Eastbound transatlantic guide

Here is a typical timetable, transfer & journey information for most eastbound trans-Atlantic crossings. Although they usually follow this pattern, please check sailing & check-in times for your specific date when you book in case they are different. If you find that anything has changed, dolet me know. If you plan to travel westbound, .

So Why Does It Take About Three To Four Weeks

In addition to the fact that the total distance of this journey is about 6,800km, a sailboat never sails in a straight line. The voyage is general S-shaped or curved so you’ll cover more distance than the normal 6,800 km. In other words, you’ll most likely cover 8,000 km, which may take you up to three weeks in good weather and an additional one week if the weather and the winds are working against you.

And because you never know what the ocean and the weather might bring, it only makes sense to talk about distance in nautical miles and not based on time. There are, however, several factors that come into play when crossing the Atlantic on a sailboat.

For example, the type of boat you are using will influence your traveling speed. Generally, sailboats may reach 10 knots which is just about 11.51 MPH. Besides the speed, your location may also be a huge factor. For instance, you may have to cover a greater distance if you’re traveling from California than if you’re traveling from California.

The Play Zone & Child Care

The Zone is aft on deck 6, staffed by a team of friendly young British-trained nannies. It has a toddler zone for ages 1-3, a Play Zone for ages 4-6 and The Zone with various computer games and other activities for older kids up to 17. There’s plenty to do, and activities such as treasure hunts or ship tours are organised by the Play Zone team.

While in no way a comprehensive list of preparations, here are some jumping off points to think about when planning your voyage:

  • Learn how to service and maintain your engine and key machinery, have a good set of tools on board. Video repair tips and techniques when you have technicians on board to refer to later.
  • Have your yacht lifted, antifouled, stern gear serviced, and anodes replaced. Consider fitting a rope cutter. Also check steering systems and replace rudder bearings.
  • Create a boat manual with all your procedures, equipment and the location of safety and medical equipment for crew to access.

Oil Tanker Powered By Lng

Right now, an oil tanker powered by liquefied natural gas is serving the Northern Sea Route. This is the first time there has been an oil tanker transiting this route. Some say climate change made it possible for commercial ships to use this route.

The Aframax tanker, loaded with more than 100,000 metric tons of crude oil, started to take this route in August of 2019. It took about eight days to reach Cape Dezhnev from Cape Zhelaniya. It moved at an average speed of 12 knots.

If this oil tanker crosses the shortest route from the US east coast, Port of New York, to the nearest port in the United Kingdom, London Thamesport, which is about 3,785 nautical miles, it will reach the port in London in about 11.4 days.

How Much Will It Cost To Sail Across The Atlantic And Back

Cruising costs will depend on how you wish to live while cruising.

If you want to spend time in marinas, eat out regularly, hire cars, take tours and fly home occasionally, obviously that will be different to a more self-contained life on board at anchor.

As a guide, we asked Swedish couple Kaj and Malin to add up their costs to prepare for their trip and during the 14-month sabbatical.

Costs will be much lower where you can stay at anchor rather than berth in a marine. Credit: Kaj Maass/Malin Andersson

The budget for our trip was 80,000 to buy the boat, and 30,000 of upgrades, Kaj says.

The upgrades included a new engine, new standing rigging, a Hydrovane and satellite communications.

They dropped the rudder and the keel and reinforced the area around it.

Of the total budget, around 10,000 was spent on safety equipment.

How to sail Biscay: 3 ways to tackle the milestone

Beyond Biscay is a diverse coastal cruising ground and the route to the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Will Bruton

Their cruising costs were around 2,500 a month for the two of them, averaging out the most expensive parts of the journey from Sweden to the Canary Islands, when harbour fees were costing around 40 a night.

This would cover some eating out ashore and car rental for tours.

If you plan to buy a boat, sail it back and sell it right after your trip, however, you may be able sidestep some ongoing costs.

