The 13 Best Retirement Cruises for Seniors

Cruises embarking from Vancouver offer passengers a remarkable trip to some of Alaskas most iconic and beautiful coastal locales. These one-way glacier routes operate from Vancouver to Seward and Vancouver to Whittier.

Although Alaska cruise itineraries differ, most cruise lines make three to four port calls and spend two or three days at sea exploring places like Glacier Bay National Park. Seward-bound cruises finish with a nighttime cruise out of the Gulf of Alaska and into Resurrection Bay, while Whittier-bound ships spend their final day cruising through Prince William Sound.

One of the perks of taking a Vancouver glacier route cruise is being able to take an Alaska land package after the voyage disembarks. You can use our Trip Finder tool to search for post-cruise tours to places like Denali National Park and Fairbanks that will turn your trip from a cruise alone to the ultimate Alaska vacation. Dont have enough time for a land package? Not to worry, we can also help you coordinate cruise transfers to Anchorage in order to catch an outbound flight.

Many of the major cruise lines operating in Alaska also offer roundtrip cruises from Vancouver. These Inside Passage routes typically include one fewer port of call and one additional day at sea compared to cruises that travel one way to Alaska.

Princess Cruises Adjusts Requirements And Suffers Staff Shortages In Alaska

Princess Cruises adjusts requirements for cruisetours and forced to close one of its lodges in Alaska due to staff shortages.

Princess Cruises has made several changes, both to the cruise lines health and safety requirements for cruisetours and an impact due to staff shortages. Besides the COVID test that guests need to present before the cruise, they will also need to provide a test before the cruisetour.

However, guests that booked a cruisetour that included a stay in the Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge will be disappointed to learn that the Lodge will be closed from June 17 onwards.

After two years where cruise tourism did not come to Alaska, Princess Cruises has difficulty finding enough staff to work in the Copper River Lodge.

Canada Opens To Cruise Ships

A lot depended on what the Canadian Government would do to allow cruise ships to operate within its borders this year. Luckily, the Canadians implemented health protocols that largely mimicked those in place in the United States, with some minor changes.

The reopening of Canadian ports to the cruise industry is a bold and important move that significantly expands the array of travel opportunities available to guests while boosting the economies of the Canadian and Alaska destinations we visit by generating important revenue and job opportunities, said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president.

We know firsthand how cherished these voyages are to both guests and those destinations following our shortened but successful return to Alaska in 2021 that was made possible with the passing of the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act.

Caribbean Princess will be the first cruise ship in two years to make an appearance in Canada on April 6 of this year. She will be making a stopover in Victoria, BC, followed by a stop in Vancouver on April 7.

The reopening of Canadian ports means that cruises on the east coast of Canada can also take place this year. The popular Princess Cruises New England and Canada voyages depart from Quebec and New York, visiting Halifax, Saint John, Cape Breton Island, and Charlottetown.

The 2022 season features 16 departures and six unique itineraries on Enchanted Princess and Caribbean Princess from July through October.

More Changes To Cruisetours

Island Princess Cruise Ship Leaving Vancouver Canada Stock Photo ...

Its not just the cruise lines that are having trouble finding enough staff for their ships the problem also seems to have affected land-based tourism options. Princess Cruises has now been forced to cancel a significant portion of the cruisetours this summer.

From June 17, Princess Cruises will be closing down its famous Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge due to staffing issues. The lodge, which sits about 3 hour drive north of Anchorage, is an important launch point for visits to the largest national park in the United States, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve

In an announcement from Negin Kamali, a spokeswoman with Princess Cruises, the company states that guests will be compensated by the cruise line, as well as looking for alternative employment for affected employees:

Guests with affected land tours will have the option of accepting an alternative itinerary, rebooking for 2023, or canceling their cruise tour. Princess Cruises is also working to provide employment opportunities for the displaced teammates from Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Guests will need to be quick to rebook their cruisetours to other options. Princess Cruises normally offers cruisetours to five different lodges. Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge is closed from those five, and Denali Lodge is no longer accepting reservations for the 2022 season.

Princess Cruises Prepares For Full Alaska 2022 Season

Following Canada releasing its protocols for cruise ships, Princess Cruises prepares for a full 2022 Alaska season.

Princess Cruises will be sailing its entire scheduled Alaska 2022 season. The cruise line made the announcement on March 9, following the release of the Canadian health requirements earlier this week. Canada is a vital stopover and departure port for Alaska cruises, as ships based in the United States must make a stop in a foreign country before returning to the US.

Princess Cruises will send six cruise ships to the region in the upcoming months. Cruises include twelve different itineraries, 140 departures, and five glacier-viewing experiences, with visits to the Southeast Alaska towns of , Skagway, and Ketchikan.

Princess Tightens Cruisetour Requirements

In a message to guests, Princess Cruises has announced heightened measures for guests on the Southbound, land first, cruisetours. This means those guests who have opted to go on the land tour before they embark on the cruise ship will have to produce a negative test result before the start of their cruisetour.

In the message, the cruise line states that guests two years of age and older must now produce a medically observed negative viral COVID-19 test result at the start of their pre-cruise land tour.

The test must be taken two days before the tour if guests opt for an antigen test and three days before the tour if guests opt for a PCR test.

As is the case with testing before cruising, the medically observed at-home tests such as Optum are accepted. Guests will still need to take a test before they embark on the cruise portion of their package. This test will be provided to guests on a complimentary basis.

This comes on top of the requirements that guests have when they complete their cruisetour and return to the United States. If flying from Vancouver back to the US, they must show a negative test result or documentation of recovery before boarding their flights.

In the meantime, while guests are now having to possibly re-arrange any testing arrangements they had made, they will perhaps need to re-arrange their entire cruise.

Vancouver To Whittier Alaska Cruises

Despite its swanky glass and steel skyline, Vancouver maintains a warm, welcoming appeal. It is often called a city of neighborhoods, and most cruise passengers with time to spare find the nickname holds quite true. The architecturally noteworthy Canada Place, which houses the Vancouver cruise terminal, sits at the border of two particularly unique neighborhoods: the relaxed waterside Coal Harbor and foodie friendly Gastown. A visit to each is a must before boarding for a late afternoon cruise departure.

Princess Cruises and Holland America run this northbound route from Vancouver to Whittier. The first full day is typically spent cruising along the west coast of Canada on the way to the protected waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Passengers enjoy their first shore day in either Ketchikan or Icy Strait depending on the ship. Port calls in Juneau and Skagway follow.

The cruise spends its final day sailing through College Fjord in Prince William Sound before docking in the tiny port town of Whittier. Cruise passengers can conveniently transfer to Anchorage via the Park Connection Motorcoach, which leaves mid-morning and reaches Anchorage just after noon, or aboard an evening Alaska Railroad train.
