Thrill Attractions At Cococay

A week before the cruise departed, we made sure to purchase day passes to the Thrill Waterpark. It was quite obvious that Royal Caribbean was marketing the waterpark as one of their main attractions post remodel.

We secured two Thrill Waterpark Full Day passes for $34.99 per person. The tickets were in our stateroom when we arrived on the cruise ship and also automatically loaded onto our seapass cards.

The waterpark was the first item on our agenda to maximize our perfect day at Cococay. We headed straight to the entrance of the park after disembarking the cruise ship. By heading there first thing in the morning we were able to avoid crowds and long lines on the waterslides.

Getting into the waterpark was extremely easy we definitely recommend purchasing your tickets ahead of time however if needed you can also purchase them on the island.

If you purchase tickets ahead of time, you can simply scan your seapass card at the entrance and you are on your way! You will also receive a wristband for easy re-entry.

Before heading up to the slides we grabbed two lounge chairs and an umbrella right in front of the wave pool. This ended up being an incredible spot as it was right next to the Snack Shack, bathrooms, smack dab in the middle of the waterpark and a short walk to the South Beach.

Pro tip:Set yourself up for the day near the wave pool. You cannot go wrong with this location.

What Is The Coco Beach Club

Think of the club as a resort within a resort. On CocoCay, you have an entire island to enjoy. You can lounge by the pool, head to the beach, play in the waterpark, or grab a bite to eat.

But you are also sharing that space with literally thousands of other people. Paradise? Yes, but it can be a crowded paradise.

For those that want a little more elbow room, Royal Caribbean built the Coco Beach Club. Behind a winding path through lush tropical vegetation, youll find this part of the island thats completely separate from the rest of CocoCay.

Inside the club there are a number of amenities, including

Coco Beach Club Restaurant: There is an open-air restaurant serving up higher-end fare like filet mignon and grilled lobster.

Infinity Pool: Want to take a dip? No beach club would be complete without a pool. Here, there is a sweeping infinity pool for guests to enjoy.

Private Beach: CocoCay is known for beaches, but the spot here takes it up a notch. There are tons of loungers with umbrellas on a beach thats only for guests of the club.

Poolside Bar: Of course, there is a bar at the club, sitting between the restaurant and the pool. If you have the drink package on the ship, it will extend to the island.

Cabanas: One of the big attractions to the club are the cabanas. There are two types ones on the beach and ones that float out over the water.

Are The Cabanas At Cococay Worth It

What

A cabana at Perfect Day at CocoCay is not cheap, but they provide exactly what they advertise: a private enclave on the island for your family to enjoy, with upgraded service and options to enjoy.

The Thrill Waterpark cabanas offer the best value, since they are the only ones to include waterpark admission with the cost of the cabana. If you have four to six guests and were planning to do the cabana anyway, a cabana is arguably a good investment for the day.

The other cabanas are, as advertised, private enclaves for a splurge-worthy day at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Just like upgrading your seat on an airplane to first class, a cabana is about treating yourself to additional service and comfort.

Since cabanas can handle six to eight guests, if you can split the cost of the cabana with another family, that can greatly assist in making the value of a cabana worth it.

Got Kids Don’t Miss The Free Slides

It is easy to gravitate towards Thrill Waterpark, but Royal Caribbean provides two water splash areas for kids that costs absolutely nothing extra.

Captain Jill’s Galleon and Splashaway Bay are located immediately at the entrance to the island from the pier.

If you have younger kids , you may find these areas a great fit for kids, with seating around both areas for adults to supervise.

Both of the splash zones include small slides, water cannons, geysers and more.

Children up to 42 and 200lbs are able to use these areas.

Given there is no cost to go here, and many of the slides in the waterpark have height requirements, families with younger children may prefer Splashaway Bay and Captain Jill’s Galleon.

Activities

More Fun Attractions For Families

Perfect Day at CocoCay

For those seeking a day out of the water, there are a few more entertainment options at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Try the 1,600-foot zip line that goes over the Thrill Waterpark and beach, or just hit a ride with the Up, Up and Away Helium Balloon. It can go up to 450 feet on a clear day and provides a 360-view of the island with a protective barrier on the sides. Both attractions require an extra fee.

Top Activities At Cococay

Thrill Waterpark notwithstanding, it should be noted that most of the activities at CocoCay are complimentary. Cruise line passengers who dont want to test their mettle on the wacky slides can still enjoy the island without spending an extra dime. There are, however, a couple of intriguing extra-charge attractions they might want to consider.

