Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Norway is the krone . Norway is moving gradually toward being a cash-free society, so debit and credit cards are commonly accepted here, unlike some other parts of Europe. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are widely used. ATMs in Norway are called mini banks, so look out for that if youre looking for a place to withdraw a little cash or check your balance. Dont worry about tipping your taxi driver or restaurant server, as the tip is usually already included in a service charge on your bill. When you pay with a credit card in Norway, there will usually be a blank line for leaving a tip if you wish to tip additionally.

Village Life And The Nature Of The Fjord

Lødingen is a village and administrative center on the southwestern shore of Hinnøya, with a population of under 2,000. Our ships used to visit this port on one of our earlier coastal routes. Returning here is a kind of like a homecoming for us.

Well dock at around midday, using Lødingen as a base for a few hours to explore more of Hinnøya island, Norways largest island south of Svalbard. Wander the streets near the port and admire the traditional red fishing huts, or rorbuer, that line the shore. As you walk, youll likely notice the calm atmosphere of village life.

The highlight of this visit is definitely the breathtaking fjords and mountains that have made the Norwegian coast so famous. Gullesfjord branches off of Andfjord and cuts into the north side of Hinnøya, bordered by pristine mountain ranges. The area is popular among campers, who stay on the campsite or in cabins and fish for cod in the fjord during winter.

One optional excursion is a boat safari that brings you closer to the fjord. Challenge yourself to a hike in the mountains for the reward of majestic panoramas of the surrounding land and sea.

DAY 5 : Rørvik

Currency & Best Way To Get Money

Though there are numerous currency exchanges around Bergen, ATMs are plentiful and offer a far better rate of exchange. The biggest concentration of banks and ATMs is around the streets just south and east of the harbor, especially along the major thoroughfare, Olav Kyrres Gate.

Norway is not currently part of the E.U., so they still maintain their currency, the Norwegian Krone . Check www.xe.com for the most up-to-date exchange rate.

Cruise Port Guide Bergen Norway: Docked

In Bergen cruise ships often dock at the Bontelabo or at Skolten pier. These two cruise docks are right next to each other and both of them are about 1 km / half a mile away from the city centre. Most ships do not run a shuttle bus, but check with the front office on board your cruise ship if this will be the case for your call. If you want to reach the city centre you can either walk for approximately 1 km, take the hop on hop off bus, take public transport or take a taxi.

In a very rare occasion your ship will dock at the other side of town. to be redirected to the Bergen Havn website where you can check where your ship will dock. Remember that the Bontelabo and Skolten pier are the cruise docks described here in this cruise port guide. The Festningskaien is actually nearest to bryggen, but not all cruise ships are able to dock here. If you dock at Jekteviken, you will be able to take the free shuttle bus into the city centre.

City Of The Northern Lights

Alta is one of the bigger coastal towns we visit, with a population of over 10,000 people. A particularly famous part of the town is Alta River, one of Norways best salmon rivers. Large salmon are regularly caught here, with some even weighing up to 53 lbs. You wont regret trying fresh grilled salmon in one of the local restaurants.

At 70 degrees north, this town is still far above the Arctic Circle. The area is known for particularly good northern lights visibility, so keep your camera ready. If the skies are clear and the conditions are right, you should be able to snap some amazing shots of the lights dancing above.

You can learn more about this incredible natural light show on a guided tour of the town. The Northern Lights Cathedral even has an exhibition showing how Alta became the epicenter of ground-breaking research of the aurora borealis between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Increased snowfall in the winter allows for some truly authentic Arctic excursions, like dog-sledding. The snow and climate of Alta also creates the perfect conditions to build and maintain the Igloo Hotel, located on the banks of river Alta.

You can tour the worlds northernmost ice hotel, built out of snow and ice every winter and carved with different artistic themes by local sculptors. Head to the hotels ice bar, decorated with handcrafted ice sculptures. Order a drink in an ice glassno ice cubes needed.