What Time Of Year Is Best For An Atlantic Crossing

Travelers on a fall transatlantic cruise enjoy an extra hour of sleep almost every night as the ship travels east to west. Of course the reverse is true for spring Atlantic crossings where an hour is lost each day.

Alan and I definitely prefer fall for those extra hours of sleep. And the long voyage is a good way to relax after a couple of weeks exploring Europe.

The passenger liner era roughly lasted for about 100 years, from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. Its evolution can be divided into four distinct phases:

The usage of ships for passengers is now restricted to cruise shipping, ferries, and small-scale passenger crafts on archipelago countries or great river systems in developing economies .

Whats The Smallest Boat That You Can Cross The Atlantic In

The smallest boat to cross the Atlantic was only 5 ft, 4in long. It was captained by Hugo Vihlen, A 61-year-old man from Homestead Florida. While it is certainly possible to cross the Atlantic in a boat this small, most of us wouldnt choose to make the passage this way.

Hugo lost 34 pounds and took considerably longer to make the crossing than hed intended. While he expected it to only take 75 days, in fact, it took a 106 days. He was clear that he had no intention of doing anything like that again, indicating that he must not have had the best of times.

This little boat was not like most. It was made of stainless steel and built like a submarine to keep Hugo safe from the elements. He was stopped twice when he tried to sail off of the coast of Cape Cod by the US Coast Guard because the Coast Guard considered the boat to be unsafe. It was only when he set off from Canada that he was able to make the trip.

Hugo did not have enough wind to make the sail as quickly as he had intended. If he had not gotten supplies for a passing ship, he may not have made it.

Someone Is Trying To Cross The Atlantic By Boat In Just 48 Hours

This is amazing. Richard George, a UK businessman, is trying to cross the Atlantic in just two days. If he accomplishes this feat, he will be the fastest man to ever cross the Atlantic. This report was published in Mail Online. I was trying to get the latest update of this news to no avail.

Anyways, George has assembled a team of engineers to build a 34 meter powerboat which they call a wave-piercing boat. With this boat, they plan to make the Cornwall, UK to New York trip in only 48 hours.

George would like to break the record of Aga Khan. The present record of Khan is two days, ten hours, and 54 minutes. Khans powerboat traveled at a fast clip of 65 kph to get the record. Georges powerboat has an average speed of 105 kph. On paper, Khans record will be easily erased by George.

Buy A Boat You Will Enjoy

While in the Azores in 2012 I met Stuart and Anne Letton, who were sailing their Island Packet 45, Time Bandit, back to the UK.

Their boat was brimming with sensible ideas for living aboard and I have kept in touch with them over the years as they are a wonderful source of thoughtful advice.

Since then they have sold the Island Packet, bought an Outremer 51 catamaran, sailed across the Atlantic again, and are presently in Indonesia having sailed across the Pacific.

In total, they have now logged a very impressive 60,000 miles.

Catamarans are increasingly popular thanks to their speed and space. Credit: Stuart & Anne Letton

Before we went cruising, I spent a lot of time looking at what would be the best, safest mode of transport. I wanted a proven, tough, sturdy, bombproof ocean cruiser, hence Time Bandit , the Beige Battleship, says Stuart.

Having spent my sailing career racing performance dinghies and keel boats, this was something of a departure for me. It was safe. And a bit boring. However, the reality is you all end up in the same place, give or take a few days. With reflection, though, Id say, buy a boat that will make you happy, one that reflects your sailing style and capabilities. We opted for slow but safe and used the safe features a handful of days in 10 years. Those were years we could have been enjoying more rewarding sailing.

How Long Will It Take To Travel From Europe To America On An Ocean Liner

The destination is the journey.

Perhaps you’ve done the whole flying-over-the-Atlantic thing before, and it’s time to spice things up. Or, maybe you’re unable to hop a plane and you’re looking for an alternative method for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Either way, transatlantic ocean liners offer another option for traveling to America from Europe, or vise versa. Of course, this method of crossing the Atlantic Ocean is much slower than its airborne alternatives, but some travelers find it much more interesting.
