Dining As A Solo Cruiser

If cruising solo isnt challenging enough for some people, dining on a ship as a solo can be terrifying. If youre not comfortable dining alone in a land-based restaurant, your shipboard dining experience should be a little better.

On a ship you have dining options. Retreat into your own world at the Lido buffet or one of the sandwich or pizza bars. But if only for social reasons, the Main Dining Room can be a lifeline if you need one.

If you request a large table in the dining room, be forewarned. Even if youve requested to sit at a large table with solos, theres still the chance of a mix-up. Your waiter could lead you to your table on the first night, only to find that the others at the table are all cozy couples.

Thats happened to me a few times. Right after dinner I went straight to the Maître d and remedied the situation for the next night.

Heres What I Do in the Main Dining Room

On boarding day, I go to the dining room and check out where my assigned table is located. Then at dinner on the first night, as the waiter leads me to my assigned table, I deliberately walk slow.

As I get nearer to my assigned table , if it looks like its all romantic couples or a situation Id rather avoid, I keep walking, stop short or do a U-turn. Then Ill quietly tell the waiter that I want to go back to the Maître d and get a new table assignment. Ive done this many times.

Holland America Line Solo Cabins

The newest ship, debuting in December 2018, Nieuw Statendam solo cabins will be ocean view and artfully inspired. With only twelve single cabins, it will probably be the first to sell out. Holland America has an older demographic sailing so it will be interesting to see how these solo cabins do with older or younger travelers especially on a cruise to Alaska. The average space is larger than most at 127-172 sq. ft. but have a twin bed. I liked that on Holland America each cabin gets a plush robe to use as well as a daily fruit basket .

  • Holland America Koningsdam 12 Ocean view solo cabins
  • Holland America Nieuw Statendam 12 Ocean view solo cabins
  • Holland America Prinsendam 2 Ocean view / 1 interior solo cabins

Holland Americas Oceanview Single Cabins

From its Alaska itineraries to the impressive music scene on its newest vessels, Holland America might be more up your alley. In its lineup of accommodations, HAL includes 127- to 172-square-foot solo cabins on Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam and the new Ryndam.

Each of the single rooms on these ships has an ocean view and a twin bed.

Best Cruise Ships For Solo Travelers

While there are ten Royal Caribbean ships that offer solo rooms of one kind or another, I think a few stand out for offering the best options for a solo traveler.

The Quantum Class of ships, which include Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Anthem of the Seas, offer not only standard studio staterooms, but also studio balcony rooms.

These Super Studio Ocean View balcony rooms offer a private balcony that measures 55 square feet, and is a rare commodity for any solo room.

If you want to try one of Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships, check out Harmony of the Seas for their Studio Interior and Studio Ocean View rooms. Harmony is the only Oasis Class ship to offer studio rooms, so if you want to cruise on the largest ships in the world, this is the one for you.

What Are Studio Cabins For Solo Cruisers Like On Norwegian Cruise Line?

Solo traveling is a solid match with cruise vacations. And, the good news is that the best cruise lines have eliminated the pesky and costly single supplement. This was an extra charge levied against people traveling unaccompanied. Those days are gone and ships have created single cabins with amenities rather than sticking solo travelers in double rooms or dark corners near the engine.

Solo Travel Can Be More Expensive

Beware the dreaded single supplement

Cruise fare pricing is typically based on two people sharing a stateroom which is called double occupancy. Solo cruisers will typically pay 125% 200% above published prices on most cruise lines. This extra charge is called a single supplement.

However, some cruise lines are tailored to single travelers, and offer discounts for the solo traveler. Some of these perks include reduced or waived single supplements. A few have even built staterooms designed and priced for a single occupants.

Many cruise lines are adding new amenities for solo travelers so that everyone has the opportunity to feel included on their vacation!

Cruise Solo Around The World

So hopefully if you were considering traveling solo on a cruise, this is a helpful list. While the cruise lines are slowing adding solo cabins or a bit of attention to this long neglected group, dont expect the onboard to have more than the one or two single meetups which is, in my experience, a free drink with ship crew and a few other solo travelers. Only NCL does the Solo Lounge meetups right for now. If you are keen to meet people onboard, I suggest using Cruise Critic roll call boards and cruise sailing Facebook Groups to meet ahead of time, sign up for group tours and enjoy drinks at sailaway. On board, rather than a set dining table each night, I like to do anytime dining and be seated at the communal table. Every night, you can meet a new group of people to share stories with and if lucky, like me, make new cruise friends that youll sail with in the future.

