more luxuries, but are unable to visit as many inlets due to their size.

Below we have given a little more detail on what to look out for when deciding on your cruise ship.

Expedition Ships

Expedition-style ships are for the people with an adventurous spirit.

Very few expedition ships solely visit Norway. Most of these style ships are offered on a combination stye itinerary such as Norway and Svalbard or Scotland and Norway.

The MS Expedition offers several Norway based options in May, and Hurtigruten’s MS Lofoten sails all year-round. But other than that, you’ll need to book a combination itinerary.

If you do, expect an epic experience, with guided lectures, daily zodiac trips, wildlife tours and optional activities such as dog sledding, hiking, kayaking and camping.

Do not expect pools, cinemas onboard these vessels. These cruises take around 150 passengers. This is small compared to the more popular 2-5,000 passenger cruises.

These cruises are often more expensive than the larger cruises due to their excursions and guidance.

Luxury Cruises

Far more popular throughout Norway is what we would call Luxury or Main-line cruise ships.

Please note that most of these cruise lines will not sail to Northern Norway.

What Cruise Lines Go To Norway

The main cruise liners that sail up and down the Norwegian coast are a fleet of 11 Hurtigruten ships. Every day a Hurtigruten cruise departs from Bergen, Norways Gateway to the Fjords, to begin its 7-day voyage north to Kirkenes. Its also possible to reverse the journey, or take a round trip, if you prefer.

Youre sure to see plenty of incredible places on your journey as the Hurtigruten stops at 34 ports on its route. When docking for more than 30 minutes, youll have the opportunity to hop off and explore your surroundings.

Youll also have a range of optional shore excursions to choose from, including wildlife-watching experiences and city-sightseeing tours.

The Hurtigruten ships werent initially intended for leisure purposes though. Their original function was to make life easier for the people who lived along the coast by transporting goods and mail. Its because of this that taking the Hurtigruten is often referred to as going on a mail boat cruise.

Travelling like this gives you a unique glimpse into the Norwegian way of life. Plus, youll be able to soak up views of enchanting islands, UNESCO-listed fjords and picturesque villages as you go.

The cost of a Norway cruise varies depending on a few things, including:

  • The length of your trip
  • The time of year that youre travelling
  • The standard of accommodation youd like
