I Had A Hard Time Tearing My Boys Away From The Dessert Table And Fruit Punch Pitchers

Lunch was served about half-an-hour into our trip. The buffet had a mix of Hawaiian, Asian and American flavors. The adults in our group liked the citrus-miso-glazed white fish, lomi lomi salmon and roast beef, while our boys mostly ate teriyaki chicken, Big Island sweet potatoes, furikake rice, chow mein noodles and rolls. Of course, the highlight for the kids was the dessert which included brownies, coconut cake and macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies. Water, fruit punch, tea and coffee are included while soft drinks and alcohol can be purchased from the bar.

As soon as we were done eating, the naturalists announced that whales were spotted up ahead. We were so excited to see them that in our rush, our group split up. Three of us saw a couple whales surface, spout and flick their tails from the third-floor deck.

What Kind Of Whales Can You See

The waters around Oahu are home to a number of different kinds of whales, including Humpbacks, Sperm Whales, False Killer Whales, Melon Headed Whales, and Pygmy Whales.

The most common whales youll see during a typical boating tour along the shores of Oahu would be Humpback Whales they migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii from Alaska and spend the winter breeding and birthing their calves.

An interesting thing about these tours is that its not just about watching whales youre also able to spot other marine species like dolphins and sea turtles.

Whale Watching Cruise On A Big Comfortable Ship

Great cruise, comfortable, handicapped accessible ship, great staff, well set up for viewing whales, had a great time

Aloha,Thank you for your review. We’re happy to read that you had an enjoyable Whale Watch Cruise. We hope to see you back out on the water with us soon. Mahalo,

We were on a big-ship cruise and landed in Honolulu. Saw the Star Office and checked out the dinner cruise options they have several options to fit all needs. We chose the sit-down dinner of crab legs and tenderloin. The food was excellent, the entertainment was fun, and the beautiful sunset made it a perfect ‘couples’ evening.

Aloha,From Ship to Ship! Thank you for writing a review for us. We’re glad that you had a great time out with us in Mamala Bay. We hope to see you again soon!Mahalo,

We reviewed the local cruises for whale watching in the Honolulu area and noted that the ‘Star of Honolulu’ consistently received high marks for the experience and great value. Well, the reviews were on target. We elected to utilize the transportation service and enjoy lunch aboard the ship and was delighted in all aspects. We were able to enjoy four separate whale sightings to include viewing a humpback cow and calf. Would highly recommend this cruise service for those visiting the Honolulu area.

How Long Does A Whale Watching Tour Take

Whale watching tours generally last from 2 to 3 hours depending on the package you book.

Some tours include a meal on board but the length of the excursion doesnt necessarily mean youll see more whales though.

This highly depends on the season youre going so check with the tour operator to get a better idea.

Things To Bring On A Whale Watching Tour

A camera is a must! Youll be seeing amazing sights that are hard to put into words, so having a good camera can make all the difference when trying to capture those elusive moments.

Binoculars are also a great idea if you want to get a closer look at these amazing creatures.

If youre planning on doing a longer tour, you might want to bring some light snacks, water and wear something comfortable with non-slip shoes.

It can also get pretty windy, so you might want to bring a hat and a windbreaker.

Beautifully arched backs, graceful limbs leaping and truly inspiring choreography. No, were not talking about prima ballerinas pirouetting on a brightly lit stage, but what we are describing are indeed dancers in their own rites, taking part each year in a truly awe-inspiring annual ocean ballet. Every circle of the sun, Hawaiian humpback whales migrate south from the frigid ocean tides of Alaska to the tropical tides of Hawaii in order to mate and give birth.

We Saw Two Whales Surfacing And Spouting Water

Star of Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise

We met up with the other two on the very top of the shipon the tower lookout observation areajust as we sailed near Maunalua. The crowd at the front of the ship yelled whenever someone saw a whale. The whales would surface roughly every three minutes, appearing a couple hundred feet from their last position. Our boys kept scanning the ocean and squealing when they saw them again. We were hoping theyd breach but mostly we snapped photos of their backs and distinctive tails as well as a few flying fish.

Having lived on Oahu for a long time, it was also fun to see Koko Head, Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head from a different perspective. On the return trip, the boys and I tried to spot beaches weve been to along the Khala Coast and by Doris Dukes estate as well as Kaimana Beach, the lagoon by Hilton Hawaiian Village and Magic Island.

Make The Star Of Honolulu The Star Of Your Trip To Hawaii

Islands have a unique attraction, and the Hawaiian Islands are no exception. When you are on the island, you can easily explore the terrain, yet there is always the lure of the sea, almost like an itch you just have to scratch. There is something quite magical when you feel the sand between your toes for the first time as you marvel at the beauty of the seascape that lies before you.

Turn around, and youve got the interior of the island as your backdrop, enticing you inwards to explore further. However, there is one element of the perfect trip to an island missing, and that is the only drawback of modern travel. Because it takes a good fortnight to sail to Hawaii from, say San Diego and only six hours to fly from there, most of you will come to Hawaii by plane, and miss out on viewing the island from the sea. Taking a morning or evening cruise means you look at and admire the islands in the same way that seafarers would have done three centuries ago is special and difficult to replicate.

Humpback whales come to Hawaii every winter to breed and give birth. Its fun to see the huge, majestic creatures breaching offshore, but I usually think of whale watching cruises as a tourist thing rather than something for local families. Our ohana was recently invited on the Star of Honolulu and decided to give it a try. Heres what we saw, our tips and how to get the best kamaina deals.

Our family went on the Premier Whale Watch and Lunch Cruise. We parked at Aloha Tower, spotted the large ship and Star of Honolulu shopfront, checked in around 11:30 a.m. and went on board. The captain warmly welcomed our boys as they saluted him. He asked my oldest if he knew the difference between a ship and a boat and my Titanic-obsessed boy checked on the lifeboat situation. We took photos and went inside the air-conditioned first floor.
