About The Mexican Riviera

The Mexican Riviera is the Pacific coastline of Mexico. This region is also known as the gem of the Pacific. The ports of call along this picturesque coastline are each unique and special, offering individual characteristics and a hospitable hacienda charm that can only be found in the Mexican Pacific. The most popular ports of call in the Mexican Pacific include Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Ixtapa.

As a general rule, the longer the duration of the cruise, the more ports of call. This is especially true in the Mexican Riviera, where port cities are often situated at considerable distances from one another. With the exception of Ensenada, the Mexican Riviera features warm weather almost every day of the year. Summer hurricanes can affect cruise itineraries, so be sure to check with your cruise line in the event of any weather disturbances.

Best Places To Visit On Mexican Riviera Cruises

LA to Mexican Riviera Cruise

On your Mexican Riviera cruise, you will be able to visit several places during your shore excursions. Some of the best places to visit are as follows:

Tulum: It is renowned for its crystal-clear water, soft sand and swaying palm trees. You can even explore ancient Mayan ruins.

The Great Mayan Reef: This 600-mile long reef begins from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and extends through Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. This is the perfect place to go scuba diving and snorkeling. You will be mesmerized by the sea creatures, including manatees and whale sharks, swimming lazily in the clear waters.

Sian Kaan Biosphere: This biosphere is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is spread over an area of 1.3 million acres. The tropical forest has spider monkeys, jaguars, and pumas. You can take the ancient Mayan route that involves a soothing boat ride that follows an old trading route.

Rio Secreto: This half-sunken cave is a wonderful place to swim and hike. The cave system has an underground river and the walls have face drawings that go back to the time of the ancient Mayans.

Cozumel: This island is a major cruise port and most visitors head to San Miguel, where you will be able to visit markets and enjoy the different dining and drinking choices. You will be able to spend time at isolated beaches but if you enjoy crowds, head to the western side of Cozumel to relax in beach clubs and resorts.

What To Eat In Mexico

When on land, a lot of people prefer a more active vacation, but it can also be a lot of fun to eat your way through the restaurants. Seriously, we could quite happily spend the mornings meandering along the back streets of our current destination and then spend the afternoons and evenings eating our way through town on a food tour.

And as far as the coastline is concerned, the Mexican Riviera offers many opportunities to dine with a view of the ocean or be served a cocktail right on the sand.

TIP: If you are a vegetarian, we have a guide to Mexican Vegetarian food!

With so many beautiful and interesting places to explore we suggest taking a cruise first to cover the most ground. Once you have paid a visit to the entire coast line it will be easier to plan a destination based vacation for your next trip to the region. Maybe youll want to book a few days in Cabo or visit one of the quieter surrounding destinations.

Like with other long trips, a visit to the Mexican Riviera calls for a certain amount of blank space within your itinerary. We recommend leaving yourself a bit of wiggle room in your schedule because there will always be little things that come up and change your plans. Talk to the locals and vacation spontaneously. That is one of our favorite ways to vacation.

Snap lots of pictures and have a great trip!

Where Do Mexican Riviera Cruises Begin

Depending on the cruise line, you will embark in either Los Angeles or San Diego. Its important to know your embarkation port so your shuttle or taxi will drop you at the right one.

Los Angeles has two ports: the World Cruise Center and the Long Beach Cruise Terminal . It can take more than an hour to get to either cruise port from LA International Airport .

  • Princess Cruises and Norwegian sail from San Pedro
  • Carnival Cruises sails from Long Beach.

San Diego also has two terminals: the B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal and the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Most cruises depart from the B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal. Both terminals are approximately 10 minutes drive from San Diego International Airport .

These cruise lines sail from San Diego:

  • Carnival Cruise Line.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line.
  • Princess Cruises.

Even if its a 10-minute trip to the terminal, weve experienced enough unforeseen travel delays to recommend arriving a day or two early. You dont want to miss the boat!

Might as well take advantage of your time in these Southern California cities before departing on your cruise.

  • If in LA, pay a visit to Griffith Park or walk along Santa Monica Pier.
  • If in San Diego, visit the famous San Diego Zoo with this skip the line ticket. Or, relax along Black Beach while you watch the locals ride the waves.

