Coronavirus Latest: Departure For Cruise Ship Docked In New Jersey Delayed Again

Statue of Liberty and Ellis IslandOne of the highlights of taking a cruise from Bayonne is that the cruise ship will usually sail past one of America’s true symbols, the Statue of Liberty. To really bring your vacation up a notch, you can take a ferry from Liberty State Park or Battery Park to Liberty Island for an up-close visit to the statute . Ellis Island, which was once Americas main immigration station from 1892 to 1954, is also located in this area. Over 40 percent of Americans can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island, making it an appealing stop.

Fifth AvenueWhile visiting New York City before or after your cruise, one of the definite shopping highlights is the section of Fifth Avenue between 34th and 59th Street. Lined with upscale shops, this section of Fifth Avenue is one of the world’s premier shopping streets. Among the shopping venues on Fifth Avenue are Gucci, Harry Winston, Saks Fifth Avenue, FAO Schwartz, Louis Vutton, Prada, Fendi and Tiffany & Co. The majestic St. Patricks Cathedral is also in this area of NYC. Further uptown on Fifth avenue are some wonderful museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum.

Cape Liberty is in the middle of nowhere. There are no shops nearby to run into if you want to stock up on bottled water or soda or realize you’ve forgotten to pack toothpaste, socks or your bathing suit. Your first chance to buy anything you’re missing will be the evening of your first night at sea at the ship’s overpriced sundries store. Double-check your packing list and suitcase contents the night before you depart home to be sure you’ve got everything.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Set Sail From Cape Liberty Again The Oasis Of The Seas Has Resumed Weekly Cruises To The Bahamas

Royal Caribbean has resumed cruises out of the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne.

The first ship sailed out of Bayonne on Sept. 5. Cruises out of the port had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, weekly offerings are again available for booking. Seven-night cruises on the Oasis of the Seas are offered out of the port from now until the end of October.

The company announced its schedule for its remaining ships to return to sailing in early August, including the Oasis. All other ships are set to resume sailing by 2022, following Royal Caribbeans relaunch of cruises in Asia, Europe and other parts of the United States.

Prior to setting sail from Cape Liberty, the Oasis had to complete a simulated cruise in late August. After it finished the voyage on Sept. 3, Royal Caribbean announced the Oasis had received the green light from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to set sail regularly again.

Since the start of the Coronavirus emergency in 2020, the cruise ship industry and public agencies have developed procedures to respond to any health emergencies that might arise on ships at sea, Bayonne Mayor James Davis said. Protocols are in place that would kick in for illnesses that might develop on vessels that ship in and out of the Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Where To Stay The Night Before

One of the most common questions about taking a cruise from Cape Liberty is where to stay the night before the cruise begins.

It is always a good idea to fly in at least one day before your cruise to avoid travel delays impacting your ability to get on the cruise ship.

If you are going to fly in the night before the cruise and have no interest in doing any tourist attractions before the cruise, consider staying at a hotel near Newark Airport. Be sure the hotel is near Newark Airport, and not the city of Newark, because the quality of hotel and surroundings is substantially different.

Jersey City is another option to stay the night before the cruise because it is closer to the cruise port than Manhattan , but I’m not especially fond of this area for two reasons: A hotel in Jersey City is not going to be much cheaper than Manhattan hotels, and if you want to be closer to the port, Newark Airport hotels are much closer. Moreover, if you plan to do any sightseeing in New York, staying in New Jersey is a real hassle in terms of transportation.

Many cruisers who want to do sightseeing will spend the night in a Manhattan hotel. There are many hotels in New York City. Be sure to book one in Manhattan, and not one of the other boroughs. Moreover, pick a hotel below 125th street to ensure you are close enough to the landmarks and hot spots tourists like to visit.

Royal Caribbean Vaccine Policy

Royal Caribbean Delays Cruise Ship Departure from New Jersey

One of the main aspects of resuming cruise operations safely is to sail unvaccinated or fully vaccinated sailings and follow the guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Now that cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, are starting to bring ships back to service, different vaccine policies depend on where ships are sailing from.

Heres a simplified list of the policy depending on where cruise ships are departing from:

All crew members are to be fully vaccinated across the fleet and the cruise line and at the end of May, 6,000 of the crew had already received at least one shot.

Distance From The Caribbean

Considering that themajority of the cruises leaving from New Jersey sail to the Caribbean, itsvery far away from your most likely cruise destination. That means that youlleither have to take a very long cruise, which costs a lot more, or youll haveto be satisfied with spending very little time in your destination, and themajority of the cruise spent on the ship, at sea.

Cruise ships are fullof entertainment and dining options, so thats not such a terrible thing. Butwhen you pay for a Caribbean cruise, you might want to spend more than one daythere. Especially if you live in the northeast and youre cruising to theCaribbean to get away from the dreary winter weather.

In contrast, thecruise ports in Florida and along the Gulf Coast are very close to theirCaribbean or Bahamian destinations, and youll get to spend a lot more timeactually enjoying the tropical beaches. Yes, youll have to fly down there toboard the cruise, but it just might be worth it.

Whats the culture & history of the Cape Liberty cruise port?

Conveniently located in Lower New York Harbor, the Cape Liberty Cruise Port was originally created by private developers in 1930 who intended it for industrial use. However, the ideal location and sheer size of the port made it an ideal candidate for use by the U.S. Navy in WWII. The peninsula upon which the port sits off the eastern end of Bayonne Bay is man-made. In 2003, the BLRA and Royal Caribbean International announced their agreement to turn the 430-acre port into a cruise terminal, and in 2013 Royal Caribbean International built a brand new, sleek, and innovative cruise terminal featuring LED lighting and modern design.