If the summit of Daredevils Tower doesn’t get you high enough, you could soar some 450 feet above CocoCay aboard Up, Up, and Away, a tethered helium balloon. The 10-minute experience offers commanding views of the island, the docked cruise ship, and the Bahamian waters. The ride is gentle and should be accessible and enjoyable for nearly everyone, except those who have a crippling fear of heights or vertigo. Fees, which vary seasonally, are approximately $39 for adults and $24 for children 4 to 12.

Guests can also get a birds-eye view of CocoCay by giving its zip line a whirl. The 1,600-foot course traverses the water park and the islands harbor. Prices are about $79.

Other upcharge excursion activities at CocoCay include wave jet tours on Sea-Doo personal boats as either a driver or passenger, parasailing, reef snorkeling, kayaking, a glass-bottom boat tour, and an opportunity to hop into the water with swimming pigs.

What Should You Bring

Since Royal Caribbean operates the island, there is a bit less to have to bring than to a regular cruise port.

The most important things you should bring to the CocoCay are:

  • SeaPass card
  • Cash: The artisan market only takes cash. Tipping cabana attendants also requires cash.
  • Sunscreen
  • Closed-toe shoes: If you are going on the zip line, these will be needed.
  • Beach towels: You can get these from the ship. If you are in a cabana or Coco Beach Club, towels are provided for you.

What Is Perfect Day At Cococay

For years Royal Caribbean operated CocoCay in the Bahamas. The private island exclusively for the cruise lines ships offered plenty to like. It had beaches, a number of activities, snorkeling, and more. Essentially, it was an extension of life on the cruise ship.

Over the years, you might have noticed that cruise ships have become larger and more extravagant. Todays ships have entire neighborhoods, wave simulators, go-kart tracks, countless restaurants, bars, clubs, and more.

In other words, private islands like CocoCay could actually be a downgrade from hanging out on a modern cruise ship. So Royal Caribbean decided to upgrade the island.

Investing $250 million, the area is now known as Perfect Day at CocoCay and offers the most wide-range of amenities of any cruise line island.

Theres a complete waterpark, a 33,000 square foot pool, beaches, restaurants, and even over-the-water bungalows straight out of Fiji. Its all designed to make a world-class destination for Royal Caribbeans passengers.

Whats The Difference Between The Old Cococay And The New Version

Perfect Day At Coco Cay What’s Included

To put it simply, just about everything.

The old version of the island had some amenities and entertainment, but it was primarily a place to hang out by the beach and maybe do some water activities like snorkel or kayak.

Perfect Day at CocoCay now has tons of activities. While the main beach is still there, practically everything else is new within the past several years. Where there was once just jungle brush now sits an entire waterpark. The cruise line also built the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and the tallest waterslide in North America. And did we mention the helium balloon that can take you up 450 feet in the air?

The closest analogy we can think of is Las Vegas when it was a sleepy town in the desert with a few casinos compared to Las Vegas today.

Heres a picture of what the island used to look like before the renovation:

What Do You Do On A Perfect Day At Cococay Bahamas

The biggest attraction of the Perfect Day at CocoCay skyline is the Thrill Waterpark. With its 13 water slides, a wave pool that Royal Caribbean says is the Caribbeans largest, and an Adventure Pool with obstacles to conquer, it will be hard to tear the kids away.

Thrillseekers might try Daredevils Peak, the one listed as the largest water slide in North America at 135 feet. Other slides in the water park are the Dueling Demons, two Manta Raycers, a Screeching Serpent, and the Green Mamba. If the Daredevils Peak doesnt thrill, then the Dueling Demons with their drop entry that launches guests from standing certainly will.

Fuel up at the Snack Shack, a small food area inside the water park. We found plenty of chairs, shaded seats, and free lockers for stashing items we didn’t want to get soaked.

Multi-rider slides and rides were a hit with families.

The Splash Summit is fun for families with six multi-rider slides, which thrill but arent nearly as extreme. The Slingshot is a zero-gravity ride for four guests, while the Twister is a tube-slide for dual riders, letting kids and parents ride together.

Chairs & Umbrellas Cost Nothing Extra

You don’t have to worry about hustling to find a spot at CocoCay.

There are chairs and umbrellas in every region of the island, with plenty to go around. If you visited CocoCay in the past, you may recall shade being at a premium, but Royal Caribbean has added a ton more seating and umbrellas to go with it.

The only seating that truly goes quickly are the seats at the swim-up bar in Oasis Lagoon, but it is easy enough to swim up and place an order without a chair.

Youve also got your choice of even more one-of-a-kind experiences available for a charge such as Thrill Waterpark, featuring the tallest waterslide in North America, Coco Beach Club, featuring the first Floating Cabanas in The Bahamas, and Up, Up & Away helium balloon, offering you views from the highest vantage point in The Bahamas.
