Best Time Of Year To Go
With that said, you should consider factors like crowds, price, and weather to determine the best time of year to go on an Alaskan cruise. I also think about the average temperatures, hours of daylight you will have, and wildlife sightings. Therefore, I believe the best time of year to go on an Alaskan Cruise is the month of July. Also, the type of excursions you book will also factor into what to pack as well. So keep that in mind.
Small Rooms Balcony And Decorations
Small rooms We had a room on the Upper Promenade with a king-sized bed. We also had a balcony, which we used quite a bit. We brought small magnetic hooks to hang our bathing suits from the ceiling since it was metal and we didnt have to hang them in the bathroom. Keep in mind that we did see people who had small items that decorated their cabin door for anniversaries or birthdays, so if that is you bring it.

I started to pack for my very first ride on an Alaska cruise ship with Holland Americas Nieuw Amsterdamfor the upcoming summer months. It was most definitely on my bucket list. I was trying to decide what to take with me, since I knew there was a big difference from going to than going on a traditional Caribbean cruise.

Wait Until Port To Pick Up Anything You Forgot
Its inevitable that youll think of something that you forgot to pack while on the ship. Its just the way things are. If this happens to you, wed suggest waiting until you get into port to pick up whatever you needs. Cruise ships sell staples everything from candy bars to cough medicine but there is an insane markup on the prices. Youll save money and have a wider selection if you wait until the ship ports. There will be a small store or two where you can pick up sundries.

Invest In A Camera With A Zoom
These days almost all of us use our phone as our camera. While phone cameras are great for most shots, they often lack in the zoom capability. If you want to spot wildlife in Alaska and catch a snapshot, then youll want a decent camera with a zoom feature. This will allow you to get stunning pictures of the beauty of Alaska, even if you are quite a distance from your subject.

You can make your head spin by searching site after site for the best cruise deal. And while many promise low fares, weve found that the prices are almost always the exact same whether you go to the cruise lines website. What might change is the incentives to book. So one site might charge $1,000 for a cruise, but have $50 in onboard credit. Another might have the same trip for $1,000 as well, but with $100 in onboard credit. All told however, the differences are usually small.
Formal Nights On The Ship
You may be surprised; but many Alaska Cruise lines still have formal nights, so I would suggest for a nighttime outfit some formal wear. Men bring a sport coat with a formal shirt and dressy pants. Women typically bring nice dresses and gorgeous comfortable shoes. On nights that you are not formal, men wear a business casual outfit, like nice pants or shorts, dressy jeans, and a collard shirt. Women wear dress pants or shorts or a nice dress.
I would say that Alaskan cruises are a bit more casual overall, but they do have evening chic clothing or formal attire at night for people to dress up. As for me and my husband, we brought at least 6 pairs of heels and fancy shoes, nice jewelry, a bit more formal outfits, as we like to dress up when we dine in fancy places. I even brought a few lightweight pashmina shawls for my shoulders, as it can be a bit cool at night on the ship.

Do The Math Before Buying A Drink Packages
Drink packages make things extremely simple. You pay one price and get to drink pretty much anything on the ship for no additional charge. That said, they arent always the best deal, depending on how much youll drink. For instance, you have to purchase the drink package for every day of the cruise, even when you are in port and unlikely to use it that much. Sailing From Vancouver Fly Into Seattle & Take The Train
While Seattle is the big departure port for Alaskan cruises, a fair number also sail from Vancouver, Canada. The issue here is that for many in the United States, a plane ticket to Vancouver can be hundreds more than the same ticket to Seattle. This is despite the fact that the two cities are just a couple of hundred miles apart. If you find this situation, its much cheaper to book the flight to Alaska and then take one of the many services between the two cities. For example, the four-hour train ride from Seattle to Vancouver only costs about $40.

Payouts In The Casino Arent That Great
During your trip there will be plenty of time to try your luck in the ships casino. Now it doesnt take a genius to know that any time you gamble the edge always goes to the house. On a cruise ship that edge is even larger. Payouts are notoriously low on the ships, including blackjack that pays 6-to-5, and video poker with low returns. If you still want to gamble theres nothing wrong with that, but just know that the chips are stacked against you.

Youre going to be bound by airline restrictions if you fly into the port, but if not, dont be afraid to overpack for your trip. Alaska can throw a lot of different weather at you in a short period of time, meaning different clothing is needed. Add in things like elegant night and youve got something else to pack for. Meanwhile, its not so easy to run out and get anything you might have forgot at home. Cruise lines dont charge for baggage so bring pretty much as much as you want.
Getting To Alaska For Your Dream Alaska Cruise
There are many kinds of Alaskan cruises. Many sized cruise ships set sail from all over the Pacific Northwest with a variety of itineraries.
Likely, you will fly into either Seattle, Washington, or Vancouver, British Columbia. These are the most popular origination destinations. Departing from Seattle will not require a passport.
