Disney Cruise Lines added some additional sailings from San Diego for 2021 including some 2 night sailings.

There had previously been a gap in the Disney Wonder sailing schedule which was thought to be for a 2021 dry dock. However, with the lack of sailings in 2020 it is sensible that this time is used for revenue producing sailings.

The good thing is that this means there is now more choice of Disney Cruise sailings from San Diego,

What About Evening Entertainment

Princess Cruises introduced Movies Under the Stars, films shown on deck while you relax in a lounge chair, tucked up in a blanket. Carnival and other lines also offer outdoor movies. Disney wows kids and adults with its first-run movies in its indoor theater and its Disney-themed stage shows.

Older kids like the Blue Man Group on Norwegian Epic, as well as the Broadway-style hits playing aboard RCI. Mamma Mia will debut on new ship Quantum of the Seas in fall 2014. Hairspray plays to applause on the Oasis of the Seas, Chicago, the Musical draws crowds on Allure of the Seas, and Saturday Night Fever brings back memories on Liberty of the Seas.

Does Your Young Child Have A Character Crush

Little kids love cartoons, so consider which make-believe star your youngster wants to meet. In this age of media ads, movie blockbusters, and action figure toys, your kindergartner may long to take tea with a Disney princess, and your second-grader may count the days until he can team up with Marvels Avengers on a Disney voyage.

Disneys not the only line to make storybooks spring to life. On five of Norwegian Cruise Lines ships, kids can dance with Dora the Explorer, hold hands with SpongeBob and meet other Nickelodeon characters. Carnival has rolled out Seuss at Sea, complete with Seuss-a-palooza Story Time and Green Eggs and Ham Breakfasts. Shrek, Fiona, Puss in Boots and other DreamWorks stars parade on six Royal Caribbean ships, and DreamWorks popular movie releases play onboard.

What Is The Cheapest Month To Go On A Cruise

Unlike Caribbean cruises, San Diego is mostly a seasonal cruise port and highly dependent on ships that sail in Alaska during the summer spending time in San Diego during the winter as well as Fall and Spring cruises when the ships transition from summer to winter cruising destinations.

Additionally, because of this, most cruises from San Diego are seven days or longer.

Based on our expert advice though, you can still find a cheap cruise from San Diego. Repositioning cruises offer great value if you are willing to fly home, instead of having the cruise ship return to San Diego.

These cruises aren’t your typical experience and have fewer port visits than other options but if you are looking to cruise from San Diego to Vancouver for cheap then this is a great option. Prices for these repositioning cruises will generally be $100 or less per day based on double occupancy, not counting port expenses, taxes, and other fees.

This would ultimately make March and April the cheapest months to take a cruise vacation from San Diego.

Best Hotels To Stay At Close To The San Diego Cruise Port

Cruise ship undergoing

San Diego is one of the absolute best cities in the United States when it comes to taking a cruise vacation. Not only is the weather almost always awesome and the port facilities are large enough to be efficient … but not overwhelming, but there are a huge number of hotels at different price points just minutes away from the cruise port.

For instance, if you are looking for a waterfront view so you relax as you overlook San Diego Bay before or after your cruise, places like Wyndham Bayfront, Manchester Hyatt, and Marriott Marquis are great options.

If you want something more urban where you can walk to food, shopping, and nightlife attractions downtown then we recommend Pendry hotel in the heart of the Gaslamp.

On the other hand, if you are looking for something a bit more affordable when selecting a hotel before or after your cruise, Point Loma has a number of boutique hotels such as Dolphin Motel and The Pearl Hotel that are good quality but less expensive.

Do You Need A Passport For Cruises From San Diego

Yes … and no. Customs and Border Control / Immigration officers coming back to the United States may not always require US Citizens to have a passport when traveling to Mexico or Canada. However, your cruise line will almost always require it. If you do not have a passport though, other documentation is generally required which can be complicated and time consuming or even disruptive if something happens where you need to leave the cruise ship for some reason.

Additionally, while a US Passport Card or even the Secure ID Drivers License cards are great for getting back into the United States at land crossings, we strongly recommend bringing your Passport Book to avoid any issues.

