Where Do Mexican Riviera Cruises Begin

Depending on the cruise line, you will embark in either Los Angeles or San Diego. Its important to know your embarkation port so your shuttle or taxi will drop you at the right one.

Los Angeles has two ports: the World Cruise Center and the Long Beach Cruise Terminal . It can take more than an hour to get to either cruise port from LA International Airport .

  • Princess Cruises and Norwegian sail from San Pedro
  • Carnival Cruises sails from Long Beach.

San Diego also has two terminals: the B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal and the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Most cruises depart from the B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal. Both terminals are approximately 10 minutes drive from San Diego International Airport .

These cruise lines sail from San Diego:

  • Carnival Cruise Line.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line.
  • Princess Cruises.

Even if its a 10-minute trip to the terminal, weve experienced enough unforeseen travel delays to recommend arriving a day or two early. You dont want to miss the boat!

Might as well take advantage of your time in these Southern California cities before departing on your cruise.

  • If in LA, pay a visit to Griffith Park or walk along Santa Monica Pier.
  • If in San Diego, visit the famous San Diego Zoo with this skip the line ticket. Or, relax along Black Beach while you watch the locals ride the waves.

About The Mexican Riviera

Princess Cruises ship Royal Princess to sail to Mexican ...

The Mexican Riviera is the Pacific coastline of Mexico. This region is also known as the gem of the Pacific. The ports of call along this picturesque coastline are each unique and special, offering individual characteristics and a hospitable hacienda charm that can only be found in the Mexican Pacific. The most popular ports of call in the Mexican Pacific include Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Ixtapa.

As a general rule, the longer the duration of the cruise, the more ports of call. This is especially true in the Mexican Riviera, where port cities are often situated at considerable distances from one another. With the exception of Ensenada, the Mexican Riviera features warm weather almost every day of the year. Summer hurricanes can affect cruise itineraries, so be sure to check with your cruise line in the event of any weather disturbances.

Best Mexico Cruises For Solo Travelers

Cruising With Carnival On The Mexican Riviera!

Norwegian Cruise Line and solo cruise travel go hand in hand. Norwegians Studio accommodations are standard aboard several of the lines ships.

The staterooms feature full-size beds and separate bath areas plus access to a private Studio Lounge. Unlike travelers sailing alone in double-occupancy accommodations, Norwegian does not charge a single supplement as Studio cabins are specifically designed and priced for solo travelers.

Guests access Norwegian Breakaways Studio stateroom complex on decks 10 and 11 via private keycard access. Each stateroom additionally features a one-way window to the ships corridor and average between 97 and 131 square feet. A handful of the Studios connect so travelers who wish to stay closer can do so while still maintaining privacy.

Ive yet to sail in one of these cabins but multiple colleagues report they are small but comfortable, with pleasing mood lighting adding to the experience. Guests in these staterooms should be comfortable with inside staterooms that provide no sea view, but as some travel agents point out, most travelers in these accommodations often dont spend much time their rooms.

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Joys seven-night Western Caribbean cruises departing round-trip from Miami offer calls at Costa Maya and Cozumel. Norwegian Suns five-night sailings departing round-trip from Orlando also visit Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Norwegian Cruise Line Breakaway

This class of ship has four vessels. The newest of them is Norwegian Encore, followed by its sister ships, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Escape.

One of our favorite features of this class of ship is the Waterfront. This mid-level promenade deck features a variety of restaurants, bars and lounges, and other amenities including shopping and entertainment venues. Among some of the newer additions to this area is the specialty restaurant turned country music venue Q Texas Smokehouse. This area also features many of the other restaurants, such as the lines signature steak house Cagneys.

There is also the Princess favorite, the Sugarcane Mojito Bar. One of the best parts of the Waterfront is that most venues include both indoor and outdoor areas.

The Breakaway-Plus class of ships has some of the most thrilling attractions at sea. Among them are go-kart courses, state of the art laser tag, ropes courses, as well as some of the fastest waterslides. Some of these ships also feature Spice H20, an adults only area with water features, a bar, and private space for those that are 18+.

On Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, there is the Galaxy Pavilion too. This digitally enhanced area is home to interactive attractions, ride simulators, and games that everyone in the family will enjoy.

Best Mexico Cruises For Families

Theres an appreciable degree of crossover between the mega-ship and family cruise categories, pushing Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean into this grouping. However Fun Ships operator Carnival Cruise Line is also at the head of the family-cruise class, both in terms of its clientele and the number of Mexico itineraries the company will offer in 2021 and 2022. Disney Cruise Line is another natural family-market player in Mexico.

As a means of selecting among the major players, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean offer the destinations largest ships, with the aforementioned widest array of activities for guests of all ages. Of course, for some families, theres no substitute for a Disney resort experience, whether on land or at sea, and Mickey does not fail to excite the brands loyal followers.

Disneys largest vessels, 4,000-passenger Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, visit Cozumel on five- and seven-night voyages from Port Canaveral, Florida, while 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder features Cozumel and Progreso on its five-night western Caribbean itineraries sailing from New Orleans, plus Costa Maya on five-night western Caribbean cruises from Galveston, Texas.

As Disney aficionados likely know, the privilege of sailing aboard the S.S. Mickey isnt cheap. Travelers are almost certain to pay substantially more for Disney family cruise than for one with Royal Caribbean, Carnival or Norwegian.

Ports Are Easy Choices

Many Mexican Riviera cruises visit three major ports: Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Its not a stretch to call them The Big Three.

Altogether, these cruises on the west coast visit some combination of 10 different ports of call on the great majority of cruises.. One of them is in California at Catalina Island. The others are in Mexico. Besides Cabo, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, the other ports of call are Ensenada, Manzanillo, La Paz, Loreto, Guaymas and Topolobampo.

Even Panama Canal cruises visit some ports along the Mexican Riviera. Some leave from California, travel down the Mexican and Central America coasts, go through the Panama Canal and travel north through the Caribbean to Florida. Others go in the opposite direction. They often visit one other port in the southern part of the Mexican Riviera at Acapulco.

Cruise lines that visit the Mexican Riviera include Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess and Regent Seven Seas. Although these cruise lines offer some different onboard experiences, they dont offer much variety in the Mexican Riviera ports they visit.

Unlike the Caribbean with nearly a dozen embarkation ports, the cruises usually begin at one of four cruise ports on the California coast. Most of them begin at Los Angeles or the nearby Long Beach. A smaller number start from San Diego and an even smaller number embark from San Francisco. So choosing a port for embarkation is easy.
