What Was The Controversy About Jack Whitehalls Casting
Following the announcement of Jack Whitehalls casting, there was a social media backlash, with arguments that a heterosexual actor shouldnt have been cast as one of Disneys first openly gay characters.
Really #JungleCruise ? Your first significant gay role will be played by a straight white man perpetuating stereotypes? Fail! This ship should sink.
Omar Sharif Jr.
If Scarlett Johansson wasnt allowed to play a trans man then Jack Whitehall shouldnt be allowed to play a gay man. Especially so when you consider there are absolute hundreds of out gay men in Hollywood who are better actors than him, journalist Sophie Wilkinson posted on Twitter.
However, others argued that there are plenty of gay actors who play straight roles, and that the whole point of acting is that its transformative.
Shock as actor is asked to play someone different from themselves. Isnt that kind of the point? Wouldnt always casting gay actors in gay roles be condemned for typecasting?
Wes Streeting MP
For his part, Whitehall has said that he didnt know the character was gay when he first auditioned, but he said he was proud of the coming out scene.

The following article, Disney Injects Gay Agenda in Jungle Cruise Flick with Proud Coming-Out Scene, was first published on Flag And Cross.
One of the stars of Disneys upcoming adaptation has pronounced himself proud of his characters coming-out as gay scene in the flick.
British actor and comedian Jack Whitehall, who is not gay, told reporters that he did not know the character was going to be portrayed as a gay man when he auditioned for the film.
When I first read the script, there was only a like a couple of sides. So yeah, there wasnt any indication of that. It was quite a long casting process, Whitehall told Yahoo Entertainment.
According to reports, Whitehalls McGregor does not directly use the word gay in his coming-out scene, but his dialog makes it clear. He tells Dwayne Johnsons character that he broke off engagements with three women because his interests happily lay elsewhere. He goes on to note that his sister stood by him when other family members shunned him because of who he loved.
Whitehall added that there was deep discussion over how to do the scene. I think it was a really well-written scene, and one that we certainly thought about and talked about, he said.
I hope that its a scene that audiences enjoy I certainly felt at the time that I was proud of the work that wed done, Whitehall concluded.

Macgregor Houghton Comes Out As Gay In Jungle Cruise
Near the midway point of the film, MacGregor and Frank relax together in one of the rare moments that Lily is not with them. He explains that she was the only person who stood by him when their family threatened to disinherit him for turning down a third marriage proposal. MacGregor reveals;that he;will never marry because his “interests lie elsewhere,” a tacit admission of his sexuality and that his interest is not with women. Frank nods at him and they toast to elsewhere.;‘s heartfelt coming out scene adds a welcome layer of complexity to MacGregors character as well as illustrating Lilys devotion to those she loves.