What About Days At Sea

Best and Worst Time to Cruise the Mexican Riviera

Many of the longer cruises have days at sea built in. These are the days that you will want to spend relaxing, refreshing and truly enjoying your trip. What that looks like is up to you.

While many people will be hitting the deck and enjoying an expensive cocktail poolside, we consider this the perfect opportunity to explore the ship. Scope out the secret destinations in the morning. Who knows what you might discover? Cruise ships may have 1-3 main pools which are sure to be full on sea days, but you might find a spa pool or Jacuzzi in a part of the ship thats less crowded.

Battles With Cdc Over Health Requirements

The cruise industry was hard-hit by the pandemic after passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19 and some ships were turned away from ports. The industry has battled the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over health requirements for resuming sailing in U.S. waters.

Major cruise lines were granted permission by the CDC in April to resume sailing in U.S. waters by mid-summer so long as 95% of customers and 98% of crew are vaccinated against COVID-19. Passenger cruise ships had been barred from excursions leaving U.S. domestic ports in March of last year, under the CDC’s “no sail” order.

Carnival said its operational protocols exceed CDC recommendations. They include having all employees vaccinated and requiring all passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test.

Passengers must be vaccinated, but the company will allow “a small number of exemptions” for those unable to get the vaccine, including children under 12 who are not yet eligible. Those who are unvaccinated will have to follow additional precautions, according to Carnival’s COVID-19 guest protocols.

Last week, 27 people tested positive for COVID-19 on a Carnival cruise just before the ship made a stop in Belize City, Belize. The ship headed back to Galveston, Texas, Friday after stopping in Mexico.

The positive cases were among 26 crew members and one passenger on the Carnival Vista, which was carrying over 1,400 crew and nearly 3,000 passengers, the Belize Tourism Board said in a statement.

Best Time To Visit And Weather

The best time to embark on a Mexican Riviera cruise is from late November to the end of February when the region experiences the dry season. You may want to avoid the rainy season from May to November when the area receives a lot of rainfall. From March to May is summer, when the heat is oppressive and humidity levels are high. This will make it uncomfortable during shore excursions.

Be Prepared To Haggle

Vendors in Mexican mercados are accustomed to haggling over price, so never pay the marked or state price. Bargaining with the merchant isn’t rude or a sign of being an “Ugly American” it’s the way business is done. On the other hand, don’t be rude and don’t offer vendors a ridiculously low price. A good rule of thumb is to settle for about 20 percent off the original price.

Texas And New Orleans

In January and February, the Disney Magic will sail from Galveston, Texas, on a variety of four-, five-, six- and seven-night itineraries to the Western Caribbean. Tropical ports of call on these sailings include Grand Cayman as well as Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico.

Keep In Mind Mexico Is A Foreign Country

Passports are now required for all visitors to Mexico, which might come as a surprise to veteran cruisers who used to travel with only a driver’s license. All passengers must clear Customs when leaving and re-entering the country, so allow extra time at departure–and don’t expect to dash off the ship as soon as the boat docks in port back in the United States. The one area in which Mexico differs from other foreign ports is that no currency exchange is needed. Dollars are freely and graciously accepted at Mexican ports of call.

Best Things To Do On Mexican Riviera Cruises

Quebrada Cliff Diver Show: You can watch this show in Acapulco. During the day, watching the divers dive into the crystal clear water while in the night, the show can be awe-inspiring as the divers hold torches and plunge into the inky dark water.

Whale Watching: Go on a boat excursion off the coast of La Paz to spy whales swimming gracefully in the water. You will also be able to spot sea lions and dolphins frolicking in the azure waters.

Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park: Take time to visit Huatulco where this park is located. The wetlands offer refuge to a wide variety of birds. As you explore the expansive park on foot, you will come across several ancient ruins that are believed to be over 2,000 years old.

Yelapa Forest: Located outside Puerto Vallarta, the forest has a stunning waterfall that is worth exploring. This excursion requires you to go on a horseback ride to traverse the forest.

Ensenada: Enjoy delicious fish tacos that are made from freshly grilled or fried fish. Once you taste the taco, you will never want to eat any other type of taco.
