The State Ports Authority said it has worked with the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control and the cruise lines planning to call on Charleston to make sure all Centers for Disease Control requirements and protocols are followed.
Carnival is also stepping up its health and safety measures due to the recent spread of the omicron variant. All passengers who are 2 years old and older must wear a face mask while indoors, except while in their own rooms. The cruise line’s new policy also requires guests to wear face masks “when outdoors if in large gatherings and physical distancing cannot be maintained.” Passengers will also be asked to wear a mask while getting on or off the ship and on any excursions.
Other cruise lines, like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, have also tightened their mask policies.
Carnival also now “strongly suggests” that guests have a booster vaccination before their cruise.
Cruises from Charleston’s port have been idled since mid-March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The SPA has not released its calender of cruises scheduled for the upcoming year, but the maritime agency has voluntarily agreed to a cap of 104 ship visits annually, and no ship larger than 3,500 passenger capacity.

Cases of COVID-19 continue to drop in the state, with a 39% decrease in new infections seen in the last 14 days. While the pandemic continues to account for an average of 55 deaths per day right now, the cautious plan to reinstate cruises from Charleston seems like a measured and positive step.

CHARLESTON, S.C. Carnival Cruises will once again set sail from Charleston in early 2022 after being greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Carnival Cruise Line announced Wednesday they plan to have more ships restarts in January and February, with a goal of having its full fleet moving from U.S. homeports in Spring 2022.
In Charleston, Carnival Sunshine will restart on January 13th.
Our restart plan continues to excel across all metrics, and we are looking forward to completing the restart of the fleet in the new year, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. We appreciate the support and patience of our guests, travel agents and port and destination partners who have been key to this successful restart.
Duffy said the company will carefully monitor the status of public health and adjust its operating protocol as needed.
We are optimistic that vaccines will be approved for children between the ages of 5-11 before the end of the year and we look forward to welcoming more families back on board, she said.
Carnival will operate vaccinated cruises under its current protocols early next year.

Safety First For Charleston Port
According to the South Carolina ports authority, guests can rest assured that they will find the cruise terminal fully prepared to deal with the thousands of guests who will pass through during embarkation days.
Liz Crumley with the South Carolina Ports Authority said in a statement: Following a long-term pause in cruise operations since March 2020 in response to the global pandemic, SC Ports has worked with cruise partners and DHEC to align with all CDC requirements and cruise line protocols as cruise operations resume,
When a ship is in the port, a team of people will disinfect high-touch areas constantly, including handrails, doorknobs, and other surfaces. Face masks will be mandatory inside the terminal and onboard the vessel at all times.

All guests will be required to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before sailing, except if they received a vaccine exemption from Carnival Cruise Line in advance. The cruise line has also implemented extensive health and safety measures such as social distancing, increased sanitation, mask-wearing policies, and more.
Carnival is the only major cruise line to offer cruises departing from Charleston. In the upcoming months, Royal Caribbean does call on the southern city on occasional port calls onboard Enchantment of the Seas.
Park & Go Charleston Cruise Port Parking
Given that Charleston is a relatively small port, there arent as many independent cruise parking lots like you will find around major ports. Still, there is one option Park and Go.
The lot is actually an airport parking lot thats now opened to cruise parking. That means its actually right near the airport, which is about 10 miles away from the cruise port. Still, with a daily rate of $10 per day, youll save half of what youd pay at the cruise port for parking at the ship. On a week long trip, thats $70.
One thing to note is that there is no shuttle to the cruise ship. Youll need to get a ride to the cruise port . While thats an added expense, the lower cost of the parking lot more than makes up for the price of the ride.
Park & Go has about 250 parking spaces. For that reason, its a good idea to make a reservation online ahead of time before your cruise to make sure theres a spot for you.

Carnival Cruise Line is however planning to resume more of its guest operations and ship restarts in some U.S. ports as part of a phased-in approach, the company said in a news release.
We are very pleased with the progress of our restart which will grow to 15 ships sailing from seven U.S. homeports by mid-November, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, in a statement. We are making slight adjustments to our timeline to take into account supply chain realities and ensure that our destination and shore excursion offerings can meet the strong demand we are seeing from our guests. Our teams, ship and shore, are prepared to continue delivering on our great guest experience and manage all health and safety protocols.

Carnival Sunshine Marks Cruising Return To Charleston
Carnival Cruise Line is returning to Charleston after a 22-month hiatus.
As the first cruise ship to sail from South Carolina since the pandemic started, the Carnival Sunshine is resuming service from the homeport today.
Sailing from Charleston, the 2,964-guest vessel is kicking off a program of four- to ten-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
The first voyage includes a visit to Nassau, in the Bahamas, in addition to two days at sea for its four-night journey
The Sunshine is also visiting other destinations in the Bahamas during its year-round, including Bimini, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays.
During the Caribbean itineraries, the vessel is set to call in other ports too, such as Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Maarten and St. Kitts.
The Carnival Sunshine entered service in 1996, as the Carnival Destiny. The largest cruise ship in the world at the time, the vessel holds another distinction it is the first cruise ship to exceed 100,000 tons.

Carnival cruises point out on their website that under their “Have Fun, Be Safe” health protocols, the requirements for passengers are continuously evolving. What restrictions may be in place in January 2022 depends on progress with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout as much as the continuing reduction in cases – the state is currently lagging behind at 48% vaccinated compared to a national level of 56%.
Right now, the cruise line favors passengers who are vaccinated and can provide evidence of a negative COVID test before departure.