Where Do Cruises From San Diego Go To

Cruises from San Diego serve a diverse number of destinations including Hawaii, Panama Canal, Mexican Riviera / Baja Mexico Cruises, as well as California Coastal / Pacific Coast cruises.

Many cruises lines also use San Diego as the starting or ending destination for very long cruises that visit Central and South America, Asia, and the South Pacific including Australia.

How Important Is The Pool

This enormous cruise ship spent the day in San Diego ...

A pools a pool, and all family-friendly ships feature them, but water parks bring out everyones inner child. Carnival, known for its signature slides, ups the energy on its newer and refurbished ships with longer, windier slides that snake, twirl and even flush passengers.

Young kids and grade schoolers relish Royal Caribbeans tame H20 Zone, which brings out the giggles with geysers, water guns, and small pools. Tweens, teens and adults test their skills on RCIs FlowRider, a surf simulator.

Disneys revamped Magic features a thrill slide and a water play area for young kids. AquaDuck elicits screams by partially extending over the ships side while swirling you down 212 feet. Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have similar slides. At AquaLab, younger kids and parents get wet by going down a family slide, getting caught by the bucket dump and running through geysers.

Cruise Ships Will Begin Returning To San Diego This Week Without Passengers

Cruise ships are scheduled to return to the Port of San Diego this week and through the new year, as part of an effort by the cruise lines to reestablish ships in U.S. waters as a prerequisite to resume cruising in a post-COVID-19 world, it was announced Monday.

Five Holland America Line ships and one Princess Cruises ship are scheduled to arrive beginning Wednesday, periodically docking at the B Street Cruise Terminal for fuel, food, supplies and services. At this time, none of the vessels will be carrying passengers or conducting any sailings, according to local port officials.

To resume cruises after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deems it safe in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ships must reestablish operations in United States waters to meet CDC and U.S. Coast Guard guidelines.

According to port officials, time spent docked in San Diego will be limited. Each ship is scheduled to dock at B Street the morning of their scheduled arrival date and depart that evening.

San Diego Will Soon Be Home To Four Cruise Ships For The Next Several Weeks As The Holland America And Princess Cruise Lines Prepare For The Time When They Will Be Allowed To Transport Passengers On Voyages To Us And Foreign Ports

Barred from sailing for the last nine months because of the pandemic, several cruise ships are making their way to San Diego this month, but dont expect to see thousands of passengers boarding or disembarking from the ocean liners.

The extended visit by the Holland America cruise ships is the first step toward getting certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the time when they will be able to begin welcoming passengers aboard next year.

For now, its not likely San Diego will see cruise lines resuming voyages until at least the spring, but even then it remains uncertain how many ships that normally sail out of the port will have met all the federal requirements.

The first of the four Holland America ships coming here the Koningsdam arrived at the B Street Pier on Wednesday. Because the vessels had not previously been in U.S. waters, they are taking that step now in order to begin laboratory testing of crew members on board. It is part of the first phase of the CDC process for the restart of cruising, which also requires the eventual launch of simulated voyages to test the ships ability to manage any outbreaks of COVID-19 on board.

During the time the Holland America ships are in San Diego, they will periodically return to the B Street Terminal to refuel and get more supplies. Each ship will average 90 to 120 crew members, who will not be allowed to disembark except for needed crew changes

Holland America Cruises Things To Do

  • The refined atmosphere of Holland America Line ships draws interest from older cruise travelers who can also afford to pay the cruise line’s higher prices. When you set sail on a HAL ship, you will enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. Therefore, guests onboard like the afternoon tea service and activities that feature ballroom dancing. However, that does not mean the cruise line does not attract families. KId-friendly programs are available online for the younger crowd, 3 to 17 years old. Nevertheless, if you are seeking a more family-friendly adventure, you may want to set your sights on a cruise provider, such as Disney or Carnival. Are There Cheap Mexico Cruises From San Diego

Cruise ship makes unexpected stop in San Diego

As the west coast cruise market re-builds, most cruises to Mexico from San Diego are longer cruises compared to the cheap three day and four day Mexican Riviera and Baja cruises that you might find out of San Pedro and Long Beach.

As the industry continues to recover, we expect to see more cheap cruises to Mexico like we saw before the pandemic.
