Close to the cruise terminal, Rainbow Falls is an 80-foot-tall attraction on the Wailuku River. Its a favorite stop amongst cruise passengers since it charges no fee and is wheelchair accessible.
Fifteen miles north of Hilo, I visited the more spectacular Akaka Falls. Theres a small fee to access the park for waterfall viewing. Inside the park, its a bit of a hike, but the falls are a must when in Hilo.
Without a doubt, the most popular port excursion includes a trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. While some port tours include Rainbow Falls, Banyan Drive, Liliuokalani Gardens, and an Orchid Farm, the days pinnacle is seeing the mighty Kilauea Volcano.
I have visited Kilauea three times and have been amazed at the caldera changes and its level of activity. If you plan to visit Kilauea, be sure to check if the park is open before you plan a visit.
I rented a car during one of my visits and took a humbling drive to the Puna district and Pahoa. Here, the black lava engulfs an entire fishing village. Its an eerie feeling standing on an old lava field with no trees, birds, or signs of life.

Sadly, no. You can take a cruise ship, with all the trappings, from various points along the west coast of North America. It is about 4.5 days at sea each way, and include daily stops at some of the major ports. The problem is that you cannot choose your own schedule or stay in Hawaii or on one island as long as you want. You hit-and-run a handful of ports.
I wish that a cruiseline, like Holland America, would have a flex plan for Hawaii. I can ship my car much easier than I can ship myself!
There are some companies that you can go from the west coast to Hawaii on. Royal Caribbean and Carnival come to mind. Better to cruise to Hawaii than not come at all!!
Disney is starting a cruise in October I think.
I would rather spend the 5 days there and 5 days back actually in Hawaii but to each their own.
