What Are The Cruise Ports In Florida

Don't Miss

Dont Assume That Guys Offering Taxi Service Mean Private Rides

Norwegian Cruise Line threatens to leave Florida ports over vaccine passport ban, report says

Heres a disembarkation tip that is particularly relevant for Florida cruise ports. If you have not pre-arranged a ride to the airport, either through the cruise line or a third-party service, you will step outside looking for a taxi. Now in many large cities, you will often find legitimate car service guys hanging around asking people if they want rides because something happened to their original fare.

If you step outside and get approached by someone who otherwise looks legitimate, be sure to ask if it is a private ride or a group taxi. Oftentimes, the term taxi may be used loosely, and its actually a shuttle van.

We missed a plane with this mistake. We had done the early morning walk off the ship so that we could catch an early flight in Miami. They loaded all of our luggage into the cargo trailer. We stepped into a van and there was already one guy in it. That was fine since we were all going to the airport. But what we did not realize was that the driver would proceed to drive by several other terminals looking for additional fares. And, since we werent full, the driver made a whole other loop around the port for a second try.

Turns out that the guy who first approached us worked for a shuttle company. And the shuttle company had someone stationed at each terminal to solicit folks and hustle them into the van. Although this team of folks was moving rather efficiently, it still added an extra 20-30 minutes that we hadnt expected.

Smaller Florida Cruise Ports

And, to complete the list, we should also mention that Florida hosts two smaller cruise ports with much more limited service. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Carnival Cruise lines had one ship sailing from the Jacksonville cruise port. And, the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line had short two-night cruises from the Palm Beach cruise port to the Bahamas.

The Jacksonville Airport is about 12 miles from the Jacksonville cruise port. The closest alternative city would be Orlando, where the airport is about 2 1/2 hours away from the Jacksonville port. Likewise, the Palm Beach International Airport is about 12 miles to the Palm Beach cruise port. But, since it is much farther south than Jacksonville, it is also readily accessible from Miami, which is about an 1 1/2 hour drive, and Fort Lauderdale, which is about an hour and 10 minutes.

Port Miami: Floridas Biggest Cruise Port

Cruise giant Norwegian threatens to skip Florida’s ports

Now that weve talked about the competition, lets talk about Port Miami. Port Miami is located on Dodge Island, just east of the spectacular skyline of downtown Miami and just south of South Beach.

Port Miami boasts nine cruise terminals that process more than 5.5 million passengers a year! In addition, the port is convenient for cruisers, as it is close to popular destinations like The Bahamas, Panama, Key West, and Mexico.

One of the most significant benefits of sailing from Port Miami is the convenience of the port.

Port Miami is connected to the Miami International Airport via a tunnel, so passengers flying into Florida to embark on their cruises can conveniently access the seaport without having to drive a long distance. This convenience, plus the Ports long history of hosting cruise lines, has given Port Miami a reputation as the cruise capital of the world.

Port Miami can also handle very large cruise vessels. For example, Royal Caribbeans vessel Wonder of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, only slightly larger than her sister vessel Symphony of the Seas. Symphony of the Seas regularly sails from Port Miami, as do other massive cruise vessels carrying thousands and thousands of happy cruisers.

Phenomenal Florida Fun Fact: Port Miami handles massive shipping vessels as well as cruise ships. The largest merchant ship ever to dock in Port Miami was the CMA CGM Argentina, which is more than 1,200 feet long and can hold 15,072 shipping containers.

Do You Need A Passport To Go On A Cruise To The Bahamas

US Citizens do not need a passport to travel to the Bahamas on a cruise ship! Closed-loop cruises that is, cruises that begin and end at the same port dont require citizens to bring a passport.

You will need to provide the cruise line with proof of citizenship in the form of a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID, but you dont need a passport. However, if you have a passport, you certainly may use that to travel on a cruise ship.

San Francisco California Us Cruise Port

Few people would think of San Francisco as a cruise port city. And rightfully so, as many more visitors arrive by air, road, train or other means. The big commercial port of the area is across the bay in Oakland.

However, when considering the United States cruise ports map, ships sailing the western coastline of North America dock at one of the cruise terminals along Embarcadero street every summer. One could spend the day just on the piers visiting the Fishermans Wharf area for all sorts of entertainment: sailing the bay, visiting Alcatraz island, dining etc.

Parking is convenient but expensive in San Francisco so its best to take a ride share, public transit or have someone drop you off at the terminal. There are bicycle rickshaws along the piers so its easy go between the piers and attractions.

Some of the most popular things to see in the city are the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Palace of Fine Arts, Fishermans Wharf, Coit Tower, The Seven Sister, Nob Hill, SFMOMA, Yerba Buena gardens, the Missions etc. The list goes on and on.

Besides the famous landmarks, one can visit the lesser known hidden gems of the community such as beautiful mosaic steps and sunset sail in San Francisco Bay.

For the chocolate lovers Ghirardelli Square is an absolute must. And its close to the piers.
