Our Scenic cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest was fantastic! The crew on board the Scenic Jasper were so polite, enthusiastic and willing to help and the food and drink was terrific and endless. As for the passengers on board, they too were wonderful. We made special friends from around the world including a couple from Texas and another from England. Plus many more. The sights from the ship were so stunning and there was so much to see that you almost didn’t want to go to bed in case you missed some of it. Bruce and Catriona

Awesome is the one word to describe this trip. It first started with the transfer pick up in Amsterdam. Our driver was there with his sign as soon as we entered the terminal. Whisked us off to our hotel in Amsterdam the Movenpic. We did the pre extension. The hotel is very nice, though they could provide viking guest with priority entrance to our rooms, after travelling sitting until 3:00 waiting for a room is annoying. However if the weather would have been better it probably wouldn’t have mattered. The walking tour the next day was fantastic we had Klauss, he’s amazing! Boarding the viking Eistla was…wow. It was more than I expected. The “light lunch” was great, salad, sandwiches, pasta salads, really quite a bit of food. Free flowing wine and beer! The whole trip exceeded our expectation. The staterooms are very nice, small but efficient we had a balcony so that was nice. The showers are great. The staff are fantastic, from the cabin stewards to the dinning room staff. We were likely enough to have Goran, Martina, Lucas and Seta! If you have them your in for a treat! The food was amazing five star all the way! I’m not sure what some other reviews complain about but I guess you just can’t please some people…we had some on our cruise. Rude people really. I would go on a viking river cruise and we are looking into the ocean cruise for 2016. Highly recommend it, although have to say make sure you go on the new long ships as they are fantastic!

You can also join a guided bike tour along the Danube, and if you would like, you can bike later in the day further along the Danube through the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley that will take you to Dürnstein. For those not biking, youll cruise through the Wachau Valley to Dürnstein. Once here, you have a choice of excursions. Partake in a walking tour along cobblestone streets to the Baroque Stiftskirche before enjoying a local wine tasting. For a more active adventure, hike up to the fortress where Richard the Lionheart was once held. You may also choose to visit a local apricot grower, where youll be treated to the finest apricot products in the region.

Sailing Into Budapest Hungary

On our second to last night on the boat during our cruise from Vienna to Budapest I woke before sunrise. I stepped out onto the balcony to find the boat shrouded in thick, swirling fog. As first light shone on the horizon, the fog hovered just above the water and burrowed in villages.

Shortly after sunrise, the air still thick with moisture, we approached Budapest. Even though it wasnt clear, I climbed to the top deck for 360-degree views of the city. As we sailed under the Margaret Bridge into the heart of Budapest, the remaining mist was quickly evaporating it was as if the city was being unveiled just for our arrival!

Cologne Beer Tour Germany

Kolsch is the beer of Cologne, Germanyand when in Cologne, one must drink Kolsch !

We joined an entertaining Cologne pub crawl, which included a hearty pre-drinking classic German meal of pork, kraut and potato salad. With the proper base, we bar hopped to six brew houses to sample fresh Kolsch beer straight from the barrel.

The production of Kolsch beer is limited to breweries located within 50km of Cologne, which must meet strict requirements to carry the name Kolsch. In the taverns, waiters called kobes carry a two-tiered tray of beer, replacing any empty glasses with full ones. Only when we placed a coaster over our beer did they stop leaving more. Sohow many did we have? We lost count, prost!

*The Cologne Beer Tour was an optional excursion organized by our Viking Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest.

Are Water Levels Low On The Danube

Water levels arent uniform. That is to say, if theres low water on the Danube, the entire Danube isnt affected. In 2014, water levels were too low for many ships to pass between the German cities of Passau and Regensburg. In past years, the stretch heading across the Austria-Hungary border has been problematic.

Grand Europe Amsterdam to Budapest River Cruise

We found the AmaStella was first class and the staff were superb. The tours and excursions were also first rate – the dinner at Namedy Castle, the private concert in Vienna, the Imperator train to Salzberg, the palaces and the villages – all picture-postcard perfect. The on-board entertainment was wonderful – the gypsy violins in Budapest were a great grand finale! Once again APT were superbly organised and professional. The whole experience was seamless. We would completely recommend it. David & Michelle
