Ok But What About Service Animals

As of 2005, cruise liners must allow service animals on board. According to Cruise Talk, The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government.

Many cruises dont even ask for service dog documentation, in fact. While most people are following the rules, some have abused the flexibility.

Cruise Critic posted numerous reports of suspicious service animals. One of their readers wrote: We had a small service dog on our last cruise that was being pushed around in a stroller! She goes on to say, someone came in with their dog in a stroller, wheeled it up to her table and set his food bowl on the table for him to eat alongside her. I am a dog lover, but I think things are going a bit far.

That said, if you do have a legitimate disability and your dog is a helper dog, you can absolutely bring them on a cruise ship. Learn more from US Service Animals site.

Pet Related Services Amenities And Accommodations

Generally, if any kind of travel business allows for pets, they will have policies and services in place to ensure that the animals can be safe and relatively comfortable. However, some cruise lines are more accommodating to animals than others. For example, a truly pet-friendly cruise will provide amenities like baggies to help clean up after dogs, as well as designated areas for animals to play.

That said, when it comes to your animals specific needs, most cruise lines leave the responsibility to you. Most cruises will provide you with information related to items that you must bring with you before you board the ship.

Should I Take My Dog Or Cat On A Cruise

Just because you can take a pet or service animal on a cruise doesnt mean that you should. Your dog isnt going to love the afternoon tea and ballroom dancing on Cunard like you do, and might actually be sad that its spending the majority of its time away from you in the kennel.

We also read an account of a service animal who refused to relieve itself onboard the cruise ship and would only do so in port. That meant that it suffered through an entire sea day without peeing, distressing its owner who truly cared for his canine companion. Imagine if that had been a transatlantic cruise. You never know in advance how an animal will react to living in the artificial setting of a cruise ship.

Animal owners should note that cruise lines, including Cunard, do not offer vet services. Should Fluffy or Fido fall ill onboard, youll have to wait until a port day to find a vet in a foreign country, or hope they can manage until the cruise ends. Do you want to risk your favorite dog or cat in that way?

What Should I Bring For My Pet Or Assistance Animal On A Cruise

Cruisers should provide food and treats, water bowls, leashes, toys and bedding for their pet. . Cunard offers life jackets for small and large animals, but most other companies do not. If Fifi needs a fleet, you gotta pack your bags.

Cruise lines provide a sandbox or mulch area for the service animal to escape to. The pet owner is responsible for cleaning their dog, although the team cleans the rescue box daily. You must notify the cruise lines access department, often within 30 days prior to the cruise, to request an assistance room. Please note that the first aid kit is not located in your cabin or on your private balcony, although the crew will try to place it as close to your accommodation as possible.

A Rhine River Cruise With Your Dog

In Europe itself, one of the most popular cruising options is to take a river cruise. These cruises are available on many rivers, but a Rhine river cruise is the most iconic.

Given how dog-friendly most of the countries are that these river cruises pass through, and that a river cruise doesnt have the same logistical issues when it comes to doggie business as a cruise on the open ocean, its a surprise that dogs arent welcome on more of these cruises. I have only come across one option so far.

These dog-friendly European river cruises are run by 1AVista Reisen, a German company based in Cologne. They operate multiple cruises per year for dogs and their owners aboard the MS Poseidon, in both Germany and the Netherlands. From 2020, they will also offer cruises on the Danube. The cruises are majority German-language, but the crew can provide assistance in English.

Dogs on these cruises arent relegated to kennels, but are permitted to stay with you in your cabin, plus join you in the dining room. Just like the fares for humans are all-inclusive, dogs also have access to unlimited dog treats, plus dog beds and bowls are provided.

On the dog-friendly cruises, a section of the sun deck is converted to a poop deck. Its covered in grass and plants so that dogs can relieve themself any time of day.

For more information, check out the 1AVista Reisen website . Or read this review from Louie Vuitton the Frenchie .

What To Do With You Pet While You Cruise

With cruise ships not allowing pets on the ship, youll need to find other accommodations for Fido or Fluffy while you sail.

For most people, that will mean having a friend stop by your house and feed your dog or cat while youre gone. Or you can kennel your animal with a vet or other company while you are gone. This is usually more expensive, but can be worth it knowing that someone will have an eye on your pet around the clock.

One other solution is kenneling your pet in your port city. Many people opt to drive to the cruise port, and sometimes spend a few days before or after the sailing to extend their vacation. If you are driving, then you can bring your companion along with you for the drive and the stay in the city. Then you can have the kennel take care of your pet the day that you set sail. This has the added advantage that you can pick up your pet right after your cruise instead of having to wait until you get back home.