Let me know if you have sailed in a solo cabin with any of the above cruise lines and how it was. Would you pay the single supplement if the cabin was larger and additional amenities were included? What is your dream sailing itinerary?

The Costa Diadema has single cabins with extra perks available to guests. Im not that familiar with Costa as Ive not sailed them yet but as an Italian ship, I have to think that the food onboard is amazing.

  • Costa Diadema 21 solo cabins
  • Costa Fascinosa 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Favolosa 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Pacifica 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Serena 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Magica -14 solo cabins

This Luxury Cruise Line Adds Solo Cabins To Its Fleet And They Come With Balconies

The single-occupancy cabins will make their debut in 2023.

Going on a cruise as a solo traveler typically means paying a supplemental fee to make up for occupying a cabin meant for at least two people. But in recent years, several major cruise lines have done away with that practice by adding cabins specifically designed for a party of one.

The latest company to join the trend is Oceania Cruises, a luxury line offering sailings around the world.

When Oceania’s newest vessel, Vista, makes its debut in 2023, it will feature six cabins for travelers embarking on the ship themselves, according to a press release. This marks the first time in Oceania’s nearly 20-year history that the company will add this type of cabin to its fleet.

Referred to by the cruise line as “spacious and airy yet cozy,” these single staterooms will measure 270 square feet, and like every other cabin aboard the Vista, they’ll even feature a private balcony. They’ll also offer a Tranquility memory foam bed, a seating area that overlooks the private balcony, and plenty of storage space.

Thanks to its categorization as a Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom, cruisers in these single-occupancy cabins will also have access to Oceania’s Concierge Level amenities. These extra perks and services include free laundry service, room service from the dining room menu, exclusive keycard-only access to the dedicated Concierge Lounge, priority embarkation, a complimentary bottle of Champagne, and more.

The Best River Cruise Lines For Solo Travelers

March 4, 2021 By Britton Frost

Doing my first river cruise alone was one of the most fulfilling travel experiences of my life. There is something about traveling solo that makes me feel fiercely independent and unstoppable. The only downside to traveling solo, however, is the cost. Well sometimes.

Solo passengers often have to pay single supplements, meaning that they usually must dole out what a couple would pay for the same stateroom. Though single supplements can run high, some companies waive these fees. Some river cruise operators also have solo cabins, or, in Rivieras case, a waived solo supplement for a certain amount of travelers on every departure. But more on that in a minute.

How Many Studio Cabins Are On An Average Cruise Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line Studio Cabins for solo travelers

While they are gaining popularity, studio cabins are still very limited. Norwegian Epic and Escape stand out from the crowd with 128 and 82 studios, but most ships will only have between 10 and 30 , with select river vessels only offering one or two per ship. With this in mind, its best for solo travelers to book extremely early.

Cruising Solo In A Double Occupancy World

There is no denying that cruise ships are traditionally configured for guests who are sailing with at least two people in each stateroom.

The cruise model is based on double occupancy, which means the profitability of a ship assumes two people per room.

When cruising solo, you will likely become quickly familiar with the term, “single supplement fee”, which means you are charged extra for cruising with just one person in a stateroom. The single supplement fee makes up for the lost revenue by not having a second person booked in the same room.

While single supplement fees are common, there are a few ways around this fee.

First and foremost, Royal Caribbean offers solo rooms on select cruise ships. Ten Royal Caribbean ships offer a limited amount of studio staterooms that are designed for solo cruisers. These rooms do not come with a single supplement fee associated with the booking.

Another way around the fee is if you have at least 340 or more points in the Crown and Anchor Society . If you are that high up in the system, the single supplement cruise fare is reduced to 150% from 200%.

One other way to get around the single supplement fee is on some rare sailings, the fee may be waived in order to encourage bookings. This is typically offered on last minute cruises, where the cruise line wants to quickly increase bookings.

Get To Know The Crew During Your Solo Cruise

We pride ourselves on having a friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many of our cruise passengers enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe theyre from.

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own local bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who youll often see walking around the ship. If they know youre a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you wont want to miss.

Much like regular staterooms, the size of studio cabins varies widely. With that said, the studios on most lines can make a New York City micro apartment look spacious. Sizes can be as small as 100 square feet for comparison, oceanview and balcony cabins on mainstream cruise lines are typically at least 150 to 200 square feet.
